Liang Bu Yi

Within the Chinese imperial court, stern-faced Emperor Xiao Jinyun and spirited Empress Xu Yu are at constant odds with one another. But the universe has an interesting way to solve their issues: an accident causes the two to switch bodies, forcing them to put themselves in the other's shoes—literally. Now responsible for unfamiliar duties and court dynamics, the emperor and empress must navigate the maintenance of their identities, unruly concubines, and the nation itself. In doing so, Xiao Jinyun and Xu Yu's personal qualities and unconventional skills find new purpose, and a sense of understanding and compassion grows between the two.

However, great threats loom within and outside the court. If the imperial astrologer cannot discover the key to switching them back in time, then internal strife and suspicion may lead to the duo's untimely demise.

No Doubt In Us is one of my favorite donghuas. It’s not exactly deep, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, or anything of the sort. It’s more just a fun watch- but it is solidly fun, with great humor and likeable characters.

I appreciate a strong and sensible female lead, and the empress is pretty great (Huna is pretty great too!). She’s not the brightest, but her heart is in the right place. Somewhat unusually, she is the brawn and he is the brain, a dynamic I really like.

The relationship between the emperor and empress builds nicely and is quite sweet. It’s not ... out of nowhere since they have to work together closely after the gender swap. Neither of them is perfect; they both have plenty of believable flaws as well as strengths. This makes their character progression and growing relationship really satisfying to watch. Love-to-hate is generally overused, but this one is done well, because their starting resentment and growing affection are both founded on real, consistent personality traits.

Not only were the main characters likeable, but there were also many memorable side characters with lovable personalities. They get enough screentime for us to appreciate their quirks and get attached. The antagonists, on the other hand, were easy to dislike. So overall, no ambiguous emotions to muddle my enjoyment.

The story is not unique, especially for those familiar with Chinese Imperial settings. The gender swap adds interest and fun, though in the end a lot of the story arcs involve just classic palace drama and power struggles. But it is all done well, with good relationship-building and decent humor sprinkled throughout. Plus, palace drama is not necessarily bad, and I found these interesting enough.

I like the art, as well as the style of breaking into chibi regularly. The chibi was very cute, and maintains the light atmosphere.

My main quibble has to be the episode length. It felt like each one went by in a flash, and then the show was over way too quickly. I guess there is only so much material. I also read the manhua, and found that the donghua didn’t leave much out, although it changed a few things. I think it was an overall improvement relative to the manhua.

This is easily on my list of favorite animes to watch. After watching other romance animes there were only a few that really caught my eye in accordance to my all time forever favorites! This is one of those shows. As I first loaded it up, I was sooo disappointed with the animation, as it felt bad, but later I realized how cool it was and just loved the art & animation style as well, it gave it its own path.

Not only did it have the romance we want to see, with a great conclusion, it also balanced itself out by guiding us ... through an adventure, some drama, friendships, supernatural events, and all the cool stuff. The story is extremely strong and rich.

When it comes to character development this show exceeds expectations, as we get to meet, feel, and develop with most of the cast, including the side ones that just appear in the emperors court rulings.

The romance started and developed fluidly. The show concluded at a wonderful pace, I really liked the fact that there was a visual conclusion and they gave us "that" ending! As I was watching the show, I was like "I better see it happen, I hope they include it!" and they did, which is nice and satisfying.

Its also nice that they had 2 seasons, and even though the episodes are shorter than usual, a lot happens, and surprisingly it doesn't feel skimmed through. You get all the details, events, and notes needed in one episode. They don't feel short at all.

Very engaging, stirs up all kinds of emotion and allows us to see justice happen. I'm new to Chinese anime, and honestly I love the way they know how to create good drama. However, I have realized that sometimes they drag it way too far, but here its balanced, the drama adds to the show rather than take away from it.

This and Tong Ling Fei - 10/10

I really enjoyed No Doubt In Us! From Xu Yu and Xiao Jinyun's reviving romance, to the court conspiracy slowly unfolding around them, to the fantastical magic element- almost every aspect of the plot lands well, with lively and entertaining characters to carry it. Xu Yu and Jinming are my favourites of the cast; the energy and positivity around both of them really lightens things up, and they're both very endearing to me. Everyone is very colourful and three-dimensional, and while it's slow to show you the depths behind each character, you come out with at least some positive feeling for even the antagonists (or ... at least most of them. Not naming any names 🤭)


While the animation style is a bit strange to adjust to at first, it's used to its full potential! The comedic moments get funny little chibis, while most of the show uses a style more similar to early RWBY. It's obvious that it was made on a budget, but they do a great job with what they have regardless. The character designs are memorable, the backgrounds are stunning, and they don't shy away from making their characters expressive.


Overall, I think it's really great! More people should give it a go. It's funny, fast-paced, and keeps you engaged. And, as a bonus, it sticks to the manhua plot really well- if you like the donghua, you'll like the manhua too!
