(NOTE: This is actually a review of both season 1 and the movie. I scored 8 for season 1 and 10 for the movie.)

Anime Review: The Saga of Tanya the Evil

This is one of the shows that I did not expect to like at first, especially I'm not into military, history, and political stuff, and their terms used is a little bit foreign to me. I wasn't very hooked at the beginning and that's probably because of my interest. But when I continued watching, it's getting way better than what I expected. I love the personality of Tanya and how it was low key developed ... throughout the season and the movie. At first, she wouldn't even care about life and death itself (except hers). But when the story progresses (especially in the movie), she became a considerate leader. However, she still prioritizes her freedom and well-being and she's looking for a way to get out of the bloody situation, which is true to human nature. For me, the first season is like a long introduction and its last episode is truly the beginning. The movie is a masterpiece! It is very well-directed and the phasing is perfect. I love the symbolism they've used like the cliffhanger ending where the cards were shown and it actually means a lot depending on the viewers' interpretation. The action and animation is splendid. There are a lot of things happening in one frame that is perfectly portraying the intensity of war. Props to the voice actors, they gave more life and emotions to these characters. Lastly, the lesson to ponder in this story is deep and it significantly show how complex our emotions are. Emotions can lead us to any possible actions, no matter how good or bad the decision is. I guess when you think of the word "monstrous", it's the humanity itself, and we're not even guilty of it.

Youjo Senki Movie picks off right where the anime series left off, and it's every bit as good, and in many ways even better than before.

If you haven't watched the anime, go do so now. I won't repeat my review in depth, but let's just say that production values have been cranked up even further, the solid story and characters remain, leading to an amazing visual and storytelling spectacle.

If military and magic anime is your thing, you MUST give this a watch.

Like seriously, it's good. Story is a direct continuation from the anime, the art and sound are absolutely mindblowing yet again, and the ... main character continues to impress with every scene.

I am not good at making reviews. I don't even think what I make here is even worth being called a reviews, but I would just going to say a thing that been bothering me.

And yes, I aware that what I am going to say is probably already written carefully by the author to be just like what happened, but I simply can't just not tell about this thing.

The thing is Youjo Senki is always been one of the anime that got me hooked up to be watching anime since it is a part of the Isekai Quartet that you want it or not has ... to know what the plot behind every show there. This anime is no exception, the art is very unique (honestly never seen any art style like this), the story is good considering actual History and Fantasy barely get better when performed at the same time, but again this anime is the exception.

Anyway enough talking, I wouldn't consider this a spoiler but I would try my best to not tell the literal story in this movie. In my opinion, the so called "antagonist" here is no cap the most dummy personality I ever seen. Not even on anime but also real life. I just can't stand how the think is just too selfish to begin with. You probably would know when you watch the movie here, but seriously I can't stand the character. Like okay sure your family member died in a war, then what you gonna do? Go on a revenge to seek the fallen family there? Okay that's good and all but do it reallly think it's the best way you could do it when all of the same family member that suffer the same problem didn't do it.

Okay my english is bad right now, probably sound like a lunatic but you will get the point when you watch this movie.

All and all, a good show. Recommended to watch

The youjo senki movie gave me the feeling of being excited which I've never felt in a long time. I won't waste your time so let's start the review.

The story is what would you expect for a movie fast paced but it is truly done well and the relationship between being x and tanya really showed how either of them really hate each other for example the last battle of tanya and Mary sue. Wish it had more character development for Mary sue but I guess you can't fit all that in the movie.

The art was amazing near perfect with the landscapes and ... the amazing art in the end. I have a problem with some of the cgi which resulted me in giving this movie a 9 during the fight scenes the humans are badly animated but only for a short while either than that everything about the art is amazing with all the explosions and magic.

The sound is great I love how they put back the music from the old one but I know some people don't like reusing some music but I think it fits with the whole movie giving you back the feels either way great soundtracks. Also the laser sounds was cool really felt like it's used in the godzilla movie.

