Synopsis

One fateful day, Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent with a dim future, gets a miraculous chance to turn it all around when he throws himself in front of a moving car to save a young boy. His ultimate sacrifice is so out of character that the authorities of the spirit realm are not yet prepared to let him pass on. Koenma, heir to the throne of the spirit realm, offers Yuusuke an opportunity to regain his life through completion of a series of tasks. With the guidance of the death god Botan, he is to thwart evil presences on Earth as a Spirit Detective.

To help him on his venture, Yuusuke enlists ex-rival Kazuma Kuwabara, and two demons, Hiei and Kurama, who have criminal pasts. Together, they train and battle against enemies who would threaten humanity's very existence.

Overall, this anime was slightly above average. The extreme high praise is due to nostalgia clouding the perception of older viewers, and it being early its genre. Though the extremely negative reviews are coming from people comparing it to Hunter x Hunter. I'll say that I came in with an open mind, and to judge based on how I personally enjoy it. I'm not going to compare it to Hunter x Hunter, and I'm not going to excuse the writing simply because "it's old". With that said, here's my review!

I will say that the characters are solid. The designs ... are unique and the motivations are unique, for the most part. I really enjoyed Hiei, Kuwabara, Kurama, Kuwabara's sister (Shizuru), Toguro, Genkai, and Sakyo. Though even Hiei and Kuwabara would frustrate me at times, I overall did like them. That's one reason why my rating is high, because of how great some of the characters were. I especially like Kuwabara's archetype which is a 'bad' character with a moral code. I don't know, I'm just a sucker for those types.

Some of the arcs were great, and you can see the brilliance of Togashi's writing. The entire twist with Toguro, the romance of Sakyo, Kuwabara's honor code, and Hiei's character development. Well... Scratch the romance of Sakyo, because that was an anime original apparently. Extremely rare, almost non-existent, Studio Pierrot W. My favorite arc was the Chapter Black Arc. Yu Yu Hakusho had been building on to good arcs. The first arc was okay. It was just to establish the plot. The Dark Tournament arc was just meh for the most part. It had irritating tropes that I greatly disliked. The butt monkey, the person that never loses, etc. Though the plot twist around that arc made me really respect it. It was a great twist that restructured the entire plot of the show. The brilliance of great evil made compelling with romance. I don't give AF what anyone says, I found the romance of Sakyo to be cute. I don't know... I like it... Chapter Black followed after the Dark Tournament, and it was the peak of Yu Yu Hakusho. I enjoyed the characters and the intelligence needed to win the fights. I liked the strategy that they had to use. I also enjoyed how it flipped a few things as well, regarding the villains. Togashi is brilliant at making you hate a person, and then changing your mind about them. You seriously go from wanting to see a villain getting beaten, to wanting to see them win. It was brillaint.

Unfortunately... Chapter Black was the Peak. The Three Kings arc was OBVIOUSLY rushed. It's as if Togashi got tired of it. I did read about him getting frustrated that he couldn't do what he wanted to do, which is why he ended it "like a coward". His words, not mine. I understand his frustration and why he ended it, but it still doesn't excuse this mess of an arc. I will say that there is SOME brilliance in the arc, but it was overshadowed by how repetitive and bad it was. I'll never forgive Togashi for the ending, which is responsible for the current trash state of heteronormative romance in Shonen to this very day.

With that said, I do recommend this anime. It's not bad. It's actually above average. Though uh... Just skip to the last episode after you finish the Chapter Black Saga.

Mixed Feelings

Its ok...

For a 90's shounen anime its kinda impressive but its didn't age too well.
Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed the show none the less but it's not even close to one of the best shounen ever made.
My biggest issue with the story is the lack of identity.every arc the tone of the show changes drastically and new ideas are put in out of nowhere without much explanation.

There were 2 things that I really liked.
Team Urameshi were a very good and interesting cast of characters that made me keep watching even tho the plot went of the rails (especially Kuwabara who was the most ...

The show starts mostly underwhelming; goes into straight up awful and disappointing by the end of the Dark Tournament arc; then goes on to its best written and IMO its only good arc, the Chapter Black; then hastily finishes neatly but underwhelmingly, supposedly diverging from the manga which the author didn't even want to work on at that point.

I wanted to see hxh's older sibling show, and even if it was mostly underwhelming mixed in with awful, it wasn't all bad. Crazy how much better hxh is, but there were hints of that brilliance in the Chapter Black arc which I could guess might've been ...
