The MCs have an interest in their respective professions, and work hard to earn it despite obstacles or criticisms. There is no simply learning the tricks of the trade, the characters need to balance profession and passion for their arts.

Both stories are about two high school students working together in unconventional industries to pursue their dreams. Initially the pairs receive opportunities into their industries pretty quickly, but the main bulk of each of the stories are about the characters working their way up to the top. Dreams can seem impossible, but both Runway and Bakuman. show that you should never give up on them.

Both shows revolve around making it in the fashion industry. The main female character in both shows is a model and the main male character is a designer. Paradise Kiss does seem to be a bit more mature though.

Both focus around a boy who is helping the female lead who is aspiring in the career she is in to try and succeed no matter what kind of obstacles that gets in the characters way.

These anime though slightly different in focus in art presentation for each, makes you want to root for the underdog, see them persevere despite the setbacks, endlessly watch them both struggle and grow for the sake of their aspirations as MCs, and eventually see how they can work on their weaknesses and play with their strengths to reach their full potential! To add, both anime make you feel giddy with anticipation, as you hope for the success they work so hard for. They even inspire you to want to work on your own dreams and to dream of making the impossible possible, which therefore increases  read more

Both are emotional and about the world of fashion. Kuragehime is more mature and cosy while Runway de Waratte is a shonen and has more suspense.

Both feature female leads who are very determined into making it in the respective industry that they are in as well as elements of romance and a focus around fashion as well too.

Runway de Waratte and Blue Period have main characters in high school pursuing artistic careers and facing obstacles making their dreams unattainable. Yatora (in Blue Period), and Chiyuki and Ikuto (Runway de Waratte) learn from and are inspired by their rivals to improve themselves. When everyone around them is talented, experienced, and determined to achieve the same dreams, how far will growth and tenacity help our main characters reach their dreams? Of the two anime, Runway de Waratte has the better pacing.

Both feature a hardworking MC who wants to succeed in their craft despite various hardships in their way. Though Sugar Apple Fairy Tale is more fantasy, and Runway de Waratte is based more in reality, both have somewhat relatable MC's flawed in one way or another.

The shows are about the 2 main characters trying to make it in their desired fields. But while trying to make it, they meet a lot of resistance due to different circumstances and people. They do however have a few people close to them, that helps them to achieve their dreams.

Two series with underdog main characters trying to succeed in a competitive field. Yuri aspires to be a great figure skater like his idol, but has a fragile mental focus and personal flaws that holds him back. Chiyuki aspires to be a runway model, but must overcome rejection from the industry because of her short height. Ikuto aspires to be a fashion designer, but is from a poor family and cannot justify pursuing this dream. Each character must overcome obstacles with the support of friends to improve themselves. Figure staking and fashion has a natural overlapping fanbase.

If you like stories that feature girls with a big dream that have a very bumpy road to the top, this might be for you too. With the reality of the road to fame that is covered with failures and hard lessons and the inspiring never-ending energy to chase your goal we can all learn from. The shows feature other themes like discrimination based on class or wealth, talent or luck and try to convey that hard work will always pay off.

The strong theme of passion are shared in these two shows. They both highlight the hardships that the main characters had to face in order for them to achieve their dream. Both shows also involve the world of art. One about fashion, and one about the traditional instrument, Koto.
report Recommended by Shirayukin
Both animes involve unusual topics (Koto instrument and fashion industry) that aren't mainstream and where most people are simply not interested. However, despite these unusual topics, all the characters from both shows have a passion to achieve their goals against many obstacles. The characters' passion, dedication and enthusiasm draws in the viewers and makes us cheer for them every step of the way. Highly underrated shows in their receptive seasons.

Both series follow a strong willed female lead character who refuses to give up on their passion. Also the general layout and feel of both shows is rather similar: shounen-like setup of hardships and nice slice of life moments. Anyways if you are looking for something similar to Chihayafuru, Runway de Waradatte might just be it.

While those anime seems to have to be completely different on the surface, both of those titles have protagonists, who are aspiring to be The Best in given field (hero/supermodel) despite lacking the very basic and essential trait or talent. Both main characters are exceptionally stubborn in achieving their goals despite others telling them it's futile.
report Recommended by Piromysl
Other than the important fact that Akira's and Ikuto's hairstyle is almost totally the same, both shows feature characters who chose unique career paths and they have to work hard for it. They have to stay in constant competition to improve.

Pursuing a life in the visual arts is difficult, but all the characters in Honey & Clover and Smile Down the Runway are determined to make a path for themselves. Smile Down the Runway has a simpler story centered on a fashion competition where the main characters learn from and are inspired by their rivals to improve themselves. Honey & Clover is a coming-of-age story with an ensemble cast that have their own engaging plotlines. Their approach to a slice of life anime may be different, but you will find yourself invested in the lives of these characters.
