Konusoba is very popular this season, and I see it being recommended left right and sideways. For this reason I am actually taking the time to write my first review of an anime. Normally I don't have strong opinions on any anime, but this show's reception has been so completely against the grain of my thoughts on it I felt like I'd throw in my 2 cents.
Minor spoilers below but it shouldn't matter because the show is so predictable you can't spoil anything.
Lets start with the characters. The MC is your standard 'just came out of the cookie cutter' NEET. He plays video games, he's
...
a nice guy, he can't seem to get a break, and he's prone to misunderstandings and awkward circumstances. They really took a lot of risks with this guy's character I'll tell ya! Also he's a pervert. Shocker.
Every single other major character in the story is female and serves to be made fun of as sexual objects. Every single instance of plot between MC and the lead lady takes the form of her being portrayed as a money wasting useless person. Her personality traits are being spineless, being whiny, wasting money, and getting drunk.
The other female characters all serve as the butt ends of jokes over and over again. Except the only two jokes they make are 'this little girl likes explosion magic and its inefficient, haha!' and 'this other chick is a masochist, haha!'
Thats it. Thats the show folks. It's a perfect rotation of:
MC boy has something unfortunate happen to him!
Lead lady does something greedy and is portrayed as a money waster!
Followed by one of the two supporting ladies being portrayed as a sexual object, generally in the form of their panties or them doing something stupid. Rinse and repeat for 20 minutes an episode. HAHAHAHA COMEDY GOLD.
Thats all this show has to it. There's no sustenance, there's no real plot, the MC gets thrown into this whole new world and we have yet to even see any world building involved. We have no idea what the world looks like, what the rules are here, and etc. Which brings us to the writing.
Lets talk about Konu's writing, or lack thereof?
Sometimes, the world goes by video game rules. Sometimes its just a normal world. The line is so blurry it doesnt exist, and the writers randomly throw in video game rules that never existed before.
There are times when they suddenly mention "Oh I levelled up!" when the principle of exp/exp grinding/levels was NEVER MENTIONED BEFORE IN THE PLOT. Wat?
The MCs spend the first episode working a real job and making cash in order to get by, then once they switch into adventuring mode because the writers said so. And yet, at a certain point in the plot they lose the ability to go on adventures, and become strapped for cash.
Instead of going back to working normal jobs, they just... do nothing and complain about the lack of funds. Despite the fact 4 episodes later it was made evident manual labor pays more than well enough for them to get by and blow money on booze every night, suddenly the act of going on 2 adventures means going back temporarily to manual labor isn't a possibility. So much so that they don't even address this.
There isn't even a 'What if we just went back to work our old jobs?' 'No way! We'll have to think of something else!' convo. It's just glazed right over because, that would actually be a real solution to the problem as opposed to the plot that follows...
The writing is full of terrible writing like this. Nothing makes sense, the rules are often made up on the spot and never mentioned previously, then discarded once done with and never mentioned again.
In terms of art, its got nothing special going. It looks about the same as all the other meh anime out these last few years and has nothing glamorous going on. There are even a decent chunk of magical girl style scenes frequently reused to shave down the budget.
Same goes for sound. The music isn't particularly enthralling and feels about as generic as everything else in this show.
Overall I give it a 5/10. This show is exactly what I expected it to be. A cash grab at the ever growing in popularity 'Guy gets stuck in a video game' genre. Except unlike SAO this show has no art to ride on the back of, and unlike NGNL and friends this show has no writing to speak for either.
They took the model of the other successful shows in the genre, ripped them off, cheaped out on art/directing/writing/music/sound and just threw sexual innuendos and panties at it and... it worked. Everyone is eating this crock up for breakfast.
Which makes me embarrassed to see happen.

PROS (+) =
*Characters are really well done, has great personalities and funny in their own ways, i love all 4 of them (especially megumin) *Superb comedy ,seriously.. i haven't laughed this hard since Gintama and Nichijou, even cried of laughter two or three times. *Plot is fun. *The male protagonist's comments, oh and btw he's really likeable and smart, i love him. *OP and especially ED is on spot. *And of course= the 'voice acting'... god, i guess i'm exaggerating a bit but main characters voice actings are on spot if you ask me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *It's not actually a Harem show, it may look like one. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni shukufuku wo!
