5-toubun no Hanayome (The Quintessential Quintuplets)

Fuutarou Uesugi is an ace high school student, but leads an otherwise tough life. His standoffish personality and reclusive nature have left him friendless, and his father is debt-ridden, forcing his family to scrape by.

One day during his lunch break, Uesugi argues with a female transfer student who has claimed "his seat," leading both of them to dislike each other. That same day, he is presented with a golden opportunity to clear his family's debt: a private tutoring gig for a wealthy family's daughter, with a wage of five times the market price. He accepts the proposal, but is horrified to discover that the client, Itsuki Nakano, is the girl he confronted earlier!

After unsuccessfully trying to get back on Itsuki's good side, Uesugi finds out that his problems don't end there: Itsuki is actually a quintuplet, so in addition to her, he must also tutor her sisters—Miku, Yotsuba, Nino, and Ichika—who, despite the very real threat of flunking, want nothing to do with a tutor. However, his family's livelihood is on the line so Uesugi pushes on, adamant in his resolve to rid the sisters of their detest for studying and successfully lead them to graduation.

The anime its a harem at the core,but its kinda relatable if you but away the idea that its a harem.I love the characters especially Miku(for me its the best out of the quintuplets).The ,,quints'' are relatable,they represent a normal lads even though they are rich. The artstyle is stunning making it one of my favourite artstyles.It is full of emotions most of the anime.I still dont understand Futaros decision at the end of the anime(season 2+ movie),im sure you will question him too(or not).The story is kind of unique,yoou rarely see romance animes about quintuplets.Im 98% sure that you will fall in love with ...

An idea that would not occur to just anyone, although it is interesting, the truth is that I do not think they have done it in the best way. It is simple in its story, a high school boy needs money because he is poor, he gets involved as a tutor and gives himself He says that he has to teach a group of girls that they are sisters and quintuplets. The new or the strange will always be interesting to human beings, that is why this series will simply interest anyone, but will it really contribute something interesting? The answer is simpler than you ... think and it is no. This special thing, the truth is, almost doesn't add much, it only gives the story that aspect of the girls being sisters, the plot revolves around who the protagonist will marry since in a flashback they show us that one of these sisters was the one with whom got married
So the whole plot will revolve around this, that is why it is a simple harem teenage love series, a boy surrounded by girls who all like the protagonist but only one can stay with him. There will be interesting moments such as discovering who these girls are or what their goals, objectives and concerns are good at. At the same time, the truth is like any love series, it does not touch on controversial plots or different ones from what we have seen before.
If I would recommend it, the truth is that I wouldn't, or well it depends, if you like love series I'm sure you'll be interested in it without a doubt, also if you want to start this genre with the series you'll also like it, but for me the truth is no. I think it is the best of the genre and although it entertained me, it was not good, it only hooks you with the classic techniques of this type of series (romance).

Una idea que no se le ocurriría a cualquier persona, que aunque es interesante la verdad no creo que lo hayan hecho de la mejor manera es simple en su historia, un chico de secundaria necesita dinero porque es pobre, se mete como tutor y se da cuenta que tiene que enseñarle a un grupo de chicas que son hermanas y a su vez quintillizas. Lo nuevo o lo raro siempre será interesante al ser humano, es por eso que está serie a simple viste le va a interesar a cualquiera pero ¿en verdad aportara algo interesante?, la respuesta es mas simple de lo que piensan y es no. Esta cosa especial la verdad casi no aporta mucho, solo le da a la historia ese aspecto de que las chicas sean hermanas, la trama giran en con quien se casara el protagonista ya que en un flashback nos muestran que una de estas hermanas fue con quien se caso.
Entonces toda la trama girara en esto, por eso mismo es una simple serie de amor adolescente de harem, un chico rodeado de chicas que a todas les gusta el protagonista pero solo una se puede quedar con este. Habrá momentos interesantes como lo son descubrir quienes son estas chicas o en que son buenas sus metas, objetivos y preocupaciones. A su vez la verdad es como cualquier serie de amor, no toca tramas controversiales o diferentes a la que ya hayamos visto antes.
Si la recomendaría la verdad es que no, o bueno depende, si te gustan las series de amor estoy seguro que te interesara está sin lugar a duda, también si quieres empezar este genero con la serie también te gustara, pero para mi la verdad no creo que sea la mejor del genero y a mi aunque me entretuvo no se me hizo buena, solo te engancha con las clásicas técnicas de este tipo de serie (romance).

