Taking place in a very distant in future, the adventure begins when a boy meets a certain girl. The Pan Galaxy Republic has declined and so have many empires. This resulted to people in the galaxy being scattered. Living in the peaceful side of their world, Banjou, who picks up trashes at the spherical wall met a girl, frozen, in a broken spaceship. There are bad guys who chase her, and thus, the quiet galaxy suddenly became lively. Little did he know that the frozen girl is Goza 168th, the key to decide the destiny of the whole universe. Overcoming hardship, the two embarks on a trip to make the Galaxy Republic alive again. It may be a difficult challenge, but it's alright, let's progress slowly! A comedy of irresponsible galaxy trip begins!
I actually wanted this to come out...I was excited for this...what was I thinking?
Remember when in the original, after Tylor left to do something for a bit, he came back, celebrating by telling the crew to set sail while he danced with confetti and a paper fan and shit? I wish the franchise came back in a similar fashion. Instead, it's like the franchise woke up from a cryogenic sleeping chamber and realized that it was tired and uncomfortable and subsequently made a sad face instead. It's disheartening and makes us feel like this was pointless, especially as a fan of the original Musekinin
Kanchou Tylor. So, what exactly happened here to spoil what was supposed to be a fun return for the franchise? Well, let's find out, shall we?
This anime doesn't understand the structure of a joke. It seems to think that there is only the punchline and that there is no set-up. Hell, it doesn't even try to play up the jokes as something meant to be funny. There’s no whimsical humor at all, and it feels like it's smiling while telling a punchline half-heartedly. Also, given that the anime is set way after the original, they kinda needed to try and make sense of things; they don't. Hell, they make things shockingly convoluted all things considered and narrate over things that could've been epic to see in the canon. In fact, they actually try to have a plot about a deranged lunatic trying to tail new Tylor and co. to usurp him as The Tylor (since apparently that's a rank now). They manage to create hold and errors in a 3 minute per episode gag series. I mean it; for example, a guy who actually died 20 years ago appears physically for a brief period with no reason as to how or why. How they manage to create holes and errors is beyond me. Hell, why they tried to have an overarching plot in a 3 minute per episode is already baffling. After all, all this amounts to is a product that is less than nothing, which really should not be possible.
The characters are borderline nothing as well, basically being basic shells of their original counterparts. Actually, they don't even hit all of the basic forms of their progenitors’ characterization. I get what kind of show this show is, but that's why this shouldn't have been a distant sequel revival. We don't even need to get started on how awful the villain is, right? This is a short kids show but seriously, why? Why this? In fact, why is one of the major characters (Dolly) absent for most of the series? Why did they end up spending months not being able to find her? These plot setups with are as terrible as the punchlines without setups.
Speaking of why, why is there some truly abysmal CGI? Oh wait, it’s a little kids show (supposedly) so that's why the ships and other things later on are rendered in some truly fugly CGI. The actual art is mediocre at best, and where when used to represent the original characters since their original art and designs from the 1995 anime were fantastic, to say the least. The animation is also lacking aside from the one mediocre bar brawl scene in episode 2. Not sure why we trusted Studio Seven's staff with this job.
The music is pretty limited too. Barring that one banjo jingle at every episode title card, we have the rather annoying “cutesy” J-pop ED, and a small selection of weak tracks that aren't even memorable. Just bringing up the sound department is padding, but it's the best or least bad aspect of the show.
You know, I wouldn't be so mad if this show was...just another installment in the franchise and target towards kids. It would still be a brutally subpar at best children's show that doesn't even understand the foundations of a joke, but I wouldn't be this mad. The fact of the matter is, this less than nothing show is the revival of a once great franchise that never really finished itself, so that's the salt being rubbed into the wound, or rather the straw that breaks the camel’s back for me. It elicits expectations that it shouldn't both by being a distant sequel and a revival at the same time. Therefore, the circumstances drag down a borderline worthless yet mostly harmless product down into something far worse. It's a victim of its own timing, and for a revival of a once read series, we need something better than what could've just been a random spinoff nearly no one cared about. But alas, this ship has hit a supernova, and this season is drawing to a close as is. Maybe that's unfair, but it is what it is. With all that said, I bid you adieu.
As a great fan of the original Irresponsible Captain Tylor and appreciator of short anime, I can safely say: This crap stain just don't know which public it was made for.
Is it for the fans of the original series? Well, ICT aired in 1993. I was born in 1993, and watched the series in 2015. I am 25 years old. Why in the world would someone like me enjoy a series that's just a very very poor attempt to make a children's series? Not even a kid would find this funny.
