This show is incredibly compelling, the way that most isekai political/ business drama are. It’s enjoyable, in the sense that I can turn off my brain and be like “I love books too!” And relate to the main character and their struggles about loving and missing books throughout the whole show. But that’s all I can say is good about it, cute at times, the drama and suspense is ok, but other than the MC having one relatable trait, she is annoying. The other characters also feel like paper, 2D characters lacking 3D development. Everything about the show is basic and lackluster, only enjoyable if

I'm surprised at how much I ended up enjoying this show, even though it's a light novel-based isekai. That's usually a bad omen, but Bookworm makes the right decision of rejecting all the Dragon Quest based isekai tropes and instead goes for the mundane subgenre in which the main character tries to live a quiet life, rather than going on an adventure.
It takes a while for the show to pick up the pace, so if you're already interested by the premise, I'd recommend sticking with it for more than just 2 episodes. The beginning is admittedly a big roadblock: The main character Main is just ... Dec 26, 2019
Ascendance of a Bookworm was exactly the type of series I needed.
The story of a girl being transported to another world and chasing her dream of reading a book is simple and perfect. Seeing Mein desperately try to get closer to her dream only for another obstacle to get in her way was really interesting. No matter what she never gave up and even though the series is slow it's totally worth the watch when she finally starts making progress. I love that this anime is something fresh and new, giving us a slow story of a Slice of Life Isekai. The Isekai genre has ... Dec 28, 2019
O M G! Finally an isekai which isn't related with a demon king or something dark!
·Story: 7/10 As I said at the beginning, this story is different from other isekais. It's based on a girl that wants to make books, and yes, the story is all related to that topic. Instead of focusing in fights, it is more about creating or learning the different aspects from the world the girl is transported to in order to achieve her objective. ·Art: 7/10 For the type of genre I can affirm that the scenes in general have good animation despite the fact that they are ''relaxed'' scenes and don't need ... Another season, another Isekai. I'm sure at this point most people are painfully aware of the ever long list of transported-to-another-world stories which has flooded anime for the past few years. Often time whenever I'm approaching the new Isekai that comes out I'm looking for whatever might distinguish it from the competition.
At first glance, our little bookworm girl isn't the overpowered, somewhat arrogant, miss perfection type character, thank goodness. However, she doesn't really stand out much from the crowd and all she really has to go for her is a passion for reading and colorful (hair) cast of new family members and friends. It isn't until ... It ended nicely with a double episode.
So we follow our main character Main. She was a huge bookworm in her old world but in this world books are only for the royalty, but she reincarnates into a poor family. On top of not getting books she is born into a fragile body with a deadly "disease" called the devouring which is a rare case when a poor child is born with magical power. Mains dream is to gets books and make books. We follow Mains adventures on making paper. The characters: We have Main who own a fragile body but a sharp mind. Lutz is Mains ... Jan 2, 2020
A lot of shows this season have the similar premise of "Being sent into a primitive world with knowledge of modern technology and introducing the knowledge to your new world" and this one is my favourite of them all, even beating Dr. Stone by a narrow margin.
You have the usual isekai setup of someone dies and is sent to a new world where they have a hidden yet over powered ability which they can use to save the world from... EXCEPT YOU DON'T! You follow a young woman who only ever dreamt of becoming a librarian because she loves reading and learning from books, when ... Jul 16, 2020
Turns out, Mary Sues come in all shapes and sizes.
This anime is a weird thing to judge. It has barely any conflict. Normally, this is fine for a slice of life story. The bigger issue, is that the conflict that is there is resolved very easily. The driving plot of her wanting to read a book is broken down in to lots of sub-parts (making paper, making wood blocks, etc.). But it means very little. The characterization is also very awkward. The main character is your typical isekai protagonist, so her behavior is appropriate. But all the other children in the show act like they are ... Jun 3, 2020
Ascendance of a Bookworm is good. It's very good, but it's got a rocky start.
Story: The show creates a very interesting narrative. The world-building is phenomenal. It does a really great job of showing the dark underbelly of medieval society with church corruption as well as being somewhat educational. The characters all work off of each other really well, but the first few episodes just drag. I can't say to skip them in good conscience because they set up the jumping-off point for the rest of the show with some plot points and Myne growing as a character, but they're so boring and devoid of ... I own 5k+ books so I may be a little biased but this is really good anime.
If you are looking for light warm heated fluff and about the importance and family and pursuing a dream, this one is for you. The characters are unbelievably cute and enjoyable. Myne the main character is highly relatable, and a welcome change from the usual isekai blockheads. The only cheat she has is the memories of her past life, and it's far more accurate to say she has enough detriments to crush a busload of high schoolers summoned to another world. She isn't perfect, she isn't infallible but ... Aug 27, 2024
This anime is amazing! If you like great storys, with well developed hero's journey, and SPECIALLY BOOKS you probably is going to like Honzuki no Gekokujou.
