Synopsis

Abandoned as a child by her mother, Aoi Tsubaki has always had the ability to see "ayakashi"—spirits from the Hidden Realm. Shirou Tsubaki, her grandfather who shared the same ability, took her under his wing and taught her how to live with the ayakashi in peace. When her grandfather abruptly passes away, the independent Aoi must continue her college career, armed with only her knowledge in cooking as a means of protection against the human-eating spirits. In hopes that the ayakashi will not turn to her or other unknowing humans as a tasty meal, she takes it upon herself to feed the hungry creatures that cross her path.

After giving a mysterious ayakashi her lunch, Aoi is transported to the Hidden Realm, where the ayakashi reveals himself to be an ogre-god known as Oodanna, the "Master Innkeeper." There, she learns that she was used as collateral for her grandfather's debt of one hundred million yen, and that she must pay the price for her grandfather's careless decision by marrying Oodanna. Aoi valiantly refuses and decides to settle things on her own terms: she will pay off the debt herself by opening an eatery at Oodanna's inn.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi follows the journey of Aoi as she proceeds to change and touch the lives of the ayakashi through the one weapon she has against them—her delicious cooking.

This was such a refreshing watch! It's rare to see anime related to mythical creatures and beliefs, most especially ones seen in Japan or other asian countries. I don't know why this anime isn't more known!

At first, I was a bit skeptical with the plot and the animation. A girl suddenly gets brought to the world of ayakashi and is told she is to marry the ogre lord. So much happened at first and it felt so random, but I like how as the episodes came by, things started to make more sense. You can tell that the animators did not do any shortcuts and ...

Into food porn? We've got the show for you!

The artwork all the way around is nondescript. It's not horrible but a touch below average overall. Backgrounds are meh at best. Animation is like the artwork. There's a lot worse out there, but nothing really is praiseworthy.

There's lot's of supernatural characters, but frankly, no one gets much development. They might as well just have been human. Our MC does little throughout the season, but cook, and get into trouble where she has to be rescued. The rest of the cast is just as 2 dimensional. No one is annoying, but then no one is intriguing ...

So boring I almost cried. I knew from the start that the art style was going to be dodgy at best, but nothing truly prepared me for the sheer level of flatness the color scheme was. I kept this on purely as background noise when I went about my business. I'll give it one thing: the plot (as generic and a rip off of Kamisama Kiss as it is) was at least easy enough to follow that I didn't need to pay virtually any attention to it and I still understood perfectly what was going on. The English dub performances were so confusingly bad I ...

The Seasonal Quarterly: Spring 2018 (Part 2)

Although it still feels like it only just started, we are now somehow halfway through the Spring 2018 anime season already, and trends are now clearly starting to emerge. In the past three weeks, Boku no Hero Academia returns to prominence, Persona 5 sinks like a stone and more.