The characters in the show was amazing didn't feel much about the side characters though the soldiers were basically just drinking and blowing people's heads off. But I think this is where Mary Sue shines it showed the anger of her father being killed by tanya especially in the last scenes and how much she cared for him but I still blame being x for that:/ also Tanya will always be a good character.

Enjoyment 100% especially in the fight scenes where you're just at the edge of your seats also it made me think alot about what the psychological things Tanya said.

Overall really amazing show even on a budget hope it gets more recognition since it's well known for fans but not to mainstream audience. Can't wait for season 2. Hope this helped you watch the movie!

Youjo Senki Movie (2019)

Another instalment for the series in the form of a movie this time.

Tanya doesn't ever seem to get a break going from one front to next no matter how blissfully she thinks her plans are going.

The story is, as usual, more or less the same except the Federation are shown as the main Antagonist. The similar show of historical familiarity is amazing. You see this as you watch it.

Art is great as before and runs with maybe a slightly more polished look. The magic being show especially Tanya with her prayers are amazing as usual. Mary and her magic ... and the looks in her eyes of rage are of incredible detail also.

The sound you would expect is insane. The SFX they used here is absolutely perfect and I love shows that take proper note of the available sound sets. Voices are also very strong and passionate.

Characters throughout keep the demeanour expected. Tanya's side hasn't really changed and the side of Mary is just her replaced as the character the dad was. It is not a slight as the characters are superb and Mary is actually a better character.

The movie was amazing and super enjoyable.

Overall I actually prefered the main series for the complexity and more involvement of being X directly. The movie is still a solid 9.99 just not quite a 10 for me as with the main show.

Around this point I feel story should've been going somewhere. Some hero's journey stuff or whatever else is out there. Instead I keep seeing the same thing. Our guys who are competent, rational, amazing vs their guys who are incompetent, stupid and depraved. And then lots of spectacle. By the way I love spectacle. Im not saying it's shallow or anything. That's what's good about the film. The bad is the lack of substance. Even the main character is still devoid of it. Basically the same character from episode 1. I think it's safe to say there are no character arcs going on. Im sorry, ... but beautiful animation is wasted on this story.

I have to say that I was very excited for the premiere of the second season, having enjoyed the first one very much. However, while this second installment has some interesting things, it didn't manage to keep me as hooked as the first one did.

I really liked the magic system presented in the series, and the way it's used to give more depth and complexity to the plot. Additionally, Anya is presented as an impeccable protagonist, and her presence in the series is definitely one of the strongest points.

However, compared to the first season, I felt that the story in the second installment was a ... bit confusing and didn't have the same clear direction. Additionally, while the humor in the series was very good, at times it felt a bit forced.

Despite this, if you enjoyed the first season and like the isekai genre, I would definitely recommend giving this second installment a chance. The magic system is interesting, and there are some action and development moments that are worth it. Overall, I would give it a 6/10.


Debo decir que estaba muy emocionado por el estreno de la segunda temporada, después de haber disfrutado mucho de la primera. Sin embargo, aunque esta segunda entrega tiene algunas cosas interesantes, no logró mantenerme tan enganchado como lo hizo la primera.

Me gustó mucho el sistema de magia que se presenta en la serie, y la manera en que se utiliza para darle más profundidad y complejidad a la trama. Además, Anya se presenta como una protagonista impecable, y su presencia en la serie es definitivamente uno de los puntos más fuertes.

Sin embargo, en comparación con la primera temporada, sentí que la historia de la segunda entrega era un poco confusa y no tenía la misma dirección clara. Además, aunque el humor en la serie me pareció muy bueno, en algunos momentos llegaba a ser un poco forzado.

A pesar de esto, si disfrutaste de la primera temporada y te gusta el género isekai, definitivamente recomendaría darle una oportunidad a esta segunda entrega. El sistema de magia es interesante y hay algunos momentos de acción y desarrollo que valen la pena. En general, le daría un 6/10

Every asked yourself "Was this anime made for me?" is how in my opinion i would describe Youjo Senki Movie. Not everyone can enjoy this as it caters to mainly a specific audience.

The story is nothing unique but interesting to watch. The art is good for a movies standard but great compared to its first season. Loved the soundtrack it fit the movie like a glove and the sound effects were very enjoyable.

