Cike Wu Liuqi

To the casual eye, the amnesiac bounty hunter Wu Liuqi looks quite intimidating. With his deadly telekinetic scissor techniques and his ability to seamlessly transform into anything, one would not expect his modest demeanor. In fact, Wu is quite terrible at his job. Often times the freelancer can be found botching an assassination or targeting the wrong person. While his failures could be due to his subpar skills, it usually boils down to him being a normal kid, with a heart unsuited for his line of work.

Accompanied by his feathered friend Dai Bo, Wu is on a simple quest to regain his memories. Although his inconspicuous day job as a hairdresser and his after-hours occupation are simply a means for him to repay debt, his various ventures seem to intertwine with his pursuit to recover his lost past.

Scissor Seven is an example of alternating serious, emotional scenes and comedy done right. Finding a show which can provide their audiences with such an emotional rollercoaster and good comedic timing quite like this one is no easy task.

This season features a cast of diverse characters who do a great job at capturing the viewer's hearts within the relatively short amount of screen time each one of them gets. Each one of them has a unique backstory and their own reasons for being the way they are, you can't help but feel attached to even the ones who don't seem very likeable at first ... glance. (savage granny for the win) Hopefully we will get to watch the show explore the character dynamics in more detail in the next seasons seeing as this one did not focus one that aspect very much. Although we didn't get to see that much of the main antagonist of this story until later in the season, they certainly do a good job at peaking one's interest.

While the art style isn't what you'd typically expect from an anime, it does grow on you quite fast. The fight scenes are certainly the parts where you can appreciate the animation the most, they are dynamic and surprisingly well executed, definitely an aspect of the anime that stands out.

A critique one might have is about the pacing getting weird at times, we didn't see much world building until the last 2-3 episodes and it felt like all the action was crammed in there instead of being distributed evenly throughout the season, however it does more or less make sense because they had to introduce the characters first, they just took their time with it.

The music is good overall, especially the ending theme : )

Let's hope the show can upkeep this level of quality in the following seasons.

Mixed Feelings

The spouse and kid had previously seen this Netflix hidden gem, and once season 3 dropped we committed to a re-watch so our memories would be fresh.

Art 3/10

Let's get the bad news out of the way first - I HATE the art. It's terrible for 2018. The style, everything. I'm guessing they did this series as a "proof of concept" as the episodes are short but it's obvious the art is low quality. The interesting thing is if you watch it you can almost see the manga panels from which it is animated. This scene, one panel. Transition. That scene, the next panel. I've ... never experienced that when watching an anime before.

Story - 6/10

Wu Liuqi, a Beef Offal seller with great Scissors skills is persuaded by Bo Dai (his Blue Chicken friend) to become an assassin so they can earn more money to pay off their debts, we later find out these are medical debts and they're USA medical system level HUGE medical debts. In the meantime our hero moonlights as a barber, applying his scissor skills to hair, naming his Salon Dai Bo Jo which is a funny play on the Mandarin Dai Jo Bo "It will be all right" a reassuring phrase. His mis-adventures as a bargain priced assassin with a heart of gold are hilarious, even if parts are predictable.

Sound - 7/10

This is interesting. If you watched the subbed version it's a bit jarring as Bo Dai and Liuqi, our main character, speak Mandarin until they get upset, and then both tend to lapse back into native Cantonese. It is a subtle point that when Liuqi remembers parts of his past self (amnesia) he regresses back to always speaking in Cantonese. This is a small, but subtle language play most people would not pick up,

Character - 7/10

The length of the episodes (they're short) means the characters are not as well developed as they could be with more time. We get the basic view of each character archetype:-
* Wu Liuqi - assassin with heart of gold, and some power
* Bo Dai - gruff mentor / protector
* Fei, Xiao - translated to little flyer, the mysterious get out of jail free sidekick
* Thirteen - another assassin and obligatory love interest
The smaller supporting characters are also interesting and provide a lot of the humor.

Enjoyment 7/10

Generally, comedy / parody anime is hard to do well, but this Donghua has no problems pulling it off, in fact, I'm astounded because Scissor 7 has no business being as funny as it is. It has a very "Mob Psycho 100" feel to it and is definitely entertaining.

Overall 5/10

I laughed a lot, but can't rate this higher due to my hatred of the art. This needs a bigger art budget, and then we'll really see this take off.

I have no idea what season 2 is about, but this feels like a ten-episode prologue for what's to come. To give you an idea of what to expect, this feels like One-Punch Man for 10-year-olds but with an incompetent, amnesiac assassin rather than superheroes and monsters. The music is literally the same in every episode. The humor is amusing at first, but it gets really annoying after the second episode.
Personal recommendation: if you're barely interested in watching it, at least do so with any dub you understand and play it while multi-tasking on 1.2 or 1.5 speed. That's what I did. You won't be ... wasting so much time if you do so. But if that still doesn't sound good to you, feel free to skip this show entirely.