Now. Imagine the people who watched ICT in the original airing. These people are
probably 30-40 years old now. This isn't adult humor - they would sleep. And isn't children's humor either. It's not funny to anyone.
What about the original characters? Would a long-term fan be happy to see them again? Well... They just aren't here.
Remember how Tylor used to be a parody of Yang Wenli (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)? A kind, careless, lazy and kinda selfish character, who doesn't care for battles or becoming a hero, but gifted with a rare strategical mind which can win space battles with unusual, unexpected ideas. The original Tylor follows this pattern, just in a comedic way.
Banjou Tylor is nothing like the original. He's just lazy. A happy-go-lucky lazy kid. That's his only character trait. I know, I know, each episode is only 3 min long. Well, a single episode of, let's say, Saiki Kusuo no Psi-Nan (5 minutes long) has better character development than 12 episodes of Musekinin Galaxy Tylor. God, even Pupa has.
The same thing can be said about Goza and Yamamoto. Just dim shadows of their original versions. Yamamoto is not even human anymore. His turning into a robot must have been an attempted joke about his robotic personality in ICT. It didn't work.
And, again, remember when I said that this doesn't look like it's made for children? Take a look at Dolly's clothes. She's a new character. "Character", pffff. Tell me that her... Panties??? are suitable for a children's series!
Finally, the story. I don't know what kind of story this thing is trying to tell. Eveything happens as if you're watching McGyver. Asspulls and nonsensical events. The nonsensical events are there just to generate jokes. Jokes that aren't funny. Everything works like an ouroboros. A snake biting its own tail. Except, it's not a snake. It's a very long piece of shit.
CONCLUSION: Musekinin Galaxy Tylor isn't for the old fans of the series. Isn't for children (it's PG rated!). Isn't for anyone. Don't watch this.
Allow me to preface this 'revew' with a warning: If you are looking into this series because you were a fan of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, turn back. Do NOT watch this series. Avoid this pile of steaming trash like the plague.
This is not a sequel, it is a spin-off. This is to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor as Puni Puni Poemy was to Excel Saga. Except worse. Much, much, much worse.
Now that that has been said, let's dive into this:
Story: If there is an actual story to this thing then I have yet to see it and we're already 5 episodes in. The first episode
intros with a monologue that tries to be interesting, unfortunately any interest that may have been generated comes crashing down as soon as the 3-minute mark is reached and the credits start to roll. That's right, each episode is approximately 3-minutes long. What could be worse than that? In those 3-minutes a bunch of random, but wholly inconsequential, stuff happens which thus amounts to nothing.
Art: I'm willing to give the art a pass but only because when it's not super-deformed it proves to actually be half-decent. Unfortunately, the majority of the animation falls into that category. Heck, episode 5 is almost entirely presented in a Japanese tapestry-style right-to-left side scroll of still images with voice-over narration. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen but it is, ultimately, nothing to write home about either. The best parts so far have been seeing the ship's engine and the end-credit still-frame artwork.
Sound: The sound work in this honestly remind me of cartoons from the 80's. By that, I draw direct comparison to the likes of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies. It's really out of place, tends to be too prominent, and is just bad.
Characters: The characters are awful. And I mean gawd awful. Our main character, Banjo (because he carries a freakin' banjo with the smiley face graphic that not-garbage Tylor wore as a pin on his trenchcoat in the original) Ueki Tylor, has about as much character as a flea. He acts aloof in the vein of Justy Ueki Tylor but it ends up seeming to be nothing more than a thin cardboard cutout. Yamamoto is a whiny robot with no redeeming qualities. And Azalyn is loud and obnoxious. It's like they decided to take the most obvious, single overarching character trait of the original source characters (Tylor - carefree and alloof, Yamamoto - whiny and always worried, and Azalyn - childishly selfish) while ignoring everything else that made them interesting. It pains me greatly.
Enjoyment: Honestly, there is none. As one who loved everything about The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, there is not one single enjoyable quality about this show. It may be something that a very young child might enjoy, but that's where any potential for enjoyment ends.
Overall: As I said at the beginning of this review, avoid this show as though it were the plague. There are no redeeming qualities other than, perhaps, the pin-up style still shots of the characters in the end credits; the artwork on those pictures is actually pretty darn good and very reminiscent of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Do not watch this show, for the love of Tylor and all that is carefree! Don't do it!
