Synopsis

Yashiro, the ruthlessly efficient leader of the yakuza group Shinsekai, is also a brazen sexual deviant and masochist. Having been hurt by the only person he had ever fallen in love with, he now engages in strictly physical relationships.

One day, Yashiro's superior assigns Chikara Doumeki, a recently released prisoner, to the role of Yashiro's new bodyguard. The stoic and observant Doumeki is also clumsy and impotent, much to Yashiro's dismay. Although Yashiro has a personal policy to not get involved with his subordinates, he finds himself strangely drawn to Doumeki, who keeps denying his advances. Despite his refusals, Doumeki finds Yashiro beautiful and wishes to stay by his side, yet he knows that he will never be able to satisfy his boss. As the two grow closer, their complicated pasts slowly begin to reveal themselves. Will their histories get in the way of their emergent feelings?

I feel like it's my duty to write a review on this anime, since I'm a huge fan of the manga.

Ever since I heard we were getting an anime adaptation, I was both hyped and very afraid, because it can always go both ways and I didn't want to see something I hold so dear be destroyed. Thankfully, that wasn't the case and I ended up enjoying the anime quite a lot. A lot of details, of course, will remain in the manga alone, since they will need to make at least a 12 episode anime to cover everything, but they actually managed to find ...

Mixed Feelings

I don’t think i’m the target audience for this anime. I haven’t read the manga and even though I enjoy some shounen ai or yaoi, It’s not because I fetishize homosexuals or particularly enjoy watching them get off (something i’ve noticed that a lot of women do, in the same way a lot of men fetishize lebians). There are just some unique stories that BL animes/mangas are more likely to tell, and I'm at the point in my manga/anime watching “career” where I'm hungry for literally anything unique.

The story:
I’m happy to say that this anime comes through very well. It’s not just senseless fanservice, ... the story in many ways revolves around how the main characters’ sexualities have been affected by past trauma. Every sex-scene carries a purpose as we’re able to observe how their feelings are changing and how they’re affected by their past by how they act during sex.

The story is quite simple and can be easily distilled into three sentences: Yashiro, because of past trauma has a hard time feeling love (romantic or platonic), Doumeki because of past trauma has a hard time feeling arousal. Let's see what happens when these two characters meet. Maybe they can solve each other's problems? It’s simple but nicely executed and the opposite way the two leads act makes for a fairly entertaining dynamic, watching the two of them evolve in each other's presence is basically the whole story and it works nicely. It also provides the author with a way too weave in plenty of sex-scenes wihout it feeling forced/unnecessary. Thus pleasing both fujoshis (women who’s entire online identity revolves around fetishizing gay men), and me (a slightly more normal person).

The characters:
As I've already touched on, the characters are fairly decent. The two main characters have pretty opposite personalities and thus play off each other very well. They also both suffered abuse at the hands of parental figures (in slightly different ways though), but it shaped them in basically opposite ways. This allows for some pretty interesting interactions and inner monologues from both that are always fairly intriguing to watch. Women also exist in the anime, Doumeki’s sister is an interesting character in her own right and her relationship with her brother is one that I'm excited to see further evolve. This is fairly rare in yaoi since a lot of it is just glorified masturbation-material for fujoshis, in the same way a lot of harem ecchi is just glorified mastubation-material for dudes and thus doesn’t need to include that many men (at least not with fleshed-out personalities).

In conclusion/TL;DR:
This movie is solid and i’m looking forward to the next installment. The main characters are all fleshed out with solid backstories and have entertaining interactions with each other. The story is simple but still hooks you. This is a higher-tier yaoi for sure and I don't even really want to put it in that box. It’s just a solid movie. The anime also doesn’t glorify or sexualize the male on male rape (i understand that the bar is literally buried in the floor, but it’s still good to mention). It does depict rape, but it’s clear at least for me that those scenes are trying to portray something bad. We can tell this since they’re all in flashbacks that clearly caused emotional pain and they’re way less explicit than the sex-scenes taking place consesually in real-time. If you have some time over one night and want to watch a drama about a yakuza and a former cop, with some emotional issues, grow closer and start to change each other. Then this is for you. It’s certainly solid enough to be given at least one watch.

One of the best BLs I've seen - very well-paced character-centered drama. This movie adapts the first 8 chapters of the manga quite faithfully. There are only some minor differences in scenes.
Delving into some characters' pasts involves uncovering sexual assault and trauma. If you are uncomfortable with that or depictions of sadomasochism, this is not the movie for you.
The story also explores loneliness, unrequited love, and slowly blooming affection really touchingly. While physical relations progress immediately, it's development of emotional ties that is the heart of the plot.