Well, ever wanted to watch an anime about a teenage boy who wants to go into a different universe and have an adventure like on the RPG games he plays? Look no further than Sword Art Online if you want poor character development... Or watch this tasteful anime about a teenage boy named Kazuma Satou who shockingly dies and meets up with a god named Aqua. See gives him a chance to have an adventure in a parallel world. He also gets to take one thing, whether it is a weapon, ability or someone with him. Thinking hard he finds ... Mar 30, 2016
Well, I wanna start with the basics. This story have a objective and that is that you need to have a smile at the end of each chapter along with the definition of "LUCK":
.-The pros: Even if you feel a random aura covering the "plot", it's very organized, so the jokes and stupidities that appear, appear in the best moment of all (Laugh guaranteed at a 75%). If you love RPGs, MMOs and JRPGs, this is your world where all the things you never do in your way to the end-game come and well, the protagonist gonna remember all the stuff that its coming ... Are you tired of watching the same TV tropes being used over and over with barely any change whatsoever? Angry from watching the seemingly infinite amount of uninspiring harems that flood the new seasons? Bored from watching spineless protagonists that have as much personality as a 2D cardboard cutout? Well then my friend, KonoSuba is the show for you!
The story follows Satou Kazuma, an Otaku and gamer who dies trying to save a girl. He ends up in front of a rude goddess called Aqua who gives him the choice between going to heaven or going into ... Mar 26, 2016
This anime is great. At first glance, looking at the setting of guy surrounded by cute girls in a dungeon RPG fantasy, it makes you think of Shitty Art Online, or maybe that Dungeon-something anime with the big-boobed goddess. But this, this is not like those sad excuses for animes. It was actually enjoyable, it was funny, it was entertaining, and you will rarely cringe or get bored while watching it. Main thing is, this is primarily a comedy anime, so if you're looking for a serious anime then this is not the anime for you.
The characters were really great. A tsukkomi protagonist is accompanied ... Mar 30, 2016
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo is my version of being a hardcore gamer, dying, and going to a land where Every Video game in existence is there for free and every game that ever will exist. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo, is all around an amazing anime. As you watch you can't help but fall in love with the characters, Megumin and her explosions, Darkness and her masochist ways, Aqua and her.... failure of being a goddess. Most of all you can't help but fall in love with Kazuma.
The story was also Amazing, as was the volume and Art. This Anime in my ... Jan 19, 2019
I finally decided to watch it as I kept seeing memes of it everywhere and I wanted to know the fuss, but Konosuba is the first show I’ve watched where I can’t fathom its popularity.
There’s shows that I’ve disliked which are immensely popular, but I at least understood what they were going for. I don’t even particularly dislike Konosuba, I just don’t understand its acclaim within the anime community, as I don’t feel it fulfills any particular niche. I went into this show expecting something that was kind of a cross between Steven Universe and Avatar, with how I kept seeing these “Aqua most useless ... Jul 12, 2016
I have a very simple requirement for anime. If it did not make me cringe, I would call it a good anime that is worth watching. This one, well, THIS one has made me cringed so many times I fell like stabbing everyone involved in it.
The story: It's a typical setting. MC goes to another world and do some shit after he died. Pathetically. If I was in his shoes I would just die a second time, period. When he got there, he expected a grand adventure and awesome teammates. Spoilers. He got a taste of the real world and shitty teammates, whom might I ... Nov 24, 2016
Anime is a production.
As of late, there are few genres of anime (aside from the ever popular time travel) that I've seen take off as much as the MMO/Fantasy RPG/Living inside a video game. 2014 had more SAO, "No Game No Life" and "Log Horizon", 2015 had such hits as "Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?" (Danmachi), "Overlord", and "Bikini Warriors". Given that many anime consumers in Japan (keep in mind, this is who anime is made for, despite the odd trend to the contrary) also consume video games- it makes sense from a demographic and market share ... I wonder how God views us human beings. Staring upon his magnificent throne of creation watching as pathetic mortals quarrel over the most mundane of topics, how he watches us wage bloody wars to no avail. Perhaps he despises us as much as we despise ourselves. I used to be a proponent of such a line of thinking until my eyes gazed upon a sight so beautiful, even the most majestic of angels would cower in its sight.
