This is a canonical watch order that is geared towards a first time viewer of Gundam. I myself experienced the series in this order, which preserves the canonical order, but mends it slightly to preserve watching experience and prevent burnout. Included will be double-ups of series, which means the TV and Compilation movie versions and/or OVAs. Most of those "rewatches" will come after a period of time, slid into the timeline in a way that prevents serious burn-out. Realistically you can swap around any of them for their relative compilation, but first will always come the "preferred" version.

There is nothing in this list I would call spoilers, but I do give some slight generalized opinions which may lead, or alter your own experiences. If you want to go in blind, just look at the show. The blurbs are there to decide if you aren't sure when you want to watch something, not to give you anything before you watch.

I will also be forced to keep a side list since the max number of items in a single list is 50. Until more Gundam content is released, it mostly has small 5-10 minute things that don't really add to the canon in anyway. However, Gundam is approaching a point where if 2-3 more series release this list will get tight. Here is a link to that list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/12271

I want to clarify that I am not some super Gundam fan, and I began making this list from the beginning of my watching experience. It thus offers a glimpse into what watching Gundam in 2022 should be like for the open-minded, anime history inclined weeb. If you know nothing (or very little) about Gundam this is the perfect place to start in order to grind out the main Universal Century timeline.

If you have any questions (or suggestions to improve since I'm not a hardcore Gundam fan) please feel free to message me.

Mobile Suit Gundam is probably the most influential anime franchise ever, and contrary to common opinion, it is no a meathead action kids' show full of repetitive robot fights. Gundam is a very flawed but very meaningful work of art, full of thought provoking sociopolitical commentary on war as well as interesting supernatural conceptualization.

The Universal Century Timeline is the original Gundam "universe" conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino, as well as the best Gundam timeline, but sadly it has a bad reputation for being extremely inaccesible due to the myriads of installments it has and the watch order that tends to confuse many with many remakes, alternative versions and branching spin-offs. The series is however easy to watch if you just have a clear order, and this interest stack is an attempt at offering a concise and simple list of the of the most important and best installments so you can watch the best stuff without having to plow through the admittedly abundant trash.

I will include all essential works and add a few ones that are not essential but still highly recommended for either high quality or thematic significance, but I'll make it clear when an installment is not *really* essential and just recommended. My criteria for essential is most of the time being crucial to the timeline or simply so high in quality that it makes no sense to skip it.

If you want a COMPLETE watch order including every installment and go deep down the rabbit hole I recommend the interest stack called "Mobile Suit Gundam: Universal Century Timeline Watchorder" by user giffica, as I found it to be a very thorough and well put together list.

Animeby Watch-Guide

Hi, I'm Oedon And This Is My Secondary Account (Watch-Guide) For Watch Guides!
You Can Spot Me When You See The [W] Mark.
In My Watch Guides I Usually Don't Count Shorts, Recaps, Music Videos etc... Only The Main Show/Films And The Worthy Side Content.
And This Is A Watch Guide For...

----------------------------------- 《 Mobile Suit Gundam 》 ------------------------------------

(About Timelines)

The whole Timelines thing may make the watch guide more complicated than it should be, but it's really simple.
Mobile Suit Gundam started like any other anime, a season then a sequel and some side content here and there, but the fans wanted more and they did get more, more season that is set in Different Timelines!
All what you need to know is the original Mobile Suit Gundam and it's sequel and side content (and later a Prequel) is set in the "Universal Century Timeline" (UC) for short.
and everything else is set in it's own Timeline that is not worth remembering the name of.
So the question is not "what Timeline is this?" It's "is this in the Universal Century Timeline?"

(About Anime)

The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise Contains 25 different anime

1.(Mobile Suit Gundam) The Original Gundam (UC)

2.(War in the Pocket) Standalone OVA (UC)

3.(Gundam F91) Standalone Film (UC)

24.(Requiem For Vengeance) Standalone CG Film (UC)

25.(GQuuuuuuX) Standalone Anime (Alternate UC)

Each of which tell a self contained story, so you start from or skip any.

I gave myself the authority to Not include the Builder (Pokémon but Gundam) And SD (Chibi Gundam) Entries for obvious reasons.

This is how it works 👇🏼

"Name of the Timeline" - the Year it takes place in

The Universal Century (UC) is the original continuity in the Gundam multiverse (yes, it's a multiverse). This is for all those people that doesn't know how to start because of the BIG amount of titles.
Sorry if there is a grammar mistake, my writing in english is not the best.

This is a collection of seinen anime that often caters to more mature audiences that value anime as a serious, more cinematic and "highbrow" artform. These are anime series and movies that film aficionados and non-anime fans can also appreciate due to their artistry and quality.

These series are often experimental, cinematic, viscerally emotional and artistically impressive- often ignoring commercial pressures and pop culture trends, instead being driven by a passion for artistry and storytelling.

These series often have themes related to existentialism, mystery, conspiracy, psychology, and literature, and sometimes can feel more like arthouse films in their creative and unique animation and directorial styles.

Some of these series are extremely popular, while many are sadly overlooked and obscure. Some of these series are mature in an intellectual, more academic definition, while others are simply "mature" due to their use of gore and violence to shock or differentiate themselves from more commercial, easily digestible anime.

In general, though, these are series that feel like honest, uncynical works that come from the creators heart, filling in a much needed niche that caters to older fans, while also feeling refreshingly artistic and unique.

Series and Films will only feature the FIRST entry in the series, out of brevity and so this list will not exceed the 50 series entry limit.

This series are also not in any real order, and for some series, I've written some pretty lengthy writeups. For some, I did not write a word, likely because the show is ubiquitously known or appreciated, and other times because I simply did not have anything meaningful to add that has not been already said.

Mecha anime released in the 2020s.

Introduction:
Mecha is a genre that has evolved significantly since its humble origins, yet it is also a genre which never neglects to pay homage to the artistic designs and traditions of the early pioneers of the genre. To this day, bipedal Mech designs are still a major characteristic aspect of the genre, and familiar thematic elements continue to be shared across many, many franchises. Underdog pilots with native abilities, violent conflicts in space brought about by environmental crisis' on Earth, and many other common themes are still major plot points which define the entire genre to this day.

While spiritual, magical, and supernatural elements slowly made their way into the more hard-science elements of the Mecha genres' traditionally "sci-fi" origins, it is still largely a genre which relies on a more grounded, gritty, and cinematic approach to storytelling- especially when compared to most other anime genres. Mecha is a genre which continues to survive through a furiously loyal and niche fanbase, and, despite frequent lulls in the genre's popularity, mecha always seems to claw its way back into the anime zeitgeist.

List Information:
Here is my list of the most artistically gorgeous, experimental, profound, timeless, and well-written Mecha anime that the last 38 years has had to offer.

This list is NOT in any particular ranked order, however, I did try to put the franchises in chronological order.

These are extremely good, high quality mecha anime picked across 5 decades of the medium you can get emotionally invested in, creating a genuine level of immersion to their masterful work. They are meaningful, real life influencing works, with themes that serve as important life lessons, with characters so connectable they might as well be real people, with fully realized concepts and fantasies, with stories worth the gravitas and seriousness they demand. While they might be on different levels in the immersion scale, they're all pieces of art that with their good animation, writing, directing, sound direction, art direction, and theming are well worth a watch even for non-mecha fans.
