Shin Evangelion Movie:||

Following NERV's failed attempt to retrieve the Spears of Longinus and carry out the Human Instrumentality Project, the destruction caused by the Fourth Impact has been largely averted. In a state of disarray, Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Shikinami, and Rei Ayanami travel to Village 3—a survivor settlement free from Earth's ruination. There, Shinji slowly comes to terms with his past, developing an entirely different life from his days as an Evangelion pilot.

Meanwhile, NERV makes preparations to continue the Instrumentality Project by means of a new Impact. When WILLE's main aerial battleship arrives at the village, Shinji decides to board, believing that he can help by piloting an Evangelion. As new secrets are uncovered and a battle between WILLE and NERV approaches, the future of Earth hangs in the balance. Can Shinji save humanity and the rest of the world one last time?

I enjoyed the rebuild much more than the original series. A sacrilege maybe, worthy of being exiled even. However, I will gladly take the punishment if only to NOT endorse the chocies made in the original Evangalion show concering Misato (you know what I'm talking about) and that one Shinji scene (you also know what I'm talking about).

The story here was more concise and explained in a way that still made the ole hamster in my head spin the wheel, it still hurts my brain, just a little less. The word I'm looking for is, it is far less abstract than the OG show, but ... still very deeply connected to it by the themes expressed in the rebuild. What really pulled me in, however, was Mari. A new adition to the team and a very welcome one as far as I'm concerned. She brings the crazy fun and pilots an Eva in a way that would make Vin Diesel blush. Seriously, she should be in a racing anime. But she changes the dynamics of the OG trio in a way that's extremely endearing. The dynamic being: Asuka (smoll angry), Shinji (perv), Rei (quiet and tragic), Mari (Chaotic evil) and Misato (mommy sorry).

Mistao is better (THAT scene doesn't exist in the rebuild),
Asuka is better (eye patch),
Shinji is still tainted by the OG, I'm sorry I just CAN'T unsee it,
Rei actually has voice lines, so if she's your favorite at least there's a reason now,
Mari is top waifu regardless.

No that wasn't a poem, but the Rebuild will always and forever be the classic for me.

Mixed Feelings

The final Rebuild film ends with a whimper. I felt that all the meta-textual stuff was a bit much and pulled me out of the film. The last 30 min feels like a rush to give development to various characters to provide an emotional and thematic send off. Instead of focusing on being the final film in a series of movies, it decides to focus on it’s place as the finale to a franchise. It lacks cohesion and is only somewhat satisfying in regards to its themes. The CG ranged from good to jarring. On a positive note, “One Last Kiss” is an absolute banger.

The Evangelion rebuild movies are a new take on the Evangelion saga. They are visually impressive in their modern presentation, but the CG-heavy fight scenes in these movies are disappointing.

I liked the original NGE series, but I found the "religious techno babble" to be one of the most annoying parts of the show. Despite this, I still enjoyed the original series and EoE because of the characters, animation, fights, music, and psychological introspection. Even though the "religious techno-babble" seemed random and illogical, I eventually convinced myself that it fit in with the show's overarching plot.

However, the Rebuild movies take this "nonsense" to new heights ... and subsequently have illogical plot development and twists. If you were to watch the movies without any knowledge of the show, the plot would be incoherent.

Since the Rebuild movies focus heavily on the "religious techno babble," I couldn't truly enjoy them. The second movie was the most compelling, but the third movie extinguished any excitement I had. The conclusion of the fourth movie felt rushed and left me feeling empty.

The Rebuild movies seem like a cash grab aimed at old-school fans of the series. I cannot recommend these movies to old fans or new viewers because the "religious techno-babble" is magnified, and the movies are incoherent from a plot perspective. Although it was interesting to see where the new retelling of the saga took our beloved characters and to get closure on their stories, the execution of these movies was lacking.
