Yuru Camp△ Movie

As time marches forward, Rin Shima, Nadeshiko Kagamihara, and their friends have grown into full-fledged adults. Now with careers and responsibilities, they can no longer freely spend their days camping and adventuring. However, Chiaki Oogaki, who currently works for the Yamanashi Tourism Organization, reunites the group as she comes up with an exciting proposal—to build a campground together to revitalize an abandoned patch of land from their homeplace, the Yamanashi Prefecture.

Motivated by this ambitious project, the girls combine their efforts to create an environment where future generations can enjoy unique moments as they once did, all while reminiscing the charms of camping from their high school days.

"The Yuru Camp Movie Review" or "How I Learned to Leave the High School Fantasy and Love Adulthood"

A lot of these types of shows (whatever you want to call them, CGDCT, slice of life, comfycore) tend to focus exclusively on school life and romanticize it. And they usually end when the characters graduate, because I guess adulthood sucks and why would you make a show about it?

Obviously, Yuru Camp is literally one of those shows. But the movie does something refreshing by timeskipping to when the characters are in their early 20's - and they all have jobs and apartments and other adult things that ... they have to deal with, which we get to see a decent amount of (they're not just something mentioned in passing that we never see). The film starts off with Rin's morning routine and commute and a bit of the characters' lives at their jobs which is quite nice.

The movie doesn't shy away from how rough adulthood can be - such as Rin getting her proposal in a meeting rejected for being too ambitious, Nadeshiko getting scolded by her boss at her retail job for suggesting customers to try the store next door (just to name non-spoiler occasions). But at the same time it shows how much being an adult opens life up and what you can achieve - owning your own car so that you and your dog can go on an adventure anywhere, or banding together to build a campsite in cooperation with the local council's tourism board - showing us that adulthood, can too, be comfy.

Sadly the rest of the film is not the greatest imo - it is 2 hours long and quite drawn out if I'm honest, with characters having long conversations that don't really add anything or just sitting around eating lunch. I think I'm in the minority here and for most people that's part of the comfy vibe - I would have preferred more substance.

But I really enjoyed seeing the world of work through a slice of life perspective and it was fun to see unusual things like the process of terraforming a natural location and building infrastructure - as usual, Yuru Camp is quite educational.

For me personally, this film has given me a renewed sense of optimism and acceptance around being in my 20's.

This is one of the best feel good series for me when I just wanted to watch something slow and relaxing. In this movie, it did not fail me at all with the reunited warm friendship among the now adult characters and the passion they still have towards camping. Of course, the food that the show portrayed, although mostly simple fare, never failed to make me drool. It was amazing how the art made the food looked so delicious. Soundtrack was wonderful and soothing to the ears too.

Watching this, it made me think that even with all the hustle bustle of everyday life, one must ... never forget to slow down and take time occasionally to indulge in some of our passions in order to fully enjoy and appreciate life.

The anime is good but the OVAs and this movie are kinda the low points to the series.
It mostly feels like an attempt to replicate the anime without actually having enough of a plot to justify the 2 hour run-time. I understand the movie isn't canon and this likely explains why it feels less polished.

The good:
Recognisable, likeable characters and great soundtrack, animation seems better.

The bad:
Pacing, humour is weaker and less original at times, animation doesn't focus on scenery which is generally it's strength.

-Instead of beautiful scenery being the focus of quiet moments, we get long, drawn out scenes of the girls... cutting grass, and ... sitting around sadly because they can't cut grass (for like 30 damn minutes).
-Instead of looking at different ways to use the natural environment to camp, we contemplate unmoving faces as people pause and say 'Hm' at each other; you know, adding nothing to the story and definitely not worth slowing down a scene to show multiple times.
-Instead of great camping meals that highlight realistic ways to eat well in nature, we get several non-camp related meals that drag on and on and on and offer no real educational value (that crab scene was honestly uncomfortable ASMR more than anything).
-Instead of a steady stream of light-hearted situational jokes, we get spaced out humour, most notably, throwback jokes taken from the anime series.

It's like they took the general elements of the anime and made a bad photocopy and hoped that'd replicate the soul. It's servicable for those who care for the general Yuru vibe or nostalgia but this shouldn't have been a film (2 episodes would have sufficed).
