Synopsis

Ren Homura has just moved back to his hometown of Kaminohara, but he isn't able to remember much about the time he spent there other than vague flashbacks. When he retrieves his cell phone which he had sent to a shop for repairs, he finds that a mysterious game titled “Monster Strike” has been installed on it. Unaware of its purpose or how it got there, Ren decides to open it, an action that will change his life forever as he finds himself suddenly attacked by a strange man.

Now trapped on the roof of his school which strangely has been designated as a "stage," Ren is shocked to see the man summon a realistic monster from the game, one that is more than capable of inflicting damage on a human. His only chance of getting out of this situation alive is by summoning the dragon Oragon, who tells Ren that he will crush the opposing monster for him. Unfortunately, it turns out that Oragon is a tiny dragon that is completely useless!

Story:
The story is not interesting and almost looks like less inspired version of other pocket monsters game anime in that genre. This may not be as disappointing if you came to this anime through the original game, which had a very flexible premise that could lead to many different designing principles. Seeing them play it safe and take the most standard can be rather insulting. Even by ignoring this, the anime does not represent the game well and gives out false impressions of some mechanics.

Art:
The design and art style is very similar to the game, which can go from decent to great design. Thanks to the design and style, it does render 3D models better than other monster based show with CGI like Berserk. However, it does not go far than that and the animation only peaks in fights that does not last long.

Sound:
The audio department has only two aspects that remotely stands out: The voice actors and ending theme. The voice actors have done a decent job and try to make the character sound less inspired that they already are. The Ending theme is decent, but it’s every rock ending theme you heard. The cover of Queen’s We Will Rock You is not my favourite. Maybe it’s because I’m too fond of the original.

Characters:
The human cast is underwhelming. Those character that starts interesting lose their touch and those who did not becomes at least entertaining. The only one that I could think up that does not fit in either side is Minami. Minami is the equivalent of the 90s kid who kept shooting out catch phrases and pop culture references in any chance she got. Or in other word, a character that is likely to piss off old anime fans.
The monster cast is more interesting and they are probably the reason why you come back to this show.
The villains are mostly generic as they come. Nothing more to say about them.

Enjoyment:
When the focus was on the monster, it was entertaining. When it the focus was on the humans, only some supporting characters could hold entertainment to some degree. The humour was entertaining when it went meta on the first episodes, but it disappeared afterwards.

Overall:
Monster Strike is a decent anime series that plays as any adaption of a popular social digital game. If you don’t regard the script, execution of said premise, the references, boring soundtrack, the misguided direction, the false impression of the source material, the shallow protagonist and even more shallow antagonist, you find that this is decent enough for you who wants to watch a 10 minutes’ episode anime on YouTube. I mean the design and action was good, or pretty much when the series focused on the monsters.

I'm a big fan of the game and I like to play it every day, but I didn't feel the same for the anime. So let's get into it. STRIKE SHOT!!!!!

First of all the plot. It starts out with our protagonist Ren finding an app called monster strike on his phone and being dragged into playing the game. Now it works like the game, but it's brought into reality so there. The plot kinda changes here and there like early in the series, it was about finding out who possesses these random strikers into attacking our protagonist and his friends. Then it changes to saving one of Aoi's friends from his mother(Aoi is one of Ren's friends), and at the end it's about getting back memories. While I did talk about it a lot, it's not my problem with the anime. The thing that's wrong with the anime is that it feels very rushed. You have the battles in this anime lasting very short like 5-7 minutes each. Not all of them are like that but a lot are. Everything just goes by so fricken fast and you can't really savor the enjoyment. Also instead of each episode being like your typical 23 minute anime episode, it's only like 10 minutes (including the ending). If you total up the time of all 51 episodes of this anime, it won't be longer than just an average 24 episode anime.

Next is the characters. Half of them are just ok, but the other half are just sooooo annoying. Minami is one of Ren's friends he meets on his quest or somethin. Her personality is kind of annoying and not to mention her voice, which is also annoying. There was also this brown haired guy who looks like a gay version of the protagonist from Cowboy Bebop(idk what his name is). He was by far the most annoying character. His personality is just sooo annoying. He's like an anime incarnation of spongebob or somethin like that. There are other annoying side characters like this one guy who is girl crazy, and another guy who always talks about his six pack. They were more useless than annoying. Now you probably want me to talk about the non- annoying characters. Ren, our main protagonist, is not annoying, but he's kinda cliche like Kirito. Aoi is mostly pretty normal just helping out in the situations and caring for her friends. Another one of Ren's friends he meets, his name is Akira, is a pretty clever serious guy. Probably also a little stubborn at first, but he changes. There is also Oragon, who is actually a small red dragon which is the first monster Ren acquired from playing monster strike. He's a little funny since he likes getting complimented by Aoi. He also loves popcorn for some reason.

I actually want to talk about some of the monster characters that Ren and Aoi acquire later on, cause I really wanted to see them with character development. It's sad cause they barely even have any dialogue, and they get practically no character development. I would actually have preferred if the creators of Monster Strike actually used the characters in the game, and make them like the main characters and have them challenge other characters in the game, for example Izanami instead of just being another anime based off a game like Yugioh and Pokémon.

I mostly talked about the characters and plot, and so I don't have much to say for the rest of the traits. The art was actually good, and the occasional CGI in the fights worked fine. The voice acting was alright. I really did enjoy the action scenes, but they were short lived.

So to sum it up, it was kind of annoying to watch, but it ain't too bad. Rushed plot and annoying characters are what made this anime not as entertaining as it could have been, but if you're a Monster Strike fan, feel free to check it out.

This is a really decent anime, not the greatest, but enjoyable on many levels, it's based on a phone app that is kinda like marbels but with monsters and different powers and effects. It quickly becomes less about the actual game, and more of a anime, but it worked for me.

Story: New kid comes to town and finds out about a fad game in the area, but for some reason it feels like he used to live there, but he can't remember it. The story works, it has mysteries involved in it that slowly get revealed though some things read more

This is by far one of the dorkiest shows I have seen. For the first few episodes, you have absolutely no clue what is going on. And it really doesn't get much better.
First of all, the episodes are only 8 minutes long (though in all reality the episodes are only 6 minutes long. 2 minutes of nonsense). Due to this, there is little time for character development. There is no real story until you hit about episode 12. This anime feels like a mixture between Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh, yet the episodes are a 3rd shorter than they should be!
