Digimon Adventure tri. 5: Kyousei

Ok let's get right to it, this was really bad.

When it was first announced that the new Digimon Tri series was changing from a television series to 6 movies, I expected the reasoning was to provide higher quality animation. However, it has become apparent that what Toei is truly aiming for; is to maximise movie ticket sales due to Digimon Adventure fans being starved for content.

The majority of the 'movie' is dialogue placed onto still frames, the basics of visual stroytelling is "show, don't tell" . The best scene to highlight the failure of that is when it cut to it raining in the ... digital world and one of the digimon said it was just sunny a minute ago, they could at least show the transition of the two weather effects. All of these saved costs and I was expecting the climax of the movie to be an all out fight scene, instead we get a slideshow of mega level digimon bumping into each other with no special moves being utilised. Transcendent Sword, terra force, giga blaster, the list goes on. I'm not expecting Your Name or Unlimited Blade Works level of quality but this was embarrassing.

The writing is incredibly poor as well, one moment has the DigiDestined taking refuge at school where they proceed to tell scary stories at night. Although enjoyable for some members of the audience, the scene is misplaced and takes time away from a movie where already very little is happening. The only explanation for this is that they can create likeable characters to allow for more selling of merchandise.
The 02 cast is completely ignored for no explicit reason, I mean I don't care about Iori or Miyako but the CHARACTERS should. There is no reason for them not to be constantly worried/searching for them, it feels unnatural and shows the writers either aren't willing to put in any real effort or don't care about the original source material.
Meiko is a pretty divisive character and I am of the side where she detracts from the series. Especially in this movie, she steals screentime and adds nothing to the cast dynamic. It's like they wanted to make a character so shy introverts can relate to her and feel they belong in the digimon cast. She takes up more than half the movie and its showing that she's going to the main hero of the series which is beyond annoying. It was advertised as digimon adventure cast kicking ass, not digimon adventure cast babysitting a wannabe Shinji with none of her character quirks explained.

It's not like it was all terrible, it often has good ideas with terrible execution. If I was in charge and could go back in time, I would create a Digimon prequel movie with the original 5 DigiDestined (Maki and Daigo) and in the end credits of that announce digimon tri. Also would scrap Meiko's character entirely. The story of tri would focus on Maki manipulating Taichi and others to revive Tapirmon while being manipulated herself. That is happening right now but it's kinda displayed in the movies as an afterthought rather than the focus.

I wouldn't be so upset if this was a regular 2 cour series, but this is 6 movies with 6-9 months wait time in between each one and the animation and story is incredibly subpar. I am glad that a digimon adventure sequel even exists but extremely disappointed at how lackluster it is. Toei is exploiting digimon fans and their trust in the franchise to make a few extra dollars.

I want to start by saying that even though Digimon Adventure tri. 5: Kyousei isn't as bad as the previous one, Soushitsu, it wasn't good either. The same thing that made the fourth film go down on my concept is the same thing that sank this one.

Everything starts well with some action, so I had the impression that they would make their wrongs right, but all went down the drain went almost 3 episodes were about Meiko and the DigiDestined convincing her about things that were already said in previous films. A mention about how displeased Meiko is with Meicoomon's actions would be ... okay, plot-wise, but we end up with almost all DigiDestined trying to convince her that she is Meicoomon's partner and she must stay by her side, and they repeat that several times, until her decision is like "kill my digimon". Woman, Homeostasis and Yggdrasil have been trying to do that, but you guys keep butting in, anyhow it doesn't unfold like that.

What made me give a 5 instead of a 4 this time were the action scenes and Tailmon's (Gatomon, whatever you call her) mega evolution, which people were expecting to be Ophanimon, but it was a fallen version of it (also you guys remember that episode from the original series where people have been saying that Hikari was in love with Taichi? When Hikari saw that Taichi disappeared and she was saying things like "I must be by his side" all the memories came back, if you ship TK and Hikari it's time to drop that ship) thanks to Hikari's incapacity to deal with a possible Taichi's death.

What I said in the last review stands for this one as well, and I'm afraid to say that, being the next film the last one, Digimon Adventure tri. was poorly written, it raises more questions than answers, the concept of Homeostasis, Yggdrasil, Hackmon's intentions and many other things are left unexplained, maybe those concepts were better explained in other series of Digimon, but being tri. a direct continuation of the original two (also nothing yet about those 4 DigiDestined from the 2nd season) they should have explained it better.

I do hope that film 6 will be a longer episode, because from experience of film 4 and 5 they waste too much time with information that either is repetitive or unnecessary.

Here's what I thought for the 5th installment, I liked it. A lot. Why? Let's get started. And bring on the final part already.

Story: 7
Now some parts of this movie was a bit of a roundabout and redundant, but at least this time we don't have any face rape. I advise, some scenes might be a bit confusing like the recurring digimons, I believe recaps might be necessary. I actually had to rattle my brain a bit to remember some stuff from previous movies as a result. [6.5, if I could for the actual story]

What I really adored was some of the most ... "forgotten" parts of the entire series being brought back up, even if it was a brief moment [like that ocean], was terrific.
There's one more thing I have to credit the series for, even for this movie, would be the pacing per movie so far. Each of the movie would usually start a bit slow and then around the mid-end, would increase the pace and it doesn't really destroy the story by doing so, this is what I love. Also the humor in the story was really adorable, and builds up some of the characters as a result. [7 for the pacing and atmosphere of the story though]

Art: 7
Not much to really say, I mean, it just followed up like the previous movies, I liked it, so I just gave it a 7 this time.

