At the time of writing, I’ve seen four episodes (all that are out so far). No plot details.
Art/animation: 10/10
First things first, the animation is GORGEOUS. Why can’t all computer animations look this good? Budget and time, I know, but this show is absolutely beautiful and I feel like that should always be worth the cost in both money and production time. The movements are smooth for the massive majority of scenes so far, the places around the characters are detailed and so atmospheric and just amazing to look at, and the characters look good. Even the shots themselves, what’s in frame and how, look
...
amazing, and I’m not generally one to note these kinds of things.
If I have to nitpick, the movements are a little janky sometimes (when compared to big budget CGI movies like Disney stuff where all the animations are very smooth) but only sometimes. It’s nothing like the common CGI anime where it’s all just so… barely tolerable.
Story so far: 7/10
The story moves in a very good pace, no part has felt boring or redundant, and I’ve enjoyed the scenes of action and danger we’ve gotten. I’m constantly interested in seeing what’ll happen next as the plot keeps moving forward without stalling and always giving you a new, interesting (usually dangerous) moment to get invested in. The fourth episode especially kept me yearning for more, and I was disappointed to see the episode end.
That being said, the rating dips here because I’m a bit confused. Thoroughly enjoying the episodes, yes, but a little confused nonetheless. I have a million questions and roughly three answers. However, the confusion is nothing out of the ordinary; I’ve seen a few chinese shows, and they tend to be a bit confusing to me until I’ve seen at least one thirds of it. I’ve accepted this and I have the patience to wait for it to make more sense.
Despite the mild confusion, I’m having a blast watching this. I binged the four episodes just now without skipping a single second forward, which is very rare for me. I understand enough to be interested in seeing where the plot goes, and the questions I do have don’t annoy me.
Characters so far: 8/10
It’s rare for me to care too deeply about characters, so this is a good score from me. They’re a bit superficial still, but I hope that as the show continues, we get to learn more about them. It at least seems to be heading in that direction. I suck at names too, so have nicknames:
Pirate Guy Li and Pirate Woman, aka the protagonists, are very cool characters. I like them both. They’re capable and skilled, and I always enjoy a character who can fight. They’re my favorites up until now and will probably stay that way. Also they both look great. Bonus points for that lol
The Funny Pirates, aka sidekicks that offer some humor… Not much to say about them. They’re amusing at times without breaking the mood, which I appreciate.
Guy With Classes, I have a feeling I’ll either love him or hate him with no inbetween. Time will tell.
Sickly White Boss Guy… He’s just creepy. I don’t like him.
The Captain Dude feels like he’ll be a protagonist or at least a deuteragonist. No feelings of him yet.
Setting: 10/10
It’s a space opera. I’m generally more into fantasy but this show is igniting something inside me, so I wanted to give this its own rating too. So far it’s been a pretty basic spaceship setting and I doubt it’ll become much more than that, but it is just so cool to me for some reason, cooler than the space shows and movies I’ve seen before.
