Kakushigoto Movie

First off, this is a summary movie. Watch the original series if you haven't already. There is some new content in the movie that wasn't in the original series. If you enjoyed the original series, you might get a bit bored since it is a recap. However, even though I watched the original series myself, I still found myself really enjoying the movie. It really reminded me of how much fun I had watching it at the time of airing.

Since the story and characters are the same for the most part, I don't think I really need to go that deeply into it. While the ... jokes can be seen as a bit awkward at times, I found myself jumping back into the story with this movie without really feeling like I ever left it in the first place.

The use of the soundtrack was great and made things feel really cohesive. The casting was great, and their performances were spectacular. It was a very enjoyable movie, and I really didn't mind that I watched a recap of a series I already watched.

While I do think that most summary anime movies would benefit by just giving us a short epilogue while skipping the filler, I didn't mind with this one because they presented it in a way that made a lot of sense. Flashing back through the memories also impacted the story more effectively than if they just left it as a mini epilogue. It was actually a really smart decision on their part.

With that being said, since it was technically still a recap, I wouldn't feel right giving it a score that was higher than what I gave the original series, so I decided to give it an 8/10 and see how I feel about it later.

Despite being cliche, this series was a lot of fun because it focused on a relationship that is scarcely touched in anime. Being able to see the intimate family relationship was an experience in itself that was incredibly heartwarming.

I'm sure many of you remember Kakushigoto from 2020. It was an underrated SOL anime with 12 episodes focusing on the funny and wholesome interactions between a father, a gag mangaka who draws dirty jokes and his daughter, who doesn't know what her dad does for work. This movie is just a compilation/summary/recap of that anime series so if you haven't watched that yet I highly recommend watching it first before watching this movie. As such I'll mostly be discussing about the compilation film itself instead of say, reviewing its story and characters.

The movie is almost 1 hour and 19 minutes long so it's ... shorter than what I had expected. But recap movies like these are usually short so it's probably better that way. Almost 95% of it is recap though so that might be disappointing to some people. If you don't remember the plot of the main series then it's better to just watch the whole thing. It doesn't include everything from the original anime/manga so some of your favorite moments from the anime series might be missing here. But I think this anime does a good job with its pacing by including most of the important plotpoints (the last half of the movie is mostly the last episodes intact). Good pacing isn't something you normally expect from summary movies so I thought that was great.

If I'm not wrong, the last episode of the anime came out before its source manga ended with its last chapter. So some vital info in the manga got cut in the original anime. Despite this the original mangaka Kumeta Kouji loved the anime adaptation of his work and even recommended it over reading his manga. I haven't personally read the manga yet, but I can confirm there's new content in this movie albeit very little. The overall ending of the anime series is still the same. Despite this I think this movie is still worth watching. But if you're stingy with your schedule then you may start watching from around 1:03:30 timestamp as that's where most of the new content starts. There's some new but short scenes with Hime Gotou (cv: Rie Takahashi) at the beginning of the movie though and some new narration by her I think but they're negligible.

This compilation film is in no way a replacement for the original anime. Rather it's supplementary to it.

Just watched the recently released Kakushigoto compilation movie. It somehow compressed the TV series into a roughly 80 mins long film. It showed almost all of the beginning and ending part, and skipped a lot of the middle part if I'm not wrong. The extra scenes were added to give vital information about Hime's mom and to stretch the ending a little bit. One of the main problems of the TV series was the rushed ending, but this movie tried to fix that. I would've liked the duration to be longer and more scenes from the TV series to be added, but I still liked ... it a lot and got emotional just like as when watching the TV version.

Recommended for those who liked the TV series. And no, it cannot be used as a substitute to that.

As a compialtion movie, I thought this would be a great way to relive the anime once again. Glad to say that this is probably one of the best compilation movies I have ever seen.

The anime is a sum up of some of the best stories in the anime. It focused more on the relationship between Hime and Goto as the main point of the movie and was able to show their everyday life in a very good way. We see the extremes Goto goes to ( No pun intended) and how he has been trying to hide his job from Hime as well ... as showing some very wholesome moments depecting Hime's pure personality. It felt a bit too fast at times but was still enjoyable.

The Movie also added a few extra scenes at the end which did tie up some parts in the story that would have made the original TV series much better. The backstory of Goto was explained well and we finally get to see why Hime's mother was on that boat.

The ending of the movie is cute specially with the roles reversed where Hime is now the one with a secret to hide :D

Overall, I would give it a 9/10. A very enjoyable movie and I loved watching it although I would have loved to see the end of the whole searching for the mother part.
Would recommend the movie and the OG series.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Still definitely up there in most heartwarming animes, and only 12 episodes (well, the show). The movie doesn't add much, while there are a couple new scenes esp. with a lil bit more context on the mother, I'd say that it's not necessary to watch this.

But if you liked the show, and you'd be crazy not to, then this is the furthest thing from a waste of time.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Hime and Goto again. I missed all the characters and the humour. I cried, I'll admit it. Because as sweet as everything is, I don't think I'll ever get over how ... good of a parent Goto is to Hime and how he managed to be a great dad even after the loss of his wife. Nor do I think I'll ever get over the fact he spent his savings on continuing the search for her, even after they called it off.

Everything is tied up in a bow, still. But their relationship was perfectly captured in this and you can clearly see how much both Hime's parents love her. I don't think a 12 episode anime has ever been able to perfectly develop a relationship like this before.

In summary, I still can't get enough of them. Even though I would've loved more new scenes and content, the movie was still enjoyable and I wish I could go back to when I first started Kakushigoto. It's definitely an anime I'll recommend to people who love SoL, meaningful relationships and this kind of humour.

Will always be a comfort anime of mine.

The story really made me sad, happy, all emotions in one. The uniqueness of the story itself lies in how the storyline was rewritten in the previous series, and allows the audience to understand the entire plot. The secrets in this film can be found out from where the house is located, why Hime's mother's past is not known, etc. but the most interesting of all, is how much love and affection a father has. I really liked this anime from the start because in terms of the way the characters are portrayed, they are cute and have a light impression and the story is ... enjoyable to watch for approximately 80 minutes. This will be one of the best films I have ever watched in 2023. Among all the anime films I have watched, this film in my opinion will be the best of the best.
