Synopsis

The day before her birthday, Akane is asked to retrieve her birthday present from her aunt Chi's shop. While looking around, she chances upon a mysterious slab with a hand-shaped cavity in it. Curious, she places her hand in it, and—to her surprise—it fits perfectly. The next thing she knows, a strange alchemist named Hippocrates and his apprentice Pipo appear, calling Akane the legendary "Goddess of the Green Wind."

The two eccentrics claim to be from a different world connected to the shop's basement. With the peace of their world in jeopardy, Hippocrates and Pipo seek the help of the only one capable of saving it from destruction: Akane. Forced to accompany them on a journey to restore the land's harmony, Akane—with her aunt in tow—sets off to discover a magical new place.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

Pros:
+Character and world design
+Captures magical Ghibli inspired feel
+Environmental message

Cons:
-Propaganda for the privileged (although probably unintentional)
-Poorly written villain

Thoughts:
The immediately obvious selling point of this film is its visuals. The characters and world are captivating. They bring out a similar spark to Ghibli films. Throughout the film, the characters travel across this breathtaking "wonderland", and boy is it gorgeous. However, the world is losing its color due to drought. In order to save it, the main character must go and rescue the prince who can perform a ritual to bring back the rain. They make a point to differentiate this world from Earth, which read more

This movie makes me very conflicted, I want to like this movie, and I do, but there's no doubt in my mind that there's a lot of flaws holding it back.

Overall: 6

TLDR: Did this movie make me laugh? Definitely, and fairly often, actually. Did it make me roll my eyes? Quite often on that count as well, haha. But most importantly, did I enjoy my movie going experience? I would say yes, and I think I can recommend it without too many reservations.

Character: 7

I want to begin with this category because it definitely feels like the writers wanted this film to be a character driven read more

I love Ilya Kuvshinov's artwork, which was what interested me into viewing Birthday Wonderland because his style was prevalent throughout the film. However, in the end, his beautiful art style couldn't save this boring and predictable film.

The story itself, for me, felt lacking. Events that have happened, for me, felt like they came out of nowhere because it's cause and effect felt deficient. Not only that, specific scenes in this film were unnecessary and either contributed nothing or information dump that made me yawn or want to do something else while the characters were talking at their dinner table (BORING.)

However, the parallel world the characters read more
