Both are sports anime with focus on japanese games, and they share a similar vibe. 

One girl Two boys, one of the boys is away after making a huge impact on her, while the other is around supporting her dreams, the girl is dense yet cheerful and lovable. Both of the series have a competitive side to them, though in different majors, and the setting and the timeline are in high school. 

Both anime are centered around students in a specific Japanese style school club (Karuta and Koto) and both start feeling like "real" romance anime from these seasons onward. The various connections between characters start to get deeper and the story slips somewhat into the background and relationships come forth.
