The story is set in the distant future. The land is ruined, and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the "birdcage." Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyouryuu, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence.
A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as "Zero Two" appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head.
I've never watch an anime with mechs on them though I heard them and see some but never actually watch it. This will be the first one, and as I can say, its the best one. Though it might change as episodes progress but I hope not.
So for the story, well, its great though the way they control the mechs will be much better if they just rely on batteries xD. The story focus on their so called Parasites which are pilots of the mechs. They think that their whole life was depend on piloting a mech even though theres alot of things worth your
life, well thats what the anime tells me, it differ to person to person.
For the art, its actually good. The quality really suit the modern age. Even they still using keypads on their phones. The animation is smooth, the animation is great as the art style it self.
For the sound, well I can say its plain but its still good for my ears. There wasn't that much battle scene yet in the anime so I can't really say if it needs to change its music when action scene took place.
Characters in this anime was relatable. And the MC is the one I can relate to. Other characters are also memorable, as I meet different person with the same characteristic as this supporting characters.
For the enjoyment, well, its really fun to watch. Most of the scene I watch are very fun mostly because on how they control their mechs and how they talk about on riding them.
Overall, this anime has potential. I recommend watching it. I just don't get it why they don't put Romance on the genre.
Aside for the unnecessary way to control the Robots, Darling in the franxx has a good premise to become one of the next big thing in anime
Story 8 I Art 9 I Sound 8 I Character 9 I Enjoyment 10 I Overall: 9
Story: Last Week: 7 Now: 8
In just 5 episodes darling in the franxx has introduced to us a post apocalyptic world, where humans try to survive by establishing a mobile fort city, then we are introduced to the Klaxosaurus which is the main reason
why humanity was destroyed, so now humans depend on the Franxx, which are human like robots, that need two pilots a young boy and a girl (Evangelion with weird controls), this story might not be well developed yet, but the intrigue it gives, makes you expect from a hell of a development from further episodes, and with 18 to go, I hope they dont blew it off
Art: Last Week: 9 Now: 9
So what happens when you combine the best studios in visuals (A-1 Pictures), one of the best action animated studios (Trigger) and combine them with an unique artstyle? The artwork in this show is beautiful and unique, in every way you can imagine, the fighting scenes are just so amazingly enjoyable to the eye, really smooth and fresh
Sound: Last Week: 8 Now: 8
Voice Characters:Amazingly suited voice characters one of the best cast I ve heard.
VC Note: Ichigo voice actor is a first, and I'm really surprised of her work, zero two voice character is superb
Ost: Decent, I hope they can improve this feature
Character: Last Week: 9 Now: 9
Relatable, Likable and not a wimp, thats our main character nothing outstanding but I hope more development from him. His backstory was kind of unique, they showed us how he used to be the leader of the group as a kid, the way he gives them meaning by giving his friends a name, how he used to be in control of the situation, and how he changed due to the fact that he couldn't connect with his partner to pilot the Franxx and how some of his teammates see him as useless, but now with the introduction of his new partner Zero Two I hope a lot of development from this character.
The TWO BEST GIRLS in this anime Ichigo and Two Zero are AMAZING, while Ichigo is the true definition of best girl, Two Zero is a selfish brat that only uses Hiro for her own good, even though they are so different you they are really likable characters, that you are not sure who to root for, Two Zero is the uniquest anime girl I've watched not tsundere, yandere or any kind of dere trash, REALLY different from any anime girl I know so far and that's what makes her so unique. And apart from her being so self-confident, strong, and aggressive I'm sure there's still a lot more to come I cannot wait to see it!.
Episode 6 Edit: Wow Just amazing, episode 6 gave us a hell of a development between Two Zero and Hiro, their chemistry is just amazing, incredible how a character can carry the show on its own.
Enjoyment: Last Week: 9 Now :10
I'm hooked and I hope this stays as good as it has been, it has everything to become a remarkable anime and not just a mecha with weird ecchi controls, and cute girls, I hope this can be at least anime of the season
Every episode is better than the last
Remember there are 18 episodes to go, we dont know what to expect from this series, but if they keep on doing what they are doing so far, we could have a great surprise this year
I will keep this preliminary review brief and without touching the plot which is mostly easily derived from the synopsis.
Since this anime is so far incomplete, I won't try to explain why you should watch it since that'd be meaningless in the long run. Instead, I'll tell you that, if you found ANYTHING appealing about this show, you should go finish Eureka Seven and/or Kill la Kill and/or Gurren Lagann. THEN, if you liked at least two of those three shows, you should come back and finish this one when you can.
