Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku

Many years before becoming the famed captain of the Survey Corps, a young Levi struggles to survive in the capital's garbage dump, the Underground. As the boss of his own criminal operation, Levi attempts to get by with meager earnings while aided by fellow criminals, Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church. With little hope for the future, Levi accepts a deal from the anti-expedition faction leader Nicholas Lobov, who promises the trio citizenship aboveground if they are able to successfully assassinate Erwin Smith, a squad leader of the Survey Corps.

As Levi and Erwin cross paths, Erwin acknowledges Levi's agility and skill and gives him the option to either become part of the expedition team, or be turned over to the Military Police, to atone for his crimes. Now closer to the man they are tasked to kill, the group plans to complete their mission and save themselves from a grim demise in the dim recesses of their past home. However, they are about to learn that the surface world is not as liberating as they had thought and that sometimes, freedom can come at a heavy price.

Based on the popular spin-off manga of the same name, Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku illustrates the encounter between two of Shingeki no Kyojin's pivotal characters, as well as the events of the 23rd expedition beyond the walls.

This was the by far the best part of any outside content from the mainline show. I felt attached greatly to Levi and his friends in just the two episodes we get. It builds on Levi's character greatly, especially after finishing season 1 and further after season 3. The pacing never felt rushed or too slow and the story felt believable and was highly emotional. Very on par with the main seasons. It is the only outside content from Attack on Titan that feels like you walk away from it learning more about a character and even elevates main series scenes.

Attack on Titan No Regrets is a 50 minute long OVA about Levi's backstory. It's pretty high quality and Levi is an important character so knowing has backstory does add quite a bit to the main storyline.

The story of the OVA is relatively compact and only a small part of Levi's life is shown, this being how Levi met one of his friends, how Levi ended up accepting a big commission and how Levi ended up joining the survey corps. The important characters are Erwin, Levi and two of Levi's friends.

The animation is good and is in the same style as the main anime ... and of similar quality. The voice acting is the same as in the main anime but some of the music choices were a bit odd.

Overall this OVA is definitely worth watching since it's both simply high quality with an interesting story and it adds to the main storyline by explaining part of Levi's backstory.

Mixed Feelings

While this OVA has the same great presentation as the main series and is watchable in its own right, it falls flat in other important departments. While we do get a little more background into the underground city and Levi's past it’s not an in-depth look and felt glossed over. The two new characters introduced as part of Levi's gang are generic, doomed characters whose fate is blatantly obvious right from the start. When some familiar faces show up, they are just used to move the story along and not provide any meaningful input. This is a two-episode OVA that would have worked better as ... a 5-10-minute flash back.
