Chinese animation is largely inferior to its Japanese contemporaries, running into issues of substandard art design, terrible comedic timing and a lack of creative flair to give the show life. I'd all but given up hope of finding anything decent in the industry until stumbling upon How to Steal 55 Kisses, a novel adaptation about two sisters who fall in love with the same guy

55 Kisses has the feel of a soap opera operating under a constant wave of melodrama from characters that face obstacles in their desire to be together. Qiao Anhao feels guilt about liking the same person her own sibling does and ... struggles to gumption up the courage to tell him how she feels. Lu Jinnian is in love with Anhao, but a busy schedule makes it difficult for him to commit to a relationship. These obstacles can of course be avoided by the ability to communicate properly - a basic human function that seems to escape 99% of romantic protagonists and nonetheless here as well.

55 Kisses speeds through its story with just 11 minutes committed to each episode and a time skip mid season. I would have preferred if they did pace themselves a bit more and give us more time to enjoy these characters, but there's also merit in a romance that doesn't dawdle on its premise. A second season is needed in order to continue the story as it ends in the middle of an arc without any finality. From what I've read from various sources across the internet, the anime doesn't get into the crux of the story and serves as more of a prologue

The character designs are quite good. In what is usually a weakness for the industry is a strength in this anime. Lu is a gorgeous woman with flowing black hair complemented by her dark olive eyes, and Lu is the type of mysterious badass hot dude that'll make even the straightest of men question their sexuality. The animation on the other hand is not good. Every moving vehicle is in CG and the abundance of static shots can hurt the immersion for the viewer, but thankfully the overall aesthetic is enough to make this tolerable

The voice acting will take some time to get used to for any seasoned anime fan. The Chinese language is significantly different and the performances themselves are worse than the more experienced seiyuu's we see throughout the Japanese animation industry. This was not a turn off for me per say, but it may be for others that can't quite acclimate to the differences in pronunciation and tone

"Chinese anime" used to be synonymous with soulless garbage for me, but perhaps that was unfair now I've seen they're capable of producing a solid adaptation that can appeal to fans throughout the romance genre. This isn't a particularly great anime by any means, but a reminder that there is potential in the Chinese industry. I'll definitely be looking out for more including any news for a follow up season to conclude this story of a complicated love.

earlier i thought that most of the chines story are bad as compared to their Japaneses counter part
but one day while searching for anime to watch i fell on this show an man it literally changed the way i watch chines anime there after.

the only problem you would have to read and watch both the comic and the anime show because some points are left in the anime and some part are left in the comic

so watch the anime first (it will be confusing at some parts because the filler is left in the comic) later read the comic and again watch those parts ... of anime where you dont understand or dont get the point

P.S. some part in the anime are a bit wrong as per the comic

If you are not one who likes to watch incomplete series, then definitely do not watch this show. My score for this series may change if a sequel comes out. Just right when I was deep into he story and boom! What an unexplained awkward ending. Makes me think what will happen between them, why does this happen, and why did it end like this? It needs a sequel.
Though the story is normal and there is nothing special, but I like it that an episode is only about 11 minutes. So it doesn't bore me out.
Overall it's a ... decent series, probably because I didn't have high expectations. Which after watching, it turns out to be quite a low-key pleasant surprise. For me I didn't really like the voice actors, I don't know why but I felt that it is a little awkward, probably because it's my first chinese 'anime' and I'm too used to Japanese VA. All in all, I do hope for a sequel though, but if the sequel ends in a way similar to this... I'm giving up on this series man.

Okay! It's good to see something different from the usual stuff. At first i was very skeptical at Chinese animations but after watching one or two, i guess i could say i got hooked. Let me explain to you why.

The plot: the plot is somewhat generic as you may think of it but it's not, it's about two persons who fell in love at first sight. But the both of them does not know how he/she trully feels. Due to other circumstances such as work and studies not to mention other parties, they can't express their true feelings to one another. But not only ... that, by the time they mustered up enough courage and self esteem something or someone is forcing them to be apart from each other, it's like fate is against the both of them. Ahh.. how will it turn out for the both of them. Will hate and aguish take a hold of them or will love conquers all. By the way, this type of plot is not common amongst the Anime world (Romances/Melodramas), the setting is unique in the genre, i can only name a few of them, mostly we've been bombarded by highschool romances/melodramas that are full of cliches and cringeness. It's really refreshing to see something different that you can actually relate to.