Character wise it's just a standard hero vs anti-hero. The anti-hero has amazing plot armor (ironically named Mary sue) not dying when she got shot through the chest ... three times which is my only complaint.

Enjoyed it very much and give makes me happy that they included some historical references. 9/10

This is how you properly use the budget of a movie to enhance animation, art, and sound. I cannot stress enough how much the sound in particular enhanced all of the action scenes. This movie is a much watch with high-quality headphones or a surround-sound system.

Animation wise the fights are spectacular and exciting. Later in the film, when they face the federation, CGI is utilized properly to create a massive horde of men that really creates a sense of dread. The stakes are raised and the sounds of war really cements a feeling of dread in the latter portion of the film.

Unfortunately, the movie is ... not a contained piece. It acts as a bridge between the first and eventual second season. This holds it back in the story department in my opinion. Despite the antagonist, Mary Sue, having an excellent vocal performance and expressive animation-- her characterization suffers from being introduced in a movie.

I feel this movie will stand as a much better work once season 2 is introduced. Right now it just has me itching for more. I wont go into spoiler territory, but the ending of the film and opening scene are implying some BIG moments in the future of this franchise.

In summation:

Story 7/10 - Acts as more of a bridge rather than a contained work. It is more so a tease of what's to come.

Art 9/10 - Amazing and expressive animation. CGI is utilized properly, although is still somewhat detracting. (CGI still has that effect on me)

Sound 10/10 - The best use of sound I have heard in an anime period.

Character 7/10 - Side-characters are expressive and fun-- but somewhat unremarkable. Tanya is given more emotional depth and an undying hatred of communism that is hilarious. Mary Sue has potential and needs more than just a movie.

Enjoyment 10/10 - The battles are what gave me the greatest enjoyment and pleasure from viewing this. I have to give it a perfect score for enjoyment or else I would be lying to myself. Their was an audible cheer in the theater during a 'special' moment towards the end of the film when Mary Sue and Tanya have an intimate exchange in a church. Outstanding moments.

Overall 8/10 - Held back by its bridging nature rather than being a standalone story. I feel if we ever get a conclusion film following a future final season-- something like "The End of Tanya the Evil" it could easily be a 10/10. Only time will tell though.

I'd like to preface this review by saying that Youjo Senki anime series is probably the show I enjoyed the most in more than 10 years of watching. It's one of the few shows that I gave a 10/10 alongside Rakugo and HxH, but I gave this movie only an 8.

The stuff I enjoyed first before I rant. It was an interesting take to have an actual Mary Sue to be the main antagonist named "Mary Sioux". She even has the revenge backstory and the ancient "I suck at practice but I kick ass at the real battlefield" trope that mainstream shounen protagonists used to ... have. Our main gal Tanya now looks like the generic anime villain she has to defeat in order to "save the world from evil". It's the believer of blind faith against the chosen man that detests His presence.

However, I noticed that there were parts that the quality didn't look like it was a theatrical release, but rather a weekly show struggling by its schedule. I expected less use of 3D models for mob characters for the movie, but alas, only certain fight scenes had that 2D sakuga feel. Without going into spoilers, the church punching scene against Mary was the one I felt the most lacking.

I praise the amazing pacing of the anime series where 24 minutes felt like an hour's worth of entertainment. It had an amazing balance of fast-paced action and toned-down character scenes, which made us like Tanya even more as the protagonist fighting against fate. This movie, however, felt like they omitted those character scenes to fit all the information in the span of 2 hours. This statement might rustle some jimmies, but I had this nagging thought in my brain while watching mid-way through the movie: "Am I watching a recap episode of a series like what they did in Episode 6.5?". I wish this was made as a half-cour season 2 instead where the similar type of pacing in the first season was used.

