Uma Musume: Pretty Derby

Famous racehorses that have left behind worthy legacies, unique as they can be, are reincarnated as horse girls in a parallel world. In this life, they start their journey anew as they continue to race and perhaps relive the success they once lived through.

Aspiring to become the best racehorse in Japan, a horse girl named Special Week moves to Tokyo to enroll in the Tracen Academy—an institution that nurtures horse girls like her to become better racers. There, Special Week witnesses the sophisticated running style of Silence Suzuka and is inspired to become a racer like her. Shortly after, Special Week finds herself recruited into Silence Suzuka's team, Spica. From there, she begins her path to the top—one lap at a time.

After watching UmaMusume: pretty derby (and all the seasons/series), i can say that this season works really well on its own. special week is a complete protagonist, with a clear story, real growth, real thoughts, and development that actually makes sense. the way she carries her role and the impact she leaves throughout the season are memorable in a simple but effective way. the memory that stays is the crowd calling her name and the emotion of her victories.

Even though it didn’t end up being my favorite season after watching everything, it still delivers a solid experience and sets up the world of UmaMusume really ... well. each season shines in a different way, and this one does exactly what it needs to do within the series.

Mixed Feelings

This is not the best start to uma musume, the game does a much better job of introducing you and getting you to like some characters. Even if those characters that appear in this anime happen to be the ones you like from the game you can simply watch the episodes they appear in. You don't have to watch this just play the game and look up funny moments from it on YouTube. I have not seen the 3rd season and I don't want to. Its like every mid slice of life anime you have ever seen but with maybe some cool horse women eating ... food I guess.

I highly recommend every other form the uma musumes appear in as for some reason they are all better written and better directed.
I am extremely addicted to the mobile game. Thank you.

Even though I enjoy the game and franchise as a whole, the first season isn't particularly compelling.

Some of the aspects of their world that are normal but to us are horsey are fun, but underutilized.

The sound was frequently mixed weird with glitches and bad balancing.

The art felt manufactured and soul-less which unfortunately made it visually unappealing and didn't play into the fun designs the horse girls have.

As a sports anime, it missed that sparkle that good sports anime have. The outcomes were pretty predictable and I never felt the stakes. The idol aspect of winning the races feels like a weird afterthought in ... nearly every case.