The Characters: well, both MC's are lovable and instanlty i got some sort of connection, the female lead is perfect, she is rich, she is beautiful, she is smart, she is elegant, that's how an ideal girl should be that every boy should dream, although she's a bit clumsy but that only adds to her character it makes her more girly and lovable, i mean, due to her clumsiness the male lead has a purpose and a reason, and that reason is to protect and care. As for the male lead himself, hes a bit tsundere, yeah eventhough he has feelings for her he can't express himself towards her and i think i know the reason why, it's because he has yet to prove himself that he can be worthy to stand by her side. How lovely is that? Girls out there wouldn't you agree? <3 guy like that trying his best for you! I can clearly see myself on this guy dang! Aside from the fact that i'm not that handsome xD this love story is getting better and better.

As for the Art/Animation: well this is the main reason why i got hooked in chinese art. The character designs are very mature matches perfectly in the plot, which infact suits my taste. But the most important aspect is the Eyes of their characters, i freaking love it. That is how an eye should be. I have noticed it quite sometime that the only difference on japanese and chinese Art is how they create their eyes. I do not mean for it to be offensive but i'd go for china in this one xD. True China has a long way in creating good quality animes but so far their work have come to the spotlight to be acknowledge by people in many countries who loves anime as a whole.

As for the music i am getting used to it. That's all. Hehe.

As for the whole for now i'd give it 8/10 i still need to see how it ends. Ciao! I'm off for the next part! May Anime Jesus guide you on your conquest.

this was so cliche i almost cried.

the only reason i continued to watch this with my friend was for the majestic lu jinnian.
initial thought: the characters never change their clothes. seriously, why do they have the same 3 outfits? (note: the outfits are ugly)
on a more serious note, why is the editing so confusing. it starts with the two mcs in bed, then goes to high school, then years later, then back to college, then high school, then college. well, you get what i mean. the flashbacks are insanely confusing and the time-skips with absolutely 0 explanation physically hurt me.
the main ... girl's inability to confess is also painfully annoying and the common rom-com misunderstandings are needlessly dramatic.
in total, watch this on discord screen share like i did if you want to have a fun time, but don't expect anything special from lu jinnian and the other irrelevant characters.

ok so i should say that this is my one of my first reviews

i mean ngl- the first season of this anime was really good and i pretty much enjoyed it. it had a good amount of romance (i can tell that the first season is basically the main character's POV)

but- just do not watch the rest of the seasons unless you're able to watch all of them/have all of the episodes and stuff because small spoilers alert: the story gets twisted and messed up which made me really upset and kind of drop the season- but i still kinda want ... to watch the rest to see how the story goes.

yeah so thats all and please please trust me because the reviews get worse when you check the rest of the seasons of this anime.

Little note. I'm reviewing seasons one, two and three. And this will have spoilers because I have searched all over for an actual summary for all seasons and episode descriptions and character summaries and there is nothing. So since nothing helped me, I'm going to help anyone else who decides to watch this pathetic show with spoilers.

The summary for season one is a lie. They are not married, Not in that season. They met under a shelter waiting for the rain to stop. The guy pays the chick no mind but she is quickly head over heels for him and he takes off as soon ... as the rain stops. Then he meets the chick's sister and she likes him but she seems to be a flirt.

Then the next day or sometime later they all meet at school. The chick who met him in the rain is shocked and doesn't get how she never saw him before. She tries to talk to him but he pays her no mind and someone interrupts her anyway.

Basically, the whole first season is about this shy girl who likes this generic guy who comes off as cool and emotionless when he is really just bland and boring.

They all go to different colleges and she does not see this guy for about four years, maybe more. And it looks like she has since gotten married but you never see a husband so I don't know when flashing forward through the years they showed her in a wedding dress.

Anyway, she meets him again and they finally talk and act like friends I guess. He has since become an actor and she is still in school from the looks of it. So then she goes to see him since she has some business in his part of town. They spend time together and she leaves. It looks like he starts to show some very tiny specks of liking her.