Sound: 8
With some newer tracks added to the movie and including the ending song, which I'm actually fond of, it was pretty nice. As usual the soundtracks befits the scenes appropriately, 8 it was.

Character: 9
I've enjoyed the characters more than before, especially Taichi's interaction with Meiko, additionally, Agumon and Meiko's interaction. Heck all that reporting, was really fun for me. It was a gossip moment.
Also the bonds of the digimons with the kids, although they're still traumatized and reluctant, they've went ahead and embraced it.
I'd really say that the 'relationship' is a major keyword to this installment, especially near the ending. I absolutely loved the ending moment [Omegamon and Taichi's trust, and Yamato's leadership]. 9, my 9.

Enjoyment: 9
Once again, I felt like I was a kid, watching and hyping for it. I've enjoyed and savored every moment of it, the humor, the anticipation, and mostly, the childhood factor. Sitting through the movie was easy and is easy, I kept sitting there and finished it without even stopping. It's fun.

Overall: 8
I'd say that the thing that really set me down with the story was Omegamon at the end of the movie, that completely did the perfect job for me.
Honestly, I could be simple but I do think it's a fair movie, nonetheless, it's really up to one's judgement and opinion.

Story/Character

So here we are, movie no. 5 and still I ask the obvious: Why the hell is nobody bothered by the disappearance of the 02 digidestined? You would of thought that not being in contact WITH ANY of them since before the events started, then facing an Imperialdramon and seeing Himekawa with Ken's digivice that somebody would of thought ' Oh, wait a minute, we haven't seen Davis, Ken or the others since this all started. We should check on them". I mean why bother adding the scene at the very beginning of movie no.1 of Davis and co. seemingly being defeated if ... you aren't going to have it be a major theme. Now moving on, my next rant is at Meiko. I mean, what is the actual point of her? She adds nothing to the group and has little-to-no significance other than being Meicoomon's partner. The problem is because the movies frequently try to focus on Meiko, all too often the other digidestined feel like they far in the background, then we have the poor consistency with character development, as the movies try to balance it out with plot progression, but fails. I will give credit though, when the digidestined follow Jesmon and Raguelmob into the digital world, the balance of good art, music and drama really did well to add to the scene. But then of course, the writers decide to take one of the best digimon around (Angewoman) and (in the non-literal sense) fuck her up. I mean seriously, Ophanimon Falldown mode looks badass and all, but fusing her with Raguelmon turns her into some naked, insane-looking demon lady, as Tailmon's evolutionary line is one of my favs, (third to Agumon's and Piyomon's) its pretty sad to see. I would like to have seen more of Opanimon FM.

Art & Sound -
Overall, as good as expected. Butterfly and Braveheart are amazing songs, although some of the art was designed with good aesthetics in mind, rather than detail. Jesmon, in my opinion, was an example, looked well designed, but lacked detail.

Enjoyment/Overall - Despite the obvious and somewhat frustrating flaws with the plot and characters, it is a good to watch movie series and a definite must see (even if for 1 ep) for any Digimon Adventure fans.

Quick note: Digimon fan since I was 7 years old. I'm 28 now. I've watched all there is about Digimon up to this point and also have played a few Digimon videogames.

This movie was... a disappointment and I won't be able to explain why without SPOILERS so you have been warned.

The story moves at a slow pace up to the very ending where it just feels rushed. Every Ultimate Digimon is fighting eachother, Meicoomon seemed to protect Meiko in one moment and then that's completely disregarded, for some odd reason everyone is okay with the idea of murdering Meicoomon after the whole "we're ... all friends" pep talk, only the Alpha Digiboys get the spotlight which always upsets me (there's 8 DigiChosen, why is it always about the two main penises????) and then we're supposed to believe that Taichi and Nishijima fell to their deaths. Let's analyze this scene further:

1) Two characters fall to their deaths, one of which is a childhood bro and only Mimi cries about it and Hikari falls into a state of shock, which is only understandable. The rest react as if they were inanimate objects, including his always-hungry partner.
2) Taichi has been wearing his trademark goggles on his neck. However, when he falls to his "death", the goggles are found near the cliff he fell from. Because logic.
3) No one gives a flying fluff about Nishijima's apparent death.
4) Did the staff really think that us, Digimon fans, would ever believe that the DigiPosterBoy would be killed off?????
5) Yamato's leadership skills are cringe, specially when he put the goggles on his neck.

Also, the voice chosen for Huckmon does not fit him at all.

One last thing: the ending of the movie will feel like you're watching Neon Genesis Evangelion (which is an amazing series but that's beside the point) rather than a Digimon film.

Overall, I give this movie a 5/10.

