two stories that tell about some sort of conflict in the world of spirits. central characters are mentor and his pupil, who don't get along at first, but develop mutual friendship as the story progresses. both combine tranquil natural sceneries and ghibli-esque vibe with martial arts action in urban setting.

The setting to both the anime is very different - Stranger being a Samurai setting. But again, the relation between a kid and an adult is shown in a very similar way here as well. The last sequence of both the movies boast epic action scenes. The kid character is also very similar in both anime.

Both have human and non-human protagonist having a beautiful bond with each other like a teacher and student but also like a family and the non-human protagonists have cat forms and a similar vibe of youkai and fairies existing in the world with the mix of fantasy and reality, both gives off a peaceful feelings but has interesting stories to unfold with climax.

Well written characters, smooth animation and engaging story! A must see for fans of Ghibli or any fans of great art. Both having a young protagonist that finds themselves in new places, and the dangers they hold

I felt reminded of Yozakura Quartet in multiple stages of the movie. Lovable characters fighting with creative and whimsical powers, in a world that blends spirituality and mythology with our modern world. They have similar vibes for sure!

Seemingly a kid adventure anime at first sight, surprisingly great action and engaging story, Hei will definitely remind you of kid Goku.

the rich world, the deep characters, the themes of nature, humans coexistence with other species, child with a father-like figure, those too are great anime that resemble each other in many aspects. you should watch both!

- supernatural creatures live peacefully in forests - human development destroys nature - conflict builds from smaller fights into all-out war - one main character is from the world of spirits/monsters and the other is from the human world - the two main characters are enemies at first - they slowly learn to get along and collaborate - cute little forest spirits are similar in design

- Anthropomorphic cat main characters - Animation is a big draw in both (Ginga is more avant-garde) - Journey-style storytelling