So season two. She writes a love letter to him but never gives it to him because in true stalling fashion someone or something always gets in the way and she puts the letter back in her pocket. So this boring guy finally realizes he likes her and when she is graduating college I guess he goes to see her.

Well some little backstory shows that the girl's aunt and the butler don't like him so when he has some guy send the girl flowers, the aunt tells the butler to throw them out and then the aunt tells him that the girl never liked him.

The backstory between these two is confusing from what I saw. The aunt flat out hates this guy and he knows it so why he believes anything she says is beyond me. But then he starts to doubt all the memories and time he spent with the girl and thinks she has been playing him the entire time. Seeing the flowers the butler threw out only further makes him think she hates him or something

Meanwhile, at home, the girl is waiting for him to come to her party and even calls him a million and one times but by then this idiot is brainwashed to where he ignores her calls and thinks she likes his brother and not him.

I skipped a few episodes because it was a repetitive mess of her harassing him by calling. Him ignoring the calls, and constant flashbacks of their time together and meeting in the rain. It's like the story was not progressing. Just focusing on the adult angst at this point. He was constantly sulking acting like his life was over.

Somehow for some reason, they need to get married and this happens at the end of season two. I couldn't watch that episode fully because the little text in English was right on top of the Chinese text. Poor dubbing if you ask me.

But by then, this guy completely hates this girl and she has no idea why but yet she makes the three rules up? Okay.

I only watched the first five episodes of season three. They live together and slept together once when they were drunk but he is mad at her and thinks she used him. Then he has a fever and she goes to him and he sleeps with her again but when he wakes up he thinks she took advantage of him and throws her out.

It's stupid and they are both idiots. They both like each other but he is bitter thinking she has been playing him and she is confused and has no idea why he is acting like a whiny female dog.

I'm just done with this.

Overall: Repulsive.
I am writing this review after seeing the 4 seasons of the anime. It could have been a good anime, but it just gets worse and worse. Why? main character continues to be brutalized in such an insensitive way.

I totally hate anime that tries to convey the image of "it is not rape if they are married", "he is angry", "he had his reasons", "he is not usually like this" and "but he really loves her" to disguise sexual violence.

Story:
Guomin Laogong Dai Huijia tells the story of Qiao, An Hao (a rich young woman) and Lu, Jin Nian (a poor young man who goes ... to the same school). Anime even starts well, shows how both characters like each other but neither of them is able to confess their true feelings, eventually suffering from it.
But after the first season, Qiao, An Hao ends up becoming an insecure girl who is completely ignored by Lu, Jin Nian and yet she defines her entire life (course, career, marriage) because of him. It only gets worse!

Spoilers:
One night they both drink too much and end up sleeping together. the next morning, the guy freaks with her and asks why she took advantage of him (WTH ?!) and she has the opportunity to say that she always liked him (damn, she loved him for 15 years and they live together!) but instead, she says she slept with him out of interest, in exchange for getting a job! I really hate that kind of female character!

as the story progresses things only get worse: the guy is all moralistic, likes her but treats her badly, Lu Jin nian's treatment to An Hao is so terrible that he rapes her when he is upset.

It got to the point where nothing could ever save the history. it became unbearable. I don't even know who I hate the most: him or her?

I went into this thinking it was cute and it would be a good romance story and i got through season 1& 2 and was very disappointed. If you like to be frustrated while watching anime this would be a show for you. If you want romance, skip this one. Throughout the two season the two main characters still don't let each other know how they feel and its very frustrating seeing how they treat each other. I was going to continue watching until the last scene where she basically lies to the dude and digs herself into a huge hole of misery and i ... got tired of it. The show should have a tragedy tag because its terrible what the two characters are going through. I was going to watch the third season but its not all out yet that I can find and I read someones comment about the characters still being clueless to how they each feel and I'm just ready for a happy ending. I saw there was going to be a fourth season so maybe when i see a final season i'll watch and catch up then.

