Modern reimaginations of ancient Chinese tales. The focus is a blend of action and comedy, and the 3D CGI style makes for quite similar artstyle for both of these movies. Both have a similar vibe.

They are both inspired by Chinese literature and folklore. They both happen in a fantasy world with rich Chinese cultural influence. They both deal with a character's redemption and self realization through rescuing another. Da Yu Hai Tang is more oriented toward young adult. Monkey King: Hero is Back is more family friendly.

Both anime are adaptations of the novel Journey to the West, focusing on the character of Monkey King. Apart from their age and length, the two anime have a similar spirit, although Son Gokuu Monogatari is a more traditional adaptation, while Hero is Back has some tweaks to the original story.

Both anime are based on Wu Cheng'en's classical novel Journey to the West and depict the Monkey King's (Son Goku) journey. Both have tweaks to the novel's story, but still stay true to its theme and atmosphere. Also, both anime have tons of humor and martial arts action.