Konosuba: Gods blessing on this wonderful world. Do not take the title to be simply a light metaphorical jab or an ironic statement of what is to come ... May 11, 2020
***Spoiler for first five minutes***
One of the worst isekai fantasy anime I've seen so far. It's supposed to be a comedy but I didn't chuckle even once. Even the very first "joke", where the main character learns he ended up in the isekai world because he died from shock after unnecessarily trying to save a girl from getting hit by a tractor who wasn't at all in danger and had both his parents and the doctors laughing at the sad way he died, fell absolutely flat, both in execution and comedic value. It only gets worse as you learn he is an absolute prick who ... Jan 7, 2017
"Konosuba is like that one comedian that makes some really satisfying jokes, but then drills some of the weaker material into the ground before getting drenched in rotten tomatoes until finally doing something new at the end." -Me, whenever you read this.
It seems as if an anime critic's mortal enemy isn't a badly written original story or even a story that is cliched to the bone, but rather Light Novels/Light Novel anime adaptations and Isekai (taken to a fantasy world) series. LNs and their adaptations often consist of a plain or terrible main character surrounded by two-dimensional love interests for his harem, in which he ... Aug 29, 2023
I don't think I've been more let down by an anime. Watched it after glowing reviews on reddit and a high MAL score, so I expected good things. However, the story just falls flat, and none of the characters are interesting enough to make up for it. The show is just made up entirely of crude, lewd jokes and overused tropes - jiggly boobs, panty stealing, sexual harassment etc. I guess that's my punishment for taking recommendations of reddit - should've known they're all just horny teenage boys.
The MC is just the most unlikeable person - selfish, annoying, money-driven, horny. Megumin and Aqua are annoying ... Jun 27, 2018
Absolutely terrible.
I thought this show had some degree of promise, in both character design / development and comedy. It falls flat abruptly in all departments. There is not one constitution that this anime does well in besides the average art design. Story : Rubbish. Fight demon king, does the cliche '' I choose you'' option, picking out the deity presenting the weapons. Who could have seen that coming - clearly not the goddess,as she was obliged to conform to his request whilst in a state of shock. The adventure begins. ... Oct 1, 2020
konosuba is the most overhyped anime i have ever seen. I have heard people rave about how its so funny and how its not like all the other isekai anime. While it is slightly different to most isekai anime, it was a huge let down when it comes to comedy.
Story: 3/10 It's literally an isekai but dude doesn't become a hero. It's nothing ground breaking and I would say its less original than most anime out there. It doesn't take a mastermind to come up with an idea like this. Art: 3/10 The characters are drawn kinda weird and sometimes the faces are like a weird mix ... Mar 17, 2016
KonoSuba is a strange animal. Literally every trope it contains is fatal and it shouldn't work at all on paper. It includes, and is built on, an MC that tickles the complexes of the socially incapacitated Japanese 'Hiki-neet's, a huge female main cast(including two...or one who hasn't appeared yet), mostly cheap visuals, generic generic and generic backgrounds, standard Boke-tsukkomi combinations, an obviously unnatural focus on the roles the MCs partake in and paper thin characters that blatantly rely on their profile personalities to interact. Definitely it does.
And yet, surprise surprise, most of the time it DOES work. All of that is down to the producers, ... Dec 21, 2020
I. did. not. laugh.
Seriously this anime made me bored, it's like every generic nameless long titled anime and yet this one seems to be popular. I honestly have no memorable memory of this anime, normally I'd at least have one memorable moment but this one draws my mind blank. The music is forgettable, the art is forgettable, everything was forgettable. But what I do remember is how stale it was, the jokes were repetitive and were just sexual innuendos. It felt like the jokes were made by an immature adult or a paedophile. Instead of this being a comedy it was a nightmare, the main ... May 24, 2019

It's an isekai. Something you expect already: mc dies gets to a fantastical world. It was supposed to be funny, but the humor was crude and poorly thought, besides being forced. I think it tried to copy Gintama style comedy, while following Slayers, while following the harem recipe of Aah Megami-sama, while being isekai, but because it was, I think, rushed for some reasons, it didn't succeeded. ( good for nothing hero gets thrown into a magical world which follows basic RPG rules, the party is made of sorceresses, and here it is supposed to ... |