Right.. where do I start? Firstly, I am not used to Chinese anime, they lack some depth to some of their plots, at times too over dramatic and not giving a strong backbone for their story. But that aside, let's talk about this.. anime.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

I am not too pleased with 11 minutes per episode for an anime which honestly had a lot of potential instead of rushing through the series. Is this a series..? I don't even know because the ending left me with an uncomfortable, dissatisfied and distasteful cliff hanger which felt more of a discontinuation rather than ending it with either a happy ... ending or an o-k closure with Jinnian and An Hao.

If you're into telenovela's or soap opera's with ridiculous endings.. then this is the anime for you, if not.. I'd advice not to watch it as it felt incomplete.

Firstly, there has been DOZENS of times in which An Hao could have confessed her feelings Jinnian but she just doesn't! She just changes the subject and waits over 5 years to confess. She's a really sweet character with no backbone.

Jinnian plays the lead male who seems to be a little "tsundere" with a less aggressive personality. There was no explanation on who he really was until the ending which he worked his way up to become someone famous and worthy of An Hao, comes up with tons of reasons why he isn't able to stay in touch and leaves the poor girl hanging.

Yup.. they're a matchmake from heaven.

Lastly, why would her own sister set her up that way? There was NO explanation on if her older sister was the one meant to be married to Jinnian's older "half brother?". She just holds her cellphone and lets her aunt listen to An Hao's love letter.

I do however hope there will be a 2nd season as I'd want to see more effort on both the characters and their family backgrounds rather than leaving the viewers guessing without any hints or facts.

Overall though, this series was more of a past-timer than something you'd wait a week for to watch. Art and music is decent, dubbing could've been better.

I do hope there will be a season 2 as the manga/comic actually has more story to this than what we've watched on this anime. Fingers crossed maybe?

I'd hate to not see a proper continuation to this depressing cliff hanger..

Okay so this is only my second Chinese anime that I've watched and I dropped the first one I watched like a hot potato. This one caught my attention and I watched the entire thing in a day because 1) it was short 2) my anger and curiosity over what was going to happen next got the best of me. I have to admit I think this show was kinda good I never read the actual story yet, but I will get to it. When I first read this description I was curious and watched the show, but the characters kept on getting me mad ... by the way they kept acting it was ridiculous and the main guy I just couldn't tell for the life of me if he actually liked the girl because of his actions and poker face and normally I can tell even if they act like jerks, but the entire time I kept questioning angrily whether he liked her or not. The characters actions were beyond annoying, but I think pure curiosity is what kept me going with this show, but I suggest waiting until the second season comes out in May because they left off on a huge cliffhanger and now I'm just confused and angry about the ending. But yes I will watch the second season because I need to know what happens.

Where the hell are boys like Lu Jinnian in this society? Shy, sweet and gracious bishie, kyaa~! If you are a girl, who likes pretty boys, you can't miss this.

I already watched the season 2 and read the manhua. Season 1 is mainly from the point of view of An Hao, but in season 2 you can look forward for Jin Nian's part. There is season 3 as well, but noone didn't translate it yet. From my point of view I think, that there will be more than 10 seasons, if it will be according the story of manhua.

I fell in love with the main ... couple and I'm glad that I have found this anime. But I'm literally disgusted with, how they cutted the end of the story... However, the manhua and anime is different. It's better to start with manhua and then watch anime, since the manhua isn't as detailed as anime and also, the anime is very confusing and some of the scenes ain't even in the manhua. Without manhua I didn't know, who is the auntie Xu and even didn't understand the beginning of the anime. So, if you wanna start with this anime, I recommend you to read it first (I think that the anime is based on approx 13 chapters of the manhua).

After very long time I liked some romance anime, what's a success since I'm not lover of sweet loves tories. But some of the informations are missing in the anime. Who is auntie Xu? What is Jinnian's past?

What did I enjoy? The CV. They couldn't choose better voices for the characters. I could listen to Jinnian's voice everyday. The soundtrack isn't audible much, but the emotions are there. Especially you can feel sadness. Since the manhua has short dialogues, I liked the prolonging of the story as well.

What did disappoint me... I wanted to write one thing that disappoints me, but in the time I didn't know, that in manhua it takes even more time, so I can't blame the anime because of this :D Though I don't like that the couple have to go through countless tragedies... It's depressing, so I don't recommend this story to the people, who love very sweet and predictable love stories.
