Poputepipikku turns absurdist comedy up to eleven with its pop culture references and surreal hilarity. With two bonafide high school girl protagonists—the short and exceptionally quick to anger Popuko, and the tall and unshakably calm Pipimi—they throw genres against the wall and don't wait to see what sticks. Parody is interlaced with drama, action, crudeness, and the show's overarching goal—to become a real anime.
Poputepipikku is based on bkub Ookawa's 4-koma manga series of the same title. Each episode consists of a 12-minute segment repeated twice. The repeated segment contains a different voiceover by another voice actor with variations on the skits.
The Anime Gods have descended into 2018...and gave us the most kuso (or shitty) anime in the history of anime, and you either love this series to death OR just don't care about it, because #dankmemes!!!
That's what Pop Team Epic is, a crappy manga turned into an anime...that actually showcases the talents of multiple people from their simple jobs of designing and drawing art for comic-sized works.
So...the first balldrop is Hoshiiro Girldrop, who would have thought. For those who have watched the 1st episode, this comes as no surprise by the time the segment ended with Popuko appearing as though they have hijacked the whole
segment. So for those expecting more of that, you're gonna be hijacked the same way too.
The main meat is by small studio Kamikaze Douga. "Beef or Chicken" anyone? Gotta say that for a small collab between small studios, the people behind Pop Team Epic are really creative (and shitty) and have never gotten the experience of making anime before, so it's a good thing!
The main stories by Space Cat Company, director Jun Aoki has made good in the episodic settings, and just like the main meat itself, is handled by people whom have no prior knowledge about making anime, so I've gotta say everything is really well planned beforehand.
If you're a retro fan, the Pop Team 8-bit has you covered! Makoto Yamashita, still studying in University (like it's hard to understand if your IQ is less than 100), actually made these short videos that are impressive on its own, and for such a young person to fully dedicate on this segment is pure buzzkill.
Last but not least, the most cringe-worthy of them all, Bob Team Epic or Bobunemimimmi by AC Dept really fleshes how much they love the main protagonists Popuko and Pipimi to a T by creating bizarre segments that are not funny and very weird, but they kinda work their way around craziness. Along with the live-action UchuuPeople, it's nice to see Popuko and Pipimi live action with its weird idiosyncrasies.
I don't need to talk about the art and animation as the show speaks for itself. What does though, is the music, especially the OST and casting of character voices. So firstly, the OST. If you care about Hoshiiro Girldrop's Episode 1 opening, just listen to that. What I'm talking about is the main OP "Pop Team Epic" by Sumire Uesaka. IT'S DAMN LIT OP, who would have thought that this show had a bright starring kuso OP that in the Winter 2018 season of lackluster openings, this guilty pleasure of a show can easily fit in my Top 5 OPs for the season! The ED does deserve its own mention because since the episode loops twice, different CVs took care of it, and speaking of CVs, most of you know by now that the 24 min episode looooops twwwiiiice just because with different CVs, but since you don't care about rewatching it again, so whatever.
So...is this your AOTS, AOTY, or AOAA (Anime of All Time)? HUH!? I'm really not gonna kid that this show's not for everyone, but if you have the means to, you either get N or get OUT.
As a crazy, stupefied person, I love this series to death, and haters come at me if you feel so...so...so...
Just being "LUL so RANDOM BRUH" isn't good random comedy, PTE was an assault on the senses that made me feel like I had autism, and not even in a meme way... b-but tumblr likes it so it MUST be good right!? This show was physically and mentally draining to experience....
Saw an idiot try to compare this to robot chicken, and I'm like WTF are you talking about? RC at least has consistency in its style, stop motion, and format... Pop Team Epic is like giving some seizure victims one day to shit out bad pop-culture references and gather them
all together and call it a unique show due to it's bad 2006 Newgrounds animation. This isn't random Japanese comedy, it is random ATTEMPTS at comedy thrown at you so quickly and confusingly you have no actual time to enjoy anything.
The only thing legitimately funny about all this are the people ironically supporting it for luls thinking they are being edgy internet masters by supporting a shitty show. No, you are nothing new, and you are not funny, go back to 2003 internet. You don't get brownie points for trying to fool passers by who don't know any better and actually think you are being serious when you praise this awful mess. Go to 4chan, every other /a/ meme is a PTE one, HMMMMM wonder why, it's almost as if they get laughs out of playing like bad shows are actually good, HMMMM.
Pop Team Epic is a mess, even Aqua Teen Hunger Force, probably the most random show ever most would agree, has a solid enough cast and beginning episode buildup that the random events actually a PAY OFF! Just being random doesn't get you creative LOL points. Do not be fooled by fake contrarian asses pretending to like and defend this show, the whole thing is a cringey meme. I've been watching anime and adult swim since the day I was god damn born.... and guess what folks, Pacing STILL matters in random comedy, it still needs a center.
Even CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL; with aliens, a gorilla, Freddy Mercury, and a ROBOT going to a delinquent school together made more sense than this show... you don't automatically get "HAR HAR HAX0R" laughs for assaulting the screen with random happenings and expecting the odd pop-culture references to carry the audience....
