Synopsis

Every day, Naoto Hachiouji is teased relentlessly by Hayase Nagatoro, a first year student he meets one day in the library while working on his manga. After reading his story and seeing his awkward demeanor, she decides from that moment on to toy with him, even calling him "Senpai" in lieu of using his real name.

At first, Nagatoro's relentless antics are more bothersome than anything and leave him feeling embarrassed, as he is forced to cater to her whims. However, as they spend more time together, a strange sort of friendship develops between them, and Naoto finds that life with Nagatoro can even be fun. But one thing's for sure: his days will never be dull again.

Don't Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro is an easy to watch romantic comedy with some cute characters. By the end of the first season, a healthy relationship has developed between the main characters and healthy friendships develop with ancillary friends. It's a wholesome series with some cool cast members.

It's easy to write off the whole season when watching the first few episodes because of Nagatoro's initial bullying of Naoto, which was drawn out a little long in animated form compared to the manga. Reviewed as whole. I truly misjudged what this show was about. And that’s because the first season, and especially the first episode are complete trash. This has one of the worst pilots I’ve ever seen. But you start to pick up what the show has to offer halfway through season 1. Started this because a friend of mine that started Eva because of me said I should watch it (not because he thought it's good but because he thought it would be funny if I'd see it) so I felt that I kind of owe him one and decided to binge the entire season in a day (I'm sick so no school which means it was a perfect time to do it). This is definitely not my type of show at all but I was surprised to find ... out that it wasn't actually all that horrible in the end. It's a bit weird saying that when this is actually the lowest rating I've ever given to a season of tv, but it isn't *that* much worse than Demon Slayer's second season, and I bet that if you looked at this without having watched it you would've thought it's some shitty hentai, so yeah, the rating is still surprisingly positive in my book.

Will not do a long review on this as it obviously isn't the sort of show that should get one (who would read a Nagatoro yap anyway ☠️), plus I'm rushing to finish another review on letterboxd, but basically: the comedy was absurdist yet still grounded at the beginning, which made it genuinely funny to me, but it unfortunately developed into absurdism for its own sake without any thought put into the set pieces making it kind of irritating. Some episodes don't add anything to the show at all and can rightfully be called filler even with the show's vignette-like structure, it tries way too hard at making cringe-inducingly awkward scenes between the main characters (who are fairly annoying stereotypes and tropes), has infuriating side characters and a ton of cliches, yet still manages to be sweet enough and satisfactory in the end that I can't really hold a grudge towards it or anything like that. My biggest complaint would be that it's overlong (because it drags like crazy, the pacing is not the creators' forte), because otherwise it's exactly what this type of show is supposed to be like (even has some insane animation imo), I'm just not part of the demographic for it. Plus it's honestly inexplicable to me how this show managed to have more logical and less annoying comedy than Demon Slayer and even Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because it realized the fact that if you make every joke revolving a character be that character screaming random shit in the most anime way possible, you're supposed to at least diversify how they do it depending on the character's personality, instead of having everybody scream in the exact same way. I was genuinely more annoyed at the comedy in those aforementioned shows than I was in this one, despite this being clearly much worse and much dumber overall. Context also helped, this type of comedy fitted this show's style much more than it does the others', in my opinion at least.

Anyway will go and hopefully finish one of the two procrastinated reviews I have for letterboxd. This was such a fucking exhausting day I'm never finishing a full season of an anime in a single again (except for tomorrow when I'll finish the second season of this show 🤭) jesus. Yeah, pretty damn bad (really bad most of the time) but at least it wasn't horrible like I expected it to be, so that's for sure a W. From what I heard from my friend (who hasn't finished the second season yet mind you) the second season isn't as cringe-worthy as this one so I still have my hopes up and my fingers crossed. Also completely unrelated but my mom has just finished the fourth season of Gilmore Girls and I'm not even gonna lie I'mma definitely watch that show as well at some point cause from what I've seen it's genuinely not as bad as I mistakenly thought it was. Anyhow that's the review bad season what did you except?
