I watched this movie as someone who comes from the Anime and hasn't read the Manga.
In the movie, the first few minutes show you some events that have occurred between the Anime and this movie (it has been covered in the Manga probably) in a fast forward way. The events seem interesting, but unfortunately, the Anime doesn't cover them.
At first, I was disappointed and thought that I wouldn't enjoy the movie that much due to the missed parts, but I was wrong.
I personally enjoyed this movie more than the previous Anime. I liked the more mature Tetsu. And the movie visuals were great and pleasing.

I am so fanatic about Shinsengumi, I had read Shimada Kai and Nagakura Shinpachi diaries and I just love to watch anime with adaptation of their lives. I really love this movie, I cried a lot. I can't help myself of thinking although this is and adaptation and have a lot of ficcion, I always think on their real lives and deaths so I cried so hard on this. Great movie, I think it's better than the anime and I hope to see the rest of the story someday. The characters were really well portaied, the animation was great too.