Just got done catching up on this installment as i've already watched the previous 4 "movies" though their all really just a collection of 4 episodes of an anime that were released as soon as they were completed. Gotta say I'm disappointed. I grew up on the original digimon show(s) [grew out of it by the time tamers finished airing in the states] and was looking forward to revisiting the world and characters I grew up with.

Instead what we have is a super confusing fanfction-y ass plot centered around a self-insert OC and her simultaneously the cutest thing ever and also the most edge ... lord digimon ever. Whats worse is it doesn't even usually feel like digimon until about the 4th episode or so of every batch of episodes (last 20-30 minutes of each movie), and until then we're treating to events either hyping up what a secret edge lord meicoomon is, random cute girls (and digimon) doing cute things, or one of the digidestined being mopey because they have to grow up and be a responsible adult (Joe) or because they can't stop their raging hormones in regards to their other digidestined (various).

I realize that I'm complaining about whats essentially All Grown Up for weebs but still... This is the internet and i'm gonna complain about unimportant shit on the internet while I still can, damnit! (As of this review the FCC repealed net neutrality about a month ago).

ENG: this fifth movie had everything to be great, but that was not what happened. Speaking first of the good things before going to the bad things (which are not few): the sound part stays in good quality (knowing well when and where to use) and good animation (thank you for not having those 3D animations that happened in the previous film). Well, now comes the bad part. 1- the main story is very weak (the script is not cooperating), because in one of the events (the memories) of one of the previous films, the "overcoming" of the problems between digimon and digidestined is being ... very fast (taking away all the drama from the third film). There is also a great simplification of the plot, there is no deep discourse of what is happening (the whole world is collapsing and then what is done? Stay talking about horror stories! WHAT?!). 2- The coming of several cliche scenes about friendship (some characters do not even seem to have a true friendship. And again, the whole world is urgently in danger and has few options to solve this, what can be done even with a powerful helper? NOTHING. "Because I believe in the power of friendship" or "because if I do something with our" friend ", she will be sad" ...... please, serious!? They need is a reality clash! 3- characters that seemed to be interesting are totally wasted (himekawa is a good example of this). 4- a loss of opportunities to show good action scenes (they are not bad, but they look pretty generic. creativity is lacking).In this film many things are too simple, but no a tragedy.

PORT: esse quinto filme tinha tudo para ser ótimo, mas não foi isso que ocorreu. Falando primeiro das coisas boas antes de ir para as coisas ruins ( que não são poucas): a parte sonora se mantém na boa qualidade ( sabendo bem quando e onde usar) e uma boa animação ( obrigado por não ter aquelas animações 3D que houve no filme anterior). Bom, agora vem a parte ruim : 1- a história principal está bem fraca ( o roteiro não está cooperando), pois em um dos acontecimentos (memórias) de um dos filmes anteriores, a "superação" dos problemas entre os digimons e digiescolhidos está sendo muito rápida ( tirando facilmente todo o drama do terceiro filme). Além disso, está havendo uma grande simplificação do enredo , não havendo uma discursão profunda do que está acontecendo ( o mundo inteiro está entrando em colapso e aí o que se faz? Ficar falando sobre histórias de terror! O QUE?! ). 2- a vinda de várias cenas clichês sobre amizade ( alguns personagens nem parece ter uma amizade verdadeira. Novamente, o mundo inteiro urgentimente está em perigo e tem poucas opções para resolver isso, o que se pode fazer mesmo tendo um ajudante poderoso? NADA!. "Porque eu acredito no poder da amizade" ou "porque se eu fizer algo com nosso "amigo", ela vai ficar triste"......é sério isso !? Eles precisam é de um choque de realidade! 3- personagens que pareciam ser interessantes são totalmente desperdissados ( himekawa é um bom exemplo disto). 4- uma perda de oportunidades para mostrar boas cenas de ação ( elas não são ruins, mas parecem bem genéricas. Está faltando criatividade). Nesse filme muitas coisas estão simples demais, mas também não é uma tragédia.

Well, well, well, it seems we have another installment in the long-running Digimon franchise. And let me tell you, folks, Digimon Adventure tri. 5: Kyousei doesn't disappoint. It's got all the classic elements of a Digimon anime - epic battles, friendship, and of course, the digital monsters themselves.

Set three years after the events of the previous installment, Kyousei follows the original DigiDestined as they face a new threat to the digital world. But this time, they're not alone. They're joined by a group of new DigiDestined, each with their own unique personalities and Digimon partners.

The animation in this anime is ... top-notch, with vibrant colors and smooth movements that will leave you in awe. And while the plot may not be the most groundbreaking, it's still a fun and engaging ride that will keep you entertained.

But if I were to attempt it, I might say something along the lines of, 'Well, isn't this just a jolly good anime with its action-packed battles and lovable digital monsters? It's almost enough to make me want to whip out my old Digivice and join the DigiDestined myself.'

Overall, I'd give this anime a solid 8/10. It's a must-watch for fans of the Digimon franchise and a fun ride for newcomers as well.

Ini memiliki semua elemen klasik dari anime Digimon - pertarungan epik, persahabatan, dan tentu saja, monster digital itu sendiri.