The Quintessential Quintuplets is a fantastic idea; for a different anime. As hard as it is to believe from the premise, 5 quirky, failing quintuplets all falling in love with their hard-ass tutor who's just there for the fat pay cheque is the synopsis of a love story that is supposed to be taken seriously. I went into The Quintessential Quintuplets under the impression that it'd be a comedy like Kaguya-sama or Konosuba, where the ridiculousness of the character writing is used to create amusingly absurd plotlines for each episode, instead, I get the ... impression that I'm supposed to be watching the developments of 5 serious, deep relationships with 1 dude and 5 girls who are siblings.

Now some of you filthy weebs who haven't seen the show out there will be thinking "but Curls! Did you start watching anime yesterday? Do you not know what a harem is? They're supposed to be fanservice! Go back to Sunday school if you're gonna look down on our harems". While it certainly isn't my thing, I can see the appeal of that kind of fanservice and feel no ill will towards those that partake: if a show is good at catering to that audience, then those shows deserve positive reviews from those who are that way inclined. However, I just can't bring myself to believe that a simple, fanservice-focussed harem anime was the intention here, there are attempts to create a genuine romance here, with a protagonist who's not a self insert for the viewer and character writing that's designed create drama that pushes characters to develop their relationships with one another.

There are a variety of problems with this use of the show's premise. The most apparent of which is the dividing of run time between each of the 5 relationships, because the central mystery driving the show forward is which of the girls Futaro will end up with by the end, all 5 potential relationships must seem like a plausible scenario, which results in the run time given for each character to develop their relationship with Futaro is divided by 5. Inevitably, this means that Futaro's relationship with each of the girls is criminally underdeveloped: I couldn't tell you why any of them are attracted to him, they all have pretty weak romantic chemistry and I really don't care about which one he ends up marrying. Additionally, even if they were given all the time in the world, none of the girls (if their characters remain the same as they have been throughout season 1) will be able to have a deep enough relationship with Futaro to justify this show's status as a high quality romance anime. For a romance in a story to work, each of the two characters in question must have something to learn on an emotional level from the other. A recent example of this done well is Gojo and Marin's budding romance in My Dress Up Darling (minor spoilers for this ahead): Gojo admires Marin's confidence in who she is and what she cares about, while Marin admires Gojo's diligent, conscientious attitude towards his passions (notice how she falls in love with him in episode 5 only after learning about this aspect of his personality in episode 4). The characters are different in ways that facilitate them growing through their relationship and this is the primary factor behind what makes their relationship so heart-warming and engaging to watch. Compare this to The Quintessential Quintuplets and it becomes clear how lacking the show is in this pretty essential department, what on Earth is Futaro going to learn from Itsuki? Or Miku? Or Yotsuba? Same goes for the other way around, Futaro is kind of a dick who cares about his sister and studies a lot, other than the contents of textbooks, how can the girls learn anything from this guy? So far, it seems as if the intention is for the quintuplets to collectively contribute to Futaro's development and collectively develop thanks to Futaro. Even if this was done well, (which it isn't but this review is already going to be too long), it makes it impossible for any girl in particular to have romantic chemistry with him.

Strangely enough, I hope that the quintuplets I like most, Ichika and Miku, don't end up with the protagonist, because I'm still not sure whether he even cares about them all that much. This isn't a situation where love blossoms slowly between two individuals who may not have originally been interested in each other, its them being in love with him and it not being reciprocated in the slightest for the entire season. Perhaps this is another consequence of the split across 5 romances, if his feelings for each develop slowly, it's going to be season 60 before he looks at any of them romantically. Once again, this approach could be great for an absurdist comedy: I'd love to watch some uninterested sociopath herd 5 flavours of dumbass, all of which want to get with him and beat the others while avoiding study as much as possible. You could do so much with that, Futaro could use their feelings to get them to study while still remaining a sympathetic enough character with his motivation to provide for his family and the twins could compete with one another in their own unique ways for his attention: it's a comedy writing jungle gym that is entirely unexplored in favour of a subpar romantic drama.

Essentially, The Quintessential Quintuplets is an anime that takes itself too seriously. The voice acting, most of the dialogue and the animation are competent enough, but the direction behind the writing leaves much to be desired. I didn't enjoy The Quintessential Quintuplets, but I really think I could have done if the intentions behind its story were better planned out.
