A disappointing anime is often more upsetting than a bad one. When an acclaimed series receives a movie and other additional material, it's natural to hold high expectations and hope for an experience at least equal to the original. At times brilliant and more often monotonous, the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie is one that unfortunately falls short of these expectations.

Set after the first season, Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie takes Sakura to an entirely new environment: Hong Kong. After winning a five-day trip at a local store, Sakura is given the opportunity to travel to a different country for the first time in her life. ...

This is an OK movie, but strangely focuses more on the action than the characters. There is SOME character development, but it's saved for the end. The majority of this movie is spent either running away from, or fighting, the antagonist.
The art, as usual for a CLAMP adaption, is gorgeous. But the dub is AWFUL, and changes the dialogue around completely. Avoid it at all costs.

Could not tell you why some people are disappointed in this movie. It's just like any of the better episodes of the series, but longer and with superior animation. You get to see Sakura being cute in a variety of costumes, as well as her early-series blushing over Yukito all the time and getting bullied by her onii-chan. To top it off, it has that sweet Cardcaptor Sakura flavor where even the antagonist's motives aren't necessarily as evil as they may seem at first, and leaves you feeling warm. I wouldn't ask for anything more.

One of my favorite things about this movie was story expansion ...

Quite a while ago I reviewed Cardcaptor Sakura, a magical girl series from Clamp and Madhouse. It was a good anime, albeit not one of the best magical girl series I've looked at. The series has gotten two films. Let's look at the first, made in 1999 and written by Clamp's Ohkawa Nanase.

Story:

Our tale opens with Sakura capturing the Arrow card with Syaoran's help, some sidelines commentary from Meiling and Tomoyo filming her the whole time. She and Tomoyo stop by a store to buy school supplies and Sakura wins tickets to Hong Kong through the shopping district's lottery. Kero questions this because she's “weak ...

It was an okay movie I guess. It was a 5/10 or 6/10 movie, though I'm leaning more towards 5/10. This movie isn't really necessary to watch imo. Though it wasn't bad, so meh. It mentions a few lore specifics, but doesn't really expand it much. I guess to show people who used to date? Though this movie revealing past lovers doesn't really add much to it. It feels more so like a cash grab, than something that expands the world and is necessary. I think I get where it might tie into the next arc with ...

I recognize that this is basically just an anime-original episode of the show, and if it was literally an anime-original episode, I may not have minded it. There were plenty of individual episodes that were a bit weak compared to the others, but the big difference is that they were only 20 minutes long and usually at least implied some progression. The first Cardcaptor Sakura movie is a waste of time that lasts for a long 90 minutes.

It's about Sakura winning a trip to Hong Kong during the winter break of her first year as a Cardcaptor. This was a horrible idea, possibly the worst ...

When I found out about this anime I was really excited about it. When I found out there were movies too, I got even more excited. So I started watching the anime and it did not disappoint me, in fact; it probably is one of my favorite animes.

Yet the movie did disappoint me. A little bit, though, I still thought it was a good movie but it just didn't quite reach the anime-awesomeness.

So you should watch the movie after the first season and before the second season. It follows Sakura on her trip to Hong Kong, where she finds out it wasn't a coincidence that ...

Does its job...good job!

Footnote:

"Cardcaptor Sakura Movie"....your mileage will vary according to how excited those three words make you. Which is not to say that this is "bad" or even underwhelming, but it is exactly what it says on the box: A feature length episode of the anime with a little extra polish.

If you hate the idea, you'll hate the movie. But if you're up for 90 minutes of a clumsy magical girl hanging out in Hong Kong, getting into spats with her brother, and fighting an ancient ghost lady, this is a good time.

A lot of shows aimed at kids are cynically made and low-quality ...

Honestly, had the whole series of Cardcaptor Sakura been like this movie, I probably would've given it a higher rating. (I rated the 70-episode series a 2 whereas this movie gets a pretty solid 6.)

There are some strengths that this movie plays to such as foreshadowing, action, creative uses of locations, and of course, the magic. Romance elements present in the show are downplayed or absent, which honestly, suits me better since CLAMP tends to be all over the place with irrelevant romance plots that make the series drag too long. The tone overall ends up being darker and more involved than that of the ...

The first movie of the *Cardcaptor Sakura* series follows the titular heroine winning a trip to Hong Kong. What seemed to be a fun vacation with her loved ones ended up turning into a dangerous adventure, after Sakura realizes that she’s been lured into a trap made by a vengeful spirit.

While I have been a *Cardcaptor Sakura* fan since childhood, I’ve actually never consumed much of the series (both anime and manga) in its original language. (I grew up watching the English-dubbed version on Kids’ WB). Of course, when I saw that this was available to watch in English sub on Crunchyroll, I wanted to ...

I enjoy the "Cardcaptor Sakura" anime series and a number of CLAMP's other works. I'm used to filler OVAs, even from mahou shojo films, even from the 90s, so my bar wasn't set that high. That this movie still dropped lower than that is... rather depressing.

In the typical vein of OVAs that are supposed to fill time between manga publication/development of main series plots/keep up hype for the series without directly affecting the main series plot, this film... has little to nothing to do with the plot of the series itself, so the plot doesn't really matter and feels... empty of tension. The end result ...

I made the mistake of watching this movie after I finished the series - do not make the same mistake! This movie is set in the middle of the series.

That said, it's also not...necessarily necessary. There's a tiny bit of character development towards the end, but it was lost on me having already seen the end of the series. I imagine the movie would've been a lot better if I'd seen it in chronological order.

Overall, it wasn't bad. But it wasn't good either. If you want a good film and you've already finished the series, skip straight to the second movie. That one ...