Pop Team Epic isn't random humor, it's just random attempts at humor thinking it's MEMEry and artist contributions make it something worth talking about, it is NOT worth it.
This show is like flipping t.v. channels in hell. Skip this pretentious TRASH!
We have a new candidate for most polarizing anime of all time. There appears to be no middle ground on this one. You will either absolutely love this or your reaction will be that there is a special place in hell for whoever dreamed this one up.
I have devised a fool-proof test for whether you'll like this show or not. The results are based on your reaction to this joke:
Question: Why did Salvador Dali's chicken cross the road? Answer: A fish, m*therf**ker.
If you found that joke to be funny, you'll enjoy this show and I am happy for you. For everyone else I'm reminded of
the description of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Watching this show is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick. If only I knew some voluntary organizations exist to help you rehabilitate afterward. Note that your enjoyment of this show has nothing whatever to do with your intelligence; only with what you find funny. If you are one of those folks who finds train wrecks mind-numbingly funny, then this is the show for you. For everyone else, you'll be better spending your time elsewhere.
The art is intentionally poor. There is no story; just seemingly random, and I use the term loosely, gags.
I set a new personal record for time spent before dropping a series. I did force myself to suffer through additional episodes just to get this review accepted.
Before anyone can answer the question: "What is Pop Team Epic?" I believe a more pressing question is more like "Why in hell am I writing a serious review of this shit post?"
Actually, I have an answer to that question, unlike the first one. First of all, I love my absurd and nonsensical Chinese cartoons; I have a special place in my heart (and in some case my Top 10) for shows like Nichijou, Daily Lives of HS Boys, and of course, Gintama. That said, I don't really think Pop Team Epic can really stand up to those shows when we are talking about how
entertaining they are, disregarding how much meaning or (non)sense they have integrated into their identity.
I understand these are all big words, so I'll simplify it for those who only care for this anime because it's a shitpost:
Pop Team Epic is a funny shitpost... but it gets old pretty quick.
Although I have to say, this show almost convinced me that I should think otherwise, as this show isn't really trying to be anything grander than a shitpost.
The problem is- while I can get lost watching vines, cracks and just plain memes on YouTube all day, I really can't say the same for Pop Team Epic.
I understand I am only on the fourth episode of the anime as I am making this review, however, I am already bored of it.
The problem with the anime is that random bullshit doesn't always equal entertainment for the audience. Bullshit needs consistency in its logic (unfortunately), or else it just becomes aimless, incoherent and pointless.
It's not like the anime is trying to parody one thing either. If it dedicated it's entire runtime to parodying JRPG anime like SAO (for example), then at least there would be something there for people to refer to for humor. It's a simple case of knowing what they are referencing, and the joke accurately making fun of the concept in a refreshing way.
Parody anime like Gintama have mastered this effectively- I'm not going to give spoilers, but a recent example of how Gintama plays with concepts found in its genre (shounen) and then shits on it while making it genuinely entertaining, is a scene from one of the latest episodes.
The scene was of negotiations. On "our" side, we had the Shogun, whom now has bowel problems (it makes sense why he has bowel problems in context) and of one of the enemy leaders who was requested to negotiate with. The bowel problems in a normal shounen would be similar to that of "butterflies in the stomach", however, the joke doesn't stop there as it builds on itself. The shogun tries to subtly hint at his need to go to the bathroom without being direct about it, the enemy takes his references out of context and interprets them as threats. Without ruining the joke by saying what happens next, essentially the enemy leader understands by the end that the Shogun needed to shit, and "negotiations" end there. Both are embarrassed, to say the least, and all misconceptions between the two sides are adjourned. That is literally how you shit on negotiations.
Now after reading that somewhat competent explanation of a joke you probably didn't understand, tell me, when does Pop Team Epic do something like that?
Initially, I thought Pop Team Epic was a parody of the slice of life genre, much like Nichijou, by taking scenarios you would see in real life and pushing the joke to 11. I haven't read the 4-Koma manga, but I remember a few strips that would support that claim- as I saw that Popuko was giving the middle finger in a scenario you really wouldn't because of social norms. I thought when I saw this "This would really be funny because that's what we all want to do", so where is all of this in the anime?
I suppose it can be later down the road, but why do we also have to do a parody of video games (that really doesn't make sense), horror movies, anime, manga, Hollywood blockbuster films intermixed with random nonsense that both looks ugly and makes no sense, AND THEN having the entire episode repeat itself before having time to comprehend it?
There's such a thing as overload, and Pop Team Epic doesn't seem to understand that you can't be funny without something like a breather.
Not to mention the lack of consistency in both the animation and stories themselves damages all suspension of disbelief. That said, I never had any, nor did it need suspension of disbelief, because the purpose of this anime is to shit on other media.
All Pop Team Epic needed to do was shit on others right.
And it didn't.
Now I'm sure that something will change in the span of the next 9 episodes, actually, I am practically guaranteeing that they'll do something crazy for their finale. But right now I am just bored of this anime.
What is Pop Team Epic? I suppose Pop Team Epic is just... too much of everything.