In the midst of writing my review for this movie, I accidently refreshed the page, losing all my content. So, a digest review, I guess:

Art is just a lot better. You can tell there's more love and detail put into the movie compared to the anime. Tanya and the other characters look way better when moving their mouths, expressing emotion, and even just overall feel of the characters feels smoother. In the few battle sequences there were, it felt a lot more impactful. There was the impact of an aerial fight that was not there in the first season. Backgrounds look spectacular still, and it ... just goes to show how backgrounds matter in battle choreography when fights are shown in aerial urban combat. It felt like the characters were actually flying through the environment, and not jarring. This was more about the 3d backgrounds, which looked way better than the anime. Explosions look a lot more detailed and realistic rather than copy pasted. However, there are really just only a few battles, and despite them being quite well made, a lot of the movie does not really have any battle sequences. Sure, the highlight of the movie was probably the initial battle sequence at Teigenhoff of Mary and Tanya, but even then, that 10 second or so sequence was still worse than Levi's escape in Attack on Titan. It's lower quality, and it's also a lot shorter. For a movie with a movie budget, you'd think that the movie would have much more battles in quantity and quality. I don't know the budget since it's not publicly shown, but I imagine it had at least the budget of the first season of the show. So over double the budget the team had for the anime, since only 1:40 of content needed to be shown rather than 4 hours.
I railed pacing in the anime for the first season. It's a lot better, despite there still being no real monologuing from Tanya. That being said, it does slow down considerably in the material it decides to adapt. The movie really only shows two major battles. Despite that, the movie also covers A LOT of material. How come? Well, the movie just removes a lot of the source material and skips it, while also retconning a lot of events and making it a lot different from the novel/manga. That being said, it's a much better alternative to the first season of the anime, which both skipped a lot of content and rushed through the few battles that it did adapt. In the material that the movie decides to adapt, I give it a thumbs up. A lot of things get skipped, but honestly, it's a decent retconning job. Mary Sue is also a lot more OP and in the movie, she's portrayed as much more of a threat and rival to Tanya than expected. But man, Teigenhoff is basically completely changed.
Again, I'd like to re-iterate that the scenes that are shown in the anime are well paced for what they are. Added with the better animation and art, I'll bump up the movie and only the movie's rating to a 7. It's decent for what it is.

I really struggled with how to score the Youjo Senki Movie. Youjo Senki is one of the finest and most unique Isekai in the genre, but that makes a disappointing adaptation all the more painful. It’s really hard to pinpoint exactly where everything didn’t hit for me, and I feel bad saying it’s mostly in the animation but that’s really most of it. It’s safe to say that if you like Youjo Senki and don’t have a discerning eye then you will probably get a ... lot more out of this film than I did.

The greatest strength of the original series was by far the sound design, and that holds true here. Meaty thwacks, cracking bones, gunfire, and explosions are all excellently rendered. I highly recommend watching the original anime and this movie with a nice surround sound system for so audio porn.

The movie continues to execute the premise of the series very well. I remember when the anime aired my initial impressions were that this series was going to be edgy tragedy porn like modern magical girl anime, but to my surprise the series takes its isekai startup and elevates it to a much more standard military anime.

Unfortunately, the story of the movie felt pretty weak. Picking up where the first season left off the movie dives into the Mary Sue arc where god has ordained another with their divinity to further test Tanya. I have yet to watch it but I believe the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie did this same approach. Following up a season with a film of the next arc is a pretty clever way to keep the ball rolling on the story while getting funding for that second course. Demon Slayer just judging by the trailer seems actually cover the entire arc in its movie where the Youjo Senki Movie does not. The film ends very lukewarm and while I don’t have much to complain about in the way of the actual structure of the movie an ending with no actual conflict resolution feels pretty lame.

Studio Nut is a relative newcomer, but they should definitely be disappointed in themselves. Another title has now entered in the list of “movies that look worse than their neighboring material”. The Youjo Senki anime had some abysmal animation I won’t deny that. Stiff 3d model soldiers falling over like chess pieces with stock looking explosion animations in the foreground is something I won’t defend. What the original anime did right, however is that it went all out where it counted. The conflicts and dogfights between mages were what was important in the series and the anime season clearly spent most of its budget on those scenes as well as the expressive unique facial animation of the main characters. The movie on the other hand constantly berates you with 2d over 3d assets that really is distracting. It may seem like a little thing, but when you can clearly see that the urban background characters are flying by are cheap 3d models you can be pulled out of a scene. Instead of thinking “this is hype!” what comes to mind is “this looks really bad” and you never want that to be in your viewers minds during a climactic battle scene.

