Lets be fair here. There's no point of someone who hates fan service or the Series to bother watching this becuase they'll just hate it. But it's not bad.
I'm not going to go into details about the story, since there's not much but I'll go over the main good and bads and you can watch it and judge yourself, though I do recommend watching the game and main series.
Roles for the 10 secondary characters, some of whom are better than the primary ones.
The graphic are still very good.
Pretty good to watch when you're bored.
Funny at times
No real story to it (though since its and OVA
you would expect much)
MAIN BAD: Breasts. Now I like the show along with the fanservice because although the fanservice was there in a big way, I wouldn't watch an episode with the only though of it from the bouncing or flashes. But the non-censorship was unnecessary, nobody asked for it, it brings unneeded fans to the show and puts a scar on it already hurt name.
If it wasn't for the 10 extra characters then this would've been a 4-5.
Senran Kagura is a video game series of the hack-and-slash/beat-em-up variety made by Kenichiro Takaki, who I have honestly grown to hate, seeing as making 3D women is his way to get off. Anyways, as you play the games, you'll notice that there actually is a story there. You get to know the characters, their pasts, their personalities, etc. And you'll also notice boobs, but don't worry, because it hardly gets in the way of the story.
Yes, the games are honestly very good, not masterpieces, but they're good.
The fans, however... How do I put this... They're moronic, fanservice-obsessed
manchildren who constantly shout: "LIFE AND HOMETOWN!" "LOL BOOBS" "FAPpING TIME" like they're 12 years old or something. And for ages, they've wanted the games uncensored. Something that the masses can cap to. And it's because of Takaki and his idiotic followers, they made this awful chunk of shit that never needed to exist.
Story - 0
Let's look at the games story.... And just shred that, and make an entirely new story that makes no sense whatsoever! Yes, this "Senran Kagura" OVA was bundled with the original Japanese retail game, and didn't feature the new characters or the game's story, in any way... That's retarded. Okay, so from what I hear, the Gessen girls play Rock-Paper-Scissors with their breasts (something that was NEVER DONE IN THE GAMES, EVER) and they go to the beach, where they do beach things...and Ryona becomes a giant in the end. Yeah, I spoiled it, they don't care about their source material, I won't care about their shitty OVA.
Animation - 3
Well, since Studio Artland is busy with... Not animating Reborn!, they outsourced the animation to that one studio known for that show where the guy gets powers by breast milk, and it looks kinda garbage, not the worst thing in here, mind you.
Sound - 6
No memorable OST, but the original voice cast did return, even if it was for a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE piece of shit like this, but they did return, so, yeah.
Character - 1
Looking for deep, meaningful story arcs? Want action keeping you on the edge of your seat? Well, congratulations, you'll either have to buy SK:B or SK:SV because this shit ain't here! This OVA may have been called the Ryona show, because that's what it feels like! Other characters such as Katsuragi or Haruka, or even Mirai get like, one line of dialogue, and even then, Asuka, who is supposed to be the MAIN CHARACTER OF THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE is barely focused on, it's either Ryona, Ryobi, Shiki or Yumi taking up the screentime. Ugh.
Enjoyment - None
Overall, this OVA is nothing but pandering from the most pathetic person in the video game industry today. I watched the actual anime before finding out it was a video game series, and that obviously didn't have Takaki's influence. This OVA, however is mindless pandering to the "LIFE AND HOMETOWN" and "DXD IS BEST ANIMU" morons. Takaki, go back to fucking pillows, and writing Ikki Tousen, cause this should be a wake-up call, you can't fucking write, and you need to grow up and get you head out the shitter.
Well, it's Senran Kagura. I'm not going to bother explaining what it's about and assume that you have some prior knowledge of the series here. Young women who call themselves shinobi fight each other and lose their clothes in the process. Classic light-hearted ecchi. I like the franchise, I enjoy the characters, and I was excited for this release.
The problem with this OVA for me is very simple though - there are so many characters in SK that when you try to condense the cast into a 24m OVA, each of them can be afforded a scant few moments of screentime
and, as a result, the cast is reduced even further beyond the stereotypes they already represent. Characters that can actually be funny in the games (Ryoubi/Ryouna, Katsuragi, Murasaki, Yagyu/Hibari) still throw out their same gags, but it just feels a little lifeless and forced here. There's no room for the jokes to land. I almost wish they had chosen to focus on a single school for this OVA instead of the full cast for that reason.
That's not me saying that this OVA needed a better story or something, by the way. What introduction does girls stripping each other until they blush and say "KYAAAA!" really need? But one of the hallmarks of the SK franchise (if not the fundamental core) has always been the characters themselves, who lean so heavily into tropes that it becomes a form of parody. Without the witty personalities of the cast, much of the charm of SK is lost on me, and it ends up feeling like a shell of what I actually enjoy about the series (although maybe I should be expecting as much from a short OVA like this).
All that said, the art is great, the VAs are fantastic (when they get a line to speak) and the fan service is even more over the top than it is in the games. Nipples can be shown here so expect to see tons of them (although I will be honest - was kind of hoping for some more variety in types of nipples, tiny/pink over and over loses its impact and, imo, further diminishes the uniqueness of the individual girls). So if skin is what you're looking for, you will find it. Just don't expect the same sharpness in terms of writing that you would normally find in other SK media, and if your best girl isn't Yumi, prepare to groan when she gets side-lined.
