Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

The rare and inexplicable Puberty Syndrome is thought of as a myth. It is a rare disease which only affects teenagers, and its symptoms are so supernatural that hardly anyone recognizes it as a legitimate occurrence. However, high school student Sakuta Azusagawa knows from personal experience that it is very much real, and happens to be quite prevalent in his school.

Mai Sakurajima is a third-year high school student who gained fame in her youth as a child actress, but recently halted her promising career for reasons unknown to the public. With an air of unapproachability, she is well known throughout the school, but none dare interact with her—that is until Sakuta sees her wandering the library in a bunny girl costume. Despite the getup, no one seems to notice her, and after confronting her, he realizes that she is another victim of Puberty Syndrome. As Sakuta tries to help Mai through her predicament, his actions bring him into contact with more girls afflicted with the elusive disease.

I became completely immersed in the storyline, the characters, and their emotions, enjoying every Saturday of Season 2 as if it were a part of my life.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is an anime that masterfully focuses on Puberty Syndrome, expressing these adolescent crises hyperbolically. If you have personally experienced or closely observed such feelings, the anime will dive deep into your heart and establish a strong connection.
For me, I strongly connected with the feelings of:
* Wanting to disappear from the world.
* Relentlessly trying to keep up with social trends.
* Developing different personalities (especially on social media).
* Changing ... oneself under the pressure of the surrounding environment.
The anime has a deliberately slow pace (which some mainstream fans might find boring), as not much seems to happen in a single episode. It is full of dialogue, but if you are truly connected, these conversations become your luxury enjoyment, especially the humor. Then there is, of course, Mai-san, whose understanding of Sakuta is so profound he rarely needs to use words to express himself.
However, the main realization that struck me is that the anime is concluding; the story is heading toward its finale, with the last movie scheduled for 2026. This poignant feeling—what people call Post-Anime Depression—is what I’m suffering from right now. I have thought about Bunny Girl Senpai all day, and I feel a cold ❄️ sensation in my heart, as if someone is leaving, or rather, as if I will no longer be a part of that world, experiencing their struggles and their daily life activities 😭. This feeling is hard to counter, and though people tell me to start a new journey (a new anime), these characters keep coming back to mind.
For example, I imagine:
* Sakuta will graduate from university and work as a teacher, guiding his students through their own Puberty Syndromes 😆, or perhaps telling them how he managed to win over the most beautiful girl in Japan without a phone or proper sleep 🙇.
* I’m sure Mai-san will call him, asking if he’s seen any helpless bunny girls or mini-skirt Santas roaming the school halls.
* I hope Kaede is doing great in her life, maybe with the entire Azusagawa family visiting the zoo together this time.
* I hope Futaba finds a good partner, and every other girl is doing well in their lives.
All these thoughts create a bittersweet, poignant feeling of "Can I be here forever?" 🤝

* Re:Zero (Isekai, re-loop)
I believe they share some thematic resemblance and are highly recommended.

Mixed Feelings

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai feels special the moment you dive in. The chemistry between Sakuta and Mai is sharp, funny, and surprisingly tender. It’s the kind of banter that makes you want to stick around just to hear what they’ll say next. On the technical side, the visuals and animation are clean and fitting, but never the show’s main strength. The real atmosphere comes from its music and voice acting. The opening and ending themes linger in your head. The performances of Sakuta and Mai give the dialogue its sharp edge and warmth. The whole idea of “Adolescence Syndrome” as a ... metaphor for teenage struggles is clever too. It gives weight to what could’ve been just another romance and makes you think about how invisible or misunderstood people can feel. It’s playful on the surface, but deeper than it looks. But if I’m honest, it doesn’t always keep that same magic all the way through. The first arc is easily the strongest, and some of the later arcs lose that same emotional punch, they’re interesting, just not as impactful. The biggest catch is that Adolescence Syndrome, while thematically smart, is never really explained in a consistent way. Each arc uses it differently, sometimes symbolic, sometimes bending reality without clear rules, which makes it more of a metaphorical device than a fleshed-out concept. Sometimes the show talks a bit too much instead of letting the emotions breathe, like it wants to make sure you “get it” rather than trust you to feel it. It’s not enough to ruin the ride, though, and the sincerity of its message still comes through. Even with those bumps, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai sticks with you and hard to forget. Not so much for flashy visuals or rewatch-heavy plotting, but partly for the clever writing and mostly because of how genuine the relationships feel.

I didn’t enjoy this anime.

I watched it from start to finish, and honestly, it just didn’t work for me. While the first two episodes are intriguing and immersive — the plot pulls you in — everything after that starts to feel strange and disconnected. The story becomes increasingly bizarre, and the characters show little to no development.

Romance? Not really. The relationship between the main character and Mai doesn’t go anywhere, his bond with his sister stays the same, and the side characters barely evolve. Suddenly, the anime starts mixing paranormal events with pseudo-scientific explanations that just don’t land.

In the end, it feels like nothing actually ... changed — a story was told, but we’re left exactly where we started.
