Far away from the reaches of demons and war, near the borderland of Zoltan, D-Rank adventurer Red lives a normal existence. Through perseverance and hard work, his dream of starting his own apothecary and peaceful life in the countryside finally came true. Abruptly, Red gets a live-in partner and assistant named Rit—the princess of Duchy Loggervia and an adventurer herself—who gives everything up to join him.

Although honest, kind, and loved by all, Red has a secret shared only with Rit: his real name is Gideon, brother of Ruti Ragnason, the "Hero" and a former member of her party. Ares Drowa, the "Sage," kicked Red out of their party after their war against the Demon Lord after deciding he was weak and insignificant. Now, even though Red has left the Hero's party behind by assuming a new life together with Rit, his past has yet to let go of him.

The Anime-verse is filled with Anime staring some Wimpy Guy with a Hidden Talent who was banished from his party because (insert silly reason here) and nobody except for the Hot Chick with a Sword recognized is talent at being able to (insert random magical talent here). His old party falls apart while he goes it alone and the Hot Chick with the Sword joins Wimpy Guy with a Hidden Talent and they go out and Save The World! He ends up with a fortune in gold and a harem made of a hot chick from every magical species in that universe.

It's hard to ... avoid those anime. is there a Japanese word to group these anime under? If not I suggest Tsuihō (Exile), because there's certainly enough of them to form their own unique group. Are you exhausted of seeing one Tsuihō anime after another and the only thing that sets them apart from each other is the name of the fantasy world they save and the measurements of the Hot Chick with the Sword?

Yeah me too.

I don't know why I chose this Tsuihō anime, maybe because the artwork showed a truly hot Hot Chick with a Sword in the advertisements I saw. I sat down to watch, expecting to be lulled into boredom by the same old thing but wait - the Wimpy Guy with a Hidden Talent didn't run out to save the world, he had a desire to open a business in a small town and relax, and the Hot Chick with a Sword revealed that it sounded good to her too, and off they went into one of the sweetest, nicest romance anime I've seen in a very long time.

In other anime, there's no real romance, the Hot Chick with a Sword has a crush on Wimpy Guy with a Hidden Talent and for some damn reason he spends the anime shaking in fear and pushing her away. Here, they fall in love. They work together to make their business a success, they meet with the towns people and solve local problems and befriend the town.

It's a nice story that feels right. It's the first romance I've seen in a long time that includes love, and in the end you'll be cheering on their love for each other much more than the swordplay. I quickly became addicted to this story. I am nervous about the upcoming second season because Anime has a way of ruining the storyline with an ill conceived second season. Here's hoping that Red and Rit continue on to a happy life together in Season 2!

Mixed Feelings

Shin no Nakama is ground zero for the new subgenre of isekai shows in which a member of the Hero™’s party gets kicked out for one reason or other and has to start a new life on their own. Shield Hero is arguably the principal precursor of the genre proper, but Shin no Nakama is the first official title on the list.

Nowadays I am often left to wonder why I decided to watch any given show, because from the moment I write down a title on my to-watch list, until the moment I actually get around to watching it, years pass – routinely. As such, ... I often forget what was behind the original impulse. Fortunately, I have a good idea how Shin no Nakama found its way on my list. The show was pretty popular in 2021, when it was airing, and plenty of people seemed to be very taken with Ruti, the Hero™ character, spamming my FB timeline with all manner of screenshots and memes of her. I vaguely remember thinking her design was cool, and so I decided to one day give it a shot.

Watching this felt like rewatching Chillin’ in my 30s. If anything, Shin no Nakama felt like the beta version of Chillin’ – much of the same, just less polish and skill. As such, I really don’t have much to say I haven’t already, so I encourage you to read that essay for a more detailed analysis, for effectively everything I’ve said about that one applies here.

The only real difference is that Shin no Nakama feels a lot more amateurish, as though the team behind it weren’t quite ready to put out a show for TV broadcast. A lot of the facial expressions looked rather janky and did not fit the voice acting, especially in the series’ more dramatic moments. Still, it’s a generally nice-enough looking show.

Chillin’ also felt a lot more down-to-earth and believably wholesome. Not than Shin no Nakama isn’t also mighty wholesome – it is. It just feels less competently put together. A lot of the verisimilitude or lack thereof comes from the design of the protagonist. Dariel literally looked like a regular dude in his 30s. Gideon, or Red, as he calls himself since his exile, by comparison sports a much more LightNovelGuy™-type look to him, sharper textures, sleek eyes, spiky hair, the works.

Shin no Nakama also attempts to create a bit more dramatic tension by way of a plot device that is supposed to pose a philosophical question to the audience. What is more important? To do what you choose of your own free will? Or to do that which you are destined for? I didn’t personally find that whole shpiel terribly interesting, but your mileage will vary.

Lastly, while the romance was a welcome and important element of Chillin’, it was not the main element. Here, the OTP is put front and center much earlier and takes up a lot more oxygen. In some ways, this show doesn’t go as far with its romance. Yet again, in other ways – awesome ways – it goes so much further.

What can I say? The Japanese government really wants weebs to leave their basements and have sex. Nippon needs babies!

So, Banished from the Hero’s Party had a great setup ,,dude gets kicked out of the hero’s party and decides, “You know what? I’m done saving the world; I’ll sell herbs and chill.” Honestly, that sounded like the start of something refreshing. Unfortunately, it ended up being one of those shows that doesn’t really know what it wants to be.

It’s not a fantasy . the worldbuilding is paper-thin. It’s not really romance either Red and Rit get together early, and then… nothing special happens. It tries slice-of-life, but then it remembers there’s a demon lord plot waiting somewhere in the corner. Basically, it ... juggles three genres and drops all of them.

The tone’s all over the place: one minute it’s cute domestic fluff, the next it’s dark hero angst, and neither side hits hard enough to matter. The “Blessing” system could’ve been cool if anyone cared to explain it properly, but nah we just vibe.

Visually, it’s fine. Not ugly, not amazing .just “yep, that’s an anime.” The music’s there too, doing its best.

In the end, Banished from the Hero’s Party feels like watching a chill show that accidentally wandered into a fantasy battle halfway through and decided to stay out of politeness. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely disappointing if you expected anything deeper than comfy herb-shop moments.

High hopes, low impact. Feels like fantasy, romance, and slice-of-life all applied for the same job and got rejected together.
