Synopsis

Eighteen-year-old Tsukasa Mizugaki has failed his college entrance exams, but after pulling some strings, he manages to land a job at the Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. SAI Corp is responsible for the creation of "Giftias"—highly advanced androids which are almost indiscernible from normal humans. However, unlike humans, Giftias have a maximum lifespan of 81,920 hours, or around nine years and four months. Terminal Service One, the station Tsukasa was assigned to, is responsible for collecting Giftias that have met their expiration date, before they lose their memories and become hostile.

Promptly after joining Terminal Service One, Tsukasa is partnered with a beautiful Giftia named Isla. She is a Terminal Service veteran and considered the best in Giftia retrievals, contrary to her petite figure and placid nature. Time is fleeting though, and Tsukasa must come to terms with his feelings for Isla before her time is up. No matter how much someone desires it, nothing lasts forever.

Plastic Memories is MORE than a typical love story. It shows the fragile nature of human life, symbolized by robots with short lifespans compared to normal humans. It gives the audience some consideration for those who may have a short time left to live and how to make the most out of it. Even though some parts of the anime do have some cliches, all the characters have some supportive capabilities toward each other to create a bond that gives the audience a sense of community. The first episode already gives you a sense of how the harsh reality functions, but it still packs a ...

Mixed Feelings
Plastic Memories takes the basic idea of disposable synthetic humans from Blade Runner with a predetermined lifespan but moeblobified and hyper-emotional, so they cry all the time, eat cupcakes to drive away the existential dread, and become engulfed in loads of comedy and romantic scenarios. I doubt anyone really questioned the concept strongly with Blade Runner because the idea seemed to be that they were still in the experimental phase and were primarily being used for labor. They weren't adorable moeblobs fetching you tea. Here, they're like home companions, as shown with several older people who own them in the first episode, along with many ...

Plastic Memories tries to tell a very serious story in the dumbest way possible, through very anime-esque tropes. Isla is the shy girl, Tsukasa is the very safely played dense protagonist who is polite and gets embarrassed, Michiru is the tsundere, so on and so forth. This usually isn't a problem when you're writing a trashy harem just to sell its porn afterwards. However, it is a problem when you want me to take the story as a very serious drama.

The show TRIES to tug on your heartstrings, but it's not possible to get attached to very cliche tropes. When you want me to be ...
