Wangan Midnight

Both are Based on Street-Racing, But Initial D is based on Mountain Drifting and Wangan Midnight is Based on Motorway Street-Racing. 

Two of the best anime series about cars you can find! Similar characters and hardcore realism. Both main characters are highschoolers and drive a car which unexpectedly defeats newer models in races (Fairlady Z in Wangan Midnight, AE86 Trueno in Initial D). There's a lot of real life models showcased accurately in both series (particularly the Nissan Skyline GT-R). Wangan Midnight was animated by A.C.G.T (the studio behind Initial D Fourth Stage) and based on a manga by Michiharu Kusunoki that was serialised in Weekly Young Magazine (the same magazine as Initial D, but debuting three years earlier). While Initial D's story involves drifting on the mountain pass, Wangan Midnight's story involves speed on the Wangan, part of the Shuto Expressway in Greater Tokyo. The series follows Takumi as he races against other street racers and develops his racing skills. On the other hand, "Wangan Midnight" centers around the story of Akio Asakura, a young man who becomes obsessed with a legendary highway racer named the "Devil Z." He purchases an old Nissan Fairlady Z and begins modifying it to compete against other racers on the Tokyo expressway. Both series have their own unique style of racing and focus on different aspects of the racing world. If you enjoy intense and thrilling races, then both series are definitely worth checking out. Wangan used the be THE spot in Japan for street racers to gather and race. The major differences between Initial D and Wangan Midnight is that Initial D focuses much more on the driver, their technique, and driving styles to become the fastest racer. Wangan Midnight focuses much more on the car, its mechanics, parts, and tuning process to become the fastest racer. Although both have some parts that over lap as Initial D do sometimes talk about tuning and Wangan's drivers are noted to be skilled. read more
