Project Scard: Praeter no Kizu

Not sure what to really say on Praeter no Kizu. It's a show that's weird to look at, a bit lackluster in other departments, but also just a level of uninteresting things going on in general. Let me explain.

Art and sound
To start with, the art isn't piss ugly. The backgrounds and the world can look stunning in parts, can look amazing in many parts. It's great in that way, but then in terms of the characters it can look rather weird. It's one of those you'll love it, or you'll hate it. For me, I have mixed feelings about it. i've seen worse, but it's ... certainly something.

The sound is at least good though, fitting for purpose, can't say anything wrong about the sound at all. Nothing wrong.

Story and characters.
I feel like what makes this show work, is that there are some decent characters within here, from both sides, good and bad. Which makes the show better than it seems. Following a group known as Helios, those whom protect the city, mainly following one certain hero that protects the town in Eiji, as he passes on his legacy and tattoo to another in Kai, as he tries to get used to all of it, and the power that these tattoos have. As these tattoos have sealed beasts inside, and each are different in their own way. You have those within Helios on one side, and those called Artemis, who are there to maintain security. As Kai is thrown into all of this, while wanting to follow Eiji's leaving words in protecting the town/city. Though it's not all plain sailing. Eiji's younger brother of course wouldn't accept this, and is rightly pissed off and asking questions, but it makes it at least entertaining in some way, but keeping tension within the group, along with seeing how Kai does with his new given power, and the new friendships he makes along the way, along with what else these sealed beasts hold.

As for their personalities, like I said they're fairly decent in terms of what they are. Kai is good spirited, and seems to really want to save people. There is a corrupt seeming law character in Kouga, who you just feel has a more sinister motive about him that you just want to get a good smack honestly. So there is promise there.

I'd honestly say I have mixed feelings on this show, it's been a bit hard to explain really, if I like it, or not. So watch it yourself, and see what you think of it. It can be touching, but it can look like a right mess.

I don't really use MAL. but here we go.
There's nothing interesting about this anime. The only thing that caught my attention positively was the 3D backgrounds and the first episode (which was really cool, I admit) but after that it just went downhill.

The characters are boring, the story isn't addicting. I felt nothing while watching it. Also, I don't even remember seeing any character development, they were very empty.
It reminded me of those otome games that make an anime just for marketing purposes (for example Brothers Conflict or Hakuouki).

I do not recommend this.

Somehow i really can't finish this anime. The thing that is throwing me off is that they all look the same age. The voices don't match the characters for me and i cannot focus on the story because there is too much "unique artstyle" going on mixed with 3D backgrounds.

The one thing i wanna say positively is the lighting and use of colors is something i really really liked. If they wouldve stuck to drawn background and bigger use of lining maybe that would make the setting be really good.

Apart from them all looking 16-ish, this felt too much of a mash-up new school ... ova where you grab a bunch of brainstormed artwork and create a story out of it. I don't like the random choice of music... It doesn't fit the tone, it also seems just there for the sake of artsy.

To clarify, anime to me has to be a good story telling and good described scenes/characters even if they have no strong character background. Episode one is already giving me so much information including the weird artstyle that i can't keep up. I dropped it at the 4th episode. The superpowers they have, to put it blunt, look like PNG's placed onto drawn artwork while their enviroment is 3D.

I'm sorry but if you are not into new school art projects, this is not for you.

It isn't bad for a casual watch but it isn't the best work by the studio, either. They aren't doing anything new with the setting, power system, or characters. The combination of 3D backgrounds and 2D characters did utilize dynamic camera angles, but the pacing and moment in the fights didn't impress me as much as the ones in K did.

I like the idea of tattoos giving the characters powers but the power system here could have used some work. We're given what they are called and roughly what their powers are, but not their strengths and weaknesses (for the most part) so the ... battles don't have much tension.

The aesthetics of the anime are good, cool character design, animation and soundtracks. The anime had some philosophical stuff too which I quite like ("Justice without strength is powerless, strength without justice is violence"), plus a nice plot twist towards the end, so my overall rating for this anime is still a mildly positive 6.

What disappointed me is really the flat characters; not so much development whatsoever and your typical "I want to save my friend" motive which got quite repetitive and superficial at the end. The characters do not really make any lasting impact, but I thought the backstory behind a "hero" was ... relatively refreshing. Won't really recommend for people who prioritizes plot and character development in an anime, but it's a decent anime to watch to pass time or if you're merely looking at aesthetics.