I am saying this because this anime already references ideas that are part of
the mentioned shows quite a lot, and it's hard to appreciate it without having watched those two to begin with, so if you like anything about this series, there's no reason to watch it now, before seeing things it is actually more or less based on.
So if you like some of what you've seen, or the show at least sounds interesting to you, as I said, watch its spiritual predecessors.
Well before we start, this is my first anime review, probably not the best you will ever see, but I feel like I have to write this review, seeing as how great of an anime it is.
- Episode watched while writing this review : 6 -
(I'll update every week)
Lets start off with the most interesting part of Darling In The FranXX, the story. There is just so much to talk about in this anime, the world building, who's behind all the commands, who is the 'Papa' the characters keep mentioning, how did the world became like this, etc. It brings a lot of
question onto the table, and the anime answers it quite well. In this world, we are told that the so known 'Klaxosaurs' are the reason the world was ruined. And to survive, they need FranXX to save the world ( just your typical post apocalyptic world setting). It kinda reminds me of Evangelion quite a bit, in a sense that the FranXX needs children to pilot them. Every FranXX needs a Pistil (the girl pilot) and a Stamen (the boy pilot) to pilot them, in a kinda awkward position, in which both needs to be connected to allow the FranXX to move. Throughout the episodes you can clearly notice that there are a lot of smart scripting here and there, minor details that really add up to the following episodes. The premise is really promising, and something that you can look forward to in the future.
Art / Animation :
I mean come on, it is a collab of Trigger and A-1, how can it be bad? I personally really like the character designs, they just look very refined and clean. Same goes for the FranXX designs, not very over the top design, but just looks great overall. Backgrounds are detailed, one of the best looking I'd say in this season. Animation wise are also top notch. Action scenes are breathtakingly gorgeous, facial expressions are on point, just something you'd expect from Trigger. Nothing much to really say about, the anime itself is self-explanatory.
OP - The song itself definitely isn't my cup of tea, it sounds awkward to me, and really doesnt interest me. However, visually it is very stunning. It is vivid, shows us quite a lot of the story, enough to entice you to watch the show.
ED - Unlike the OP, I personally really loved this ED, both the song and the visuals. 'Kiss Me', a song by all the female cast really feels catchy, something I didn't expect to hear after the OP. Visual wise its just a typical ending, not too much is going on, has an alternate setting of the world, assuming its just the world before any disaster has happened. Overall very enjoyable ED.
OST - I feel like this show really needs some Hiroyuki Sawano's score, the soundtracks in this feels kinda lackluster, some were great don't get me wrong, but most of the others are just 'forgettable'. They weren't unique enough for me, albeit the story itself is enough to drive the story forward, I feel like there is more to improve as soundtracks play a huge role in animes. However, episode 6 had some really good ost, it fitted really well with the scenes and was definitely one of the more enjoyable part, ost wise.
Voice Acting : This is something I think rarely anyone mentions, but sometimes it really comes down to some good voice acting that brings a show to life. In this case, they deliver quite seamlessly. Again, the show itself is proof for how good it is.
Another great part of Darling In The FranXX. The character development in this show is simply amazing. So many things that no one wouldve expect to come, and when they did, they literally blow me away. The shock factors really are something unique. Hiro as a child was confident, he was seemed as the leader of the squad, people looked up to him. But as he grew and started to pilot the FranXX, he had compatibility issues with his partner, soon enough he loses his confidence he once has. Though things changed when he met 002, turning his viewpoint of the world. Hiro started to fight for his rights, and in episode 6 we see him developing into someone who has a dream, and eagers to fulfill his own wishes. Where as 002 is not ur typical '___ 'dere, she's bold, she has her own thoughts, and speaks whatever she thinks, albeit sometimes she shows her weaker side. Other cast have their places too, and I especially like they way they dealt with Zorome and Mitsuru, seing as how Zorome at first was like an utter a'hole, and Mitsuru being the one standing by with Zorome, turns out that Zorome can be a sweetheart to his partner, where as Mitsuru just straight up abandoned his partner. But then again, they were resolved later on the show. The dialogues between the characters shows a lot too, which adds up to the action scenes. The slight hint of romance is also quite intriguing, especially on episode 5.
This is probably my favourite show of the season, alongside with After The Rain and Kokkoku. Darling In The FranXX has a lot of potential, and with 24episodes, I truly hope that Trigger and A-1 continue to deliver as time moves on.