I like Youjo Senki. I like it a lot. I would even say I generally enjoyed this movie. I was just fairly disappointed with the amount of story that was covered with this film as well as the lackluster animation. Studio ufotable tricked everyone with Kimestu no Yaiba’s animation by really putting their all into most of the important scene’s that viewers would remember, relying on those moments to carry the lackluster animation found in the rest of the show. Studio Nut failed to do this and instead produced something I would compare to the “Dragon Ball Super Movie: Broly” that had awful 1st person perspective with bad looking CG lava in its main feature. If a studio doesn’t have the resources to produce something visually impressive or at the very least cannot present what’s important as best they can then I would rather have a work never be adapted to film, and that’s a terrible feeling to have about a property you love.

I like to keep things short, so here's my take. Btw you shouldn't watch this movie if you haven't already watched the prequel yet.

- The story picks up right after the end of the anime series, nothing much has changed besides the settings so there's not much to discuss about without going into spoiler territory.

- Animation didn't lose it's touch and the fight scenes are great, so you don't gotta worry about quality.

There may be light spoiler here.
- Now character, heres the thing that brought my overall score that could've been an 8 or 9 to a 7. The movie introduces Mary Sioux, that ... has now joined the army in order to avenge her father. What made me hate the character with a passion is that she is literally the incarnation of a cliche. Her plot armor incomprehensibly thick which was incredibly annoying. Her rash decision only lead to the deaths of her comrades yet she blames her incompetence at the Empire and Tanya as an excuse. I continuously question her actions and thought whenever the film focuses on her.

Conclusion: I enjoyed the film, if you like the 1st season you should definitely watch it, but the newly introduced anti hero is incredibly annoying. It's not as if she's meant to be liked, but at least try to make some sense.

tl;dr: More of the same with some changes to spice things up while also being better made.

If you’ve already seen the main series, as is very much a requirement before watching this film, then there’s not much to talk about this film other than that it’s simply a solid continuation of the anime that plays to the same strengths, in that it entirely about an evil overpowered loli being a badass in a variety of ways.

The narrative changes things up in a number of ways so that things don’t start getting repetitive and played out. The main one would be that the enemy is now ... the Russy Federation which changes things up in terms of the political and strategic sense and also allows the script to have a lot of fun talking trash about commies. But just as important is the proper introduction of a rival for Tanya, another Mary Sue type character literally named Mary Sioux, whose purpose seems to be to make Tanya seem even more overpowered and badass by showing she doesn’t just crush the average trash, but can thrash other overpowered characters as well.

That combined with how the film feels better made than the main series in that it has better pacing in terms of what really matters, moments of Tanya being badass, as well in that it has better production values which results in the action being more exciting and the edgy monologues seem cooler, results in this film edging out the main series as somewhat better.

As a final note, I liked how it just randomly threw in the great ED of the main series with new visuals just for the hell of it. This was then followed after a bit by the credits actually rolling as white text on black background as is the standard for films along with a song that was decent enough but didn’t match anywhere near as well as the OP and ED of the main series did.

I love Youjo Senki so much that the main original series got an 8 from me. It's great that we got a movie but it's not enough. I want a full adaptation on Tanya's revenge quest against Being X and I won't be satisfied until it happens.


Animation: it's incredibly inconsistent throughout. Some action scenes get the fluid animation treatment, others get the stiff animation treatment. Some action scenes are incredibly fast-paced, others slow down randomly. It's a mess.


Sound: the sound design of this movie is insane. It's not perfect but it was really close to that.


Story and characters:
1) SPOILER: I think ... Tanya should've able to kill Mary.
2) SPOILER: I wanted to see a "physical" appearance of Being X.


All things considered, it's still Youjo Senki. We get a badass maniac of a loli, an alternate universe of the World History, war and mecha-magic-old school-weaponry. It gets a 7/10 from me and I can't wait until we get a new season of Tanya and her violent adventures.
