Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai

The Magnificent Kotobuki and Girls und Panzer are both lighthearted but has tons of action (no one dies in the fight although in the magnificent kotobuki it could be implied). They also have the same detail and focus to the equipment that is the highlight of the show (WWII tanks and WWII Japanese planes). They also have the similar weakness which is the characters, in GuP's case its the amount of characters they have while the kotobuki focuses more on the dogfights than character development. With that said, both have a pretty good main - main character that can be considered developed, Miho and Kylie. They are both directed by Mizushima, Tsutomu who gives life to these old machines. Gup tanks sounds great but kotobuki's 1st episode alone overshadows the whole sound design of the gup series. read more

Similarities : - a squad of pilots composed only with females fighters - air fights - more funny / relaxing than serious (even with the war context) Differences : - Girly Air Force takes place in an alternative current world (including high technology planes & "upgraded pilots" - Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai takes place in an alternative older world (I would say XIXth century approximately) - GAF has fast & explosive fights while Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai figures lower fights but more skilled (lot of maneuvers) - Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai's animation and design are really different (especially about movements). 

Cute Girls Flying Military Planes, essentially. In 2015, the director of "Shirobako" - Tsutomu Mizushima - would make an OVA showcasing the pilot episode for "Third Aerial Girls Squad". Four years later, he would go on to direct a full fledged series of 12 episodes starring cute girls in military planes for the 2019 show "The Magnificent Kotobuki". In a certain way, one can say that the second OVA episode for "Shirobako" is a prototype for The Magnificent Kotobuki". The main difference of the two being that "Third Aerial Girls Squad" would feature third generation jet fighters going up against (presumably) an alien invasion force, whereas "The Magnificent Kotobuki" would involve World War II fighter planes squaring off various human factions.