I love books, so i just felt the heroine's pain when she saw herself in a place without books to read and talk about! The animations are not the best of all, but this dosn't metter when you have a great story behind. Each of the characters have a unique style, not only visual, but especially in the way they express and talk with others. The protagonist is kind and fun, so you're not going to be tired watching ... Ascension of a bookworm's key pro is obviously the world building. This is the first isekai in a while I've seen that genuinely worries about the limits of a citizen in a centuries old world. There's lots of little things it pays attention to and I really like that. In fact, most my issues with the anime aren't good critique, more just choices that don't fit my taste but that's not very valid. Things like the very saturated, cartoony style or the fact that not a lot happens. Things happen, the show just clearly isn't trying to be a drama.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is now a well-known anime with a relative unanimity around its quality. I review the S1+S2 here. (english is not my primary language)
I have been quite disappointed by these two seasons... The anime is the story of a 20-year-old librarian who is reincarnated in a 5-year-old girl body after her death, in a new fantasy/medieval world. All the anime spin around the fact that this new world has not yet invented the printing and so books are rare and expensive. The anime have a lot of problems in its writing and I will discuss about them, but before, let's talk about the art ... Mar 20, 2020
This is not your typical isekai.
When people think of the term "isekai" as it relates to anime- a fantasy where the main character is transported to another world, the first thing that comes to mind is a magic-based power fantasy with an inexplicably overpowered protagonist. The protagonist's main goal in that world is usually to defeat a boss of some sort, like say, the Demon King, and being accompanied by a harem is not uncommon. As such, the isekai genre as a whole is typically criticized for being trashy and largely overdone. Ascendance of a Bookworm is the very antithesis of that. In fact, it's the ... Dec 27, 2019
Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen (2019)
Motosu Urano dies and is reborn into a little girl called Myne. She is obsessed with literature. She is a cute girl who wants to continue her life in this way. The world has magic but it is not commonly used effectively as you would expect. She is born into a lower-class family that lives within its means well but not at the level she needs. Thus begins the journey to getting her books. The art style is nice and looks great. Myne towards the end when she uses her magic is great ... Mar 24, 2024
Even though I've seen shows that are objectively worse, this is the first show that has made me want to pull my brains out through my ears with a metal hook. It seems this show has been decently well received, and I myself can't quite express what it is about this show that irritates me so much, so I can't guarantee everyone else will have the same experience. But if I had to narrow down just what is so insanity inducing about this anime, it's the fact that she's in her twenties, but only the audience knows. I've never moreso empathized with Candace from Phineus

I think this series is fine overall, but has some glaring problems that makes my eyes roll every other time.
For starters the whole maturity and romance displayed by 5~7 y/o kids simple makes me uncomfortable, it would be much more plausible if they were just 4~5 years older, as they were just becoming teenagers and have their feelings blooming and what not. Main is an exception since she was an "adult" before, but the whole lack of common sense and getting flustered by a 5~6 boy and what not makes me doubt. The whole devouring plot line was overdue and went way too long before ... Dec 11, 2019
Information and Knowledge are the most valuable things to exist in this world if you can utilize them properly. This what I experienced til now watching this anime.
Even though it's similar to other Isekai anime it's also not.The main character is named Maine who had unquenchable thirst for knowledge in her previous life. Thus she was inclined to reading books as much as she could. Her affection towards books was so much that even when she was dying her only desire was to get to read books on her next reincarnation. This is the part where this anime stands out from other Isekai. She was blessed with the ... Sep 10, 2024
Never felt like writing a review but seeing this anime score so high compelled me to write this one.
The premise is very bland, the script is awful and full of plotholes, main character is annoying, extremely childish (she's in the body of a child, but was supposed be an adult), episodes dwell on the most trivial, boring and mundane details and characters. Many praise it's world building but it's all very flat and basic, and the way things work is always conveniently suited to the Myne's objectives. Like the world building, the magic system serves purely as deus ex machina plot device. One of the earlier ... Mar 26, 2023 "Ascendance of a Bookworm" isn't your typical isekai anime. Unlike other shows in the genre, there are no demons or monsters to be killed here. Instead, it's a wonderful journey of a bookworm who's reincarnated in a world without books. The protagonist is Myne a sickly young girl live in poverty. She was originally Urano Motosu, a librarian in her past life and her only purpose now is to be able to read books once again. However, her journey is far from easy due to the limitations of the world that she's in, and it seems like the whole world is against her in her ... |
