Synopsis

A short movie produced by Yasuji Murata. Based on the Japanese fairy tale Hanasaka Jiijii, also called Hanasaka Jiisan.

A kind old man and his wife dig up the ground where their dog is barking, and find koban (oval gold coins formerly used in Japan) there.

Background

The 28th of the Athena Film Library educational film series produced by Yokohama Cinema Shokai. A 35mm version and a 16mm version were released. The existing print is a 16mm Sakura Graph version released by Konishiroku Honten. The 35mm original version is one 375 meter reel and lasts 14 min. (24fps). This film is a considerably shortened version. The outline of the story provided at the time suggests that in addition to intertitles, several elements are missing from this version, including a scene in which a pet dog chases a black cat and a story about how the Blossom Man earns his reputation.

Now this was completly fine film. Sure it lacked voice acting, which made the story a bit confusing, specially the ending, and there are some weird jump cuty. but it's still quit good. And yes the animation can be creepy at some points, but again, dosen't ruin the enjoyment that much. The characters are done quit good, and despite what I said about the story and lack of voice acting, the story is quit enjoyable and easy to follow. And dunno if orriginally it was short or if part of it got lost through time and that's why it has weird jump cuts.

SPECIAL NOTE OF INFORMATION: I noticed yesterday a flaw in my review when i went ahead to watch this anime. That there was a striking resemblance to the 1917 version i saw. While the 1917 version did not have the cover shot image i silently dismissed that as an error of either destroyed film or wrong picture. Somewhere, in my sub conscious i knew the truth but thanks to a friend i now know that i saw at that time a poorly cut/restored version of this film. Thankfully the place i found this piece no longer exists for now but may ...
