Preliminary Spoiler
Dec 27, 2019
The original 1997-1998 Chuuka Ichiban! series can be said as the OG to cooking shows like the commons we all see with similar shows pop up and got popular in their own right (i.e. Shokugeki no Soma), and it's considered a classic for anyone who wants to get introduced to the cooking gourmet genre. However, to give a summarized backdrop, the OG series covered only the first third of the insanely long 52-episode series with the relevant manga, so take it as you will about fillers. The reason was, due to a problem in serialization in 1997 (mostly translation errors), the "Shin" (真) part came ...

This story follows Mao and his friends as they battle the evil entity known as the 'Cooking underworld' to collect a set of legendary utensils that grants the user immense power. The anime's plot is decent but it strikes me as a little weird due to the subject matter. Cooking and food is the show's major driver and it's set in China giving it some distinction from a show like Shokugeki no Soma. I liked some of the food battles and the focus on Chinese cuisine. That said, I think the show took itself a little too serious. Because no matter how tense things get, ...

Preliminary (6/12 eps)
A serious disappointment compared to the original. It's as generic as many other 2010s anime, and feels like a cheap attempt to cash in on the popularity of Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars). Much like NuTrek, it feels like it was done by people who aren't fans and failed to understand what was so appealing about the original. There's almost no emphasis on showing the cooking (relying on short abstract imagery instead of showing action in context), the pacing is too fast and leaves little time to explain plot points or build up significant drama, the artists put highlights and bloom on everyone even when ...

Preliminary (3/12 eps)
So much nostalgia seeing this anime got new visuals on recent years compared to the old one but was quickly disappointed right off the bat after seeing first few episodes.

The old cooking master boy Mao knows how to cut vegies with flashy style together with the entertaining flying thin slices and precision cuts. opening bowls were so much more dramatic with the blinding rays of light as soon as the lid comes off..

the 2019 one sucks as seen on episode 1 Mao already forgot his flashy moves on using the knife and cuts things on chunks. even his dish looks lackluster. storywise it seems to ...
