It has almost been a year since the release of Rune's Pharmacy upon my review of the show. I had seen the first episode and only just caught up with the two new episodes however the end does not seem in sight so I will be revising this review if new releases change my mind about it. I think Rune's is a basic and safe show which tries to be edgy here and there but falls flat where the only frontier it seems to be pushing is the Ugly Bastard front which is due for some innovation and the only positive for Rune's is injecting
some life into the continued evolution of the Ugly Bastard however it is purely subjective if that can be seen as a positive.
Story : 6
Rune's Pharmacy so far has not had a compelling plot line. (I do not consider this a spoiler as it is the first scene in the show) Erunelle 's parents die and leave her with a mountain of debt and Erunelle goes on some wacky adventures in order to pay off that debt while working as a budding pharmacist apprentice. Mediocre plot that seems in play in order to facilitate all the misadventures Erunelle embarks upon and from the first few episodes there is a very slow plot progression with relationships just beginning to bud. As I have stated, Rune's is an ongoing series and what we have received may be an introduction to a spiraling plot but I have might doubts as a hentai series rarely goes to 6 episodes and from that it feels like we are at a halfway point. That being said however, I think the story can pick up in the upcoming episode and we can go on one longer story arc that calls back to certain characters and other small things that seem to lay the groundwork for better things to come. I'm taking marks off Rune's for now however it has the potential to finish of strong and I only hope for great things for it
Art : 7
There is a vibrancy to the world that sometimes is missing in hentai. The background and world are drawn spectacularly but that isn't the main focus of the usual fapper is it? Our characters do not follow the traditional artstyle and skews from it slightly and while a couple characters had some typical hallmarks of the Ugly Bastard they did not feel like throwaway characters which gave me the feeling that they will comeback later on and therein lies the potential for this story to get better. In my intro, I mention that this show pushes the Ugly Bastard into the lime light after being cast aside for some time and this is evident in a couple of characters like Ugly Boarstard at the start of the show, Cyclops-sama and the Lord which invokes the Ugly Bastard feeling of disgust but pulls away from generic fat guy with glasses and a large frame. We understand the towering presence that these character has over Erunelle and the powerlessness to do anything to stop them which is what we expect to get from Ugly Bastard. Just putting in more detail into these characters puts them miles above your usual Ugly Bastard and says you shouldn't put yourself into Ugly Bastard's position but into our character's position. The biggest compliment I can give to character design is just that we have characters that only have one scene so far and yet we feel like they aren't just one-offs and I hope this assumption is accurate.
Character : 5
Although the characters visually feel unique, they certainly feel flat in terms of their personalities. To be fair to Rune's, many of the characters only show up in one or two scenes and I hope they come up again to show us a different side to them or to enhance the traits they already exhibit. I also do enjoy the interactions Erunelle has with her handler in showing us some humanity to how she is treated however we only have small snippets of that throughout the current runtime. Erunelle is by far the weakest character for me which is absolutely terrible for a show that is centered around her. She does not show any growth throughout and this concerns me because she has been raped by creatures thrice her size and she shows none of the indicators of being 'broken' which is to be expected in hentai. If not for that, we also did not see any romantic attachments to the futanari despite a pure and clean interaction which could've been a stronger point for the show. Overall Rune's is filled with some good supporting side characters but our main heroine lets us down by not showing much emotion.
Rune's seems like a mediocre show for now, trying hard to appeal to a couple different groups like lolicons and futabois which was the only highlight for me to be frank. There seems to be sprinklings of plot being laid out for us right now and my hope is that the show will be able to use these to develop their plot more in the last few episodes rather than giving us more short stories that don't even change Erunelle. This show would be a quick and easy fap to recommend to a friend, one fap per episode and one episode per session cause there's really no rush to get through the story as episode 3 leaves us on a leading cliffhanger
