Why isn't there any rewiew on this ani-spé ? I'm not used to write reviews but I need to do it for Pokemon.
Pokemon The strongest mega evolution is a side story of the XY series that links it to the sequel "XY&Z" (and gives some fanservice for ORAS hype). It introduces a new main character, Alan, first dark and problematic main chara of Pokemon (laughs.). He used to be Prof Platane's assistant but began to travel on his own so that he can learn more about mega evolutions, and be stronger, that kind of things. I won't spoil too much but when he was a
moment of hesitation, he made a crucial encounter and became able to himself use mega evolution. From this day, he works for the person who gave him his keystone and mega stone (anyway, anyone who played to XY knows who I'm talking about).
I put 9 to the story because I was never bored. I watch it again and again and am never bored. Not "outstanding" because there's so much oras hype fanservice in act II and III but nevermind, it was still great.
The art is beautiful. Since DP pokemon became much better regarding art but nowadays it's really beautiful. But I put 8 because sometimes, Alan's face looks stupid and I don't like Furadari's face too. Don't say these reasons are stupid...
Nothing to say about the sound. I recognized most BGMs that are from the games, they're well chosen and the always nice sound of pokeani is one of the reason why I can't get bored of Mega Evolution (Alan's flashback in Act I with "the sun shines down" music is peace of art).
For the characters, 9... Dunno. I love Alan, he's adorable and all, but he's stupid. Please get out of that teenage rebellion already. What I still haven't talked about and is central in the story is Alan's companion, Manon. She's the only character in this story who's able to tell things as raw as they are, when she's happy, angry, or when she was trully scared. Truly said, without her around that idiot Alan would be dead meat now. If there were only those two I would put 10, put I'm a bit disappointed that Platane and Furadari didn't know each others like they did in the game. So -1 payback.
I already said enough how much I enjoyed these specials. For the overall, there are this I can criticize but it really deserves a 10 as it perfectly does what it has to do, introduce the Flare-dan intrigue. And many people say that Alan is the best thing that ever happened to Pokemon, I must complete by saying that Alan with Manon by his side is it. Those two are shining stars. I'm eager to see those two again in the main anime sequel !
Pokemon XY (the latest season of Pokemon) & Mega Evolution specials (ties directly into the XY&Z plot)
Notes: Pokemon's first season was pretty great back in the day, and then the series went down hill from there with it's copy-paste animations, mediocre voice acting and recycled plots. BUT! The old guard has been fired, and the new production company (Production I.G. YES the exact same people who did 'Attack on Titan') have gotten things back on track, and now I can proudly say: Pokemon isn't just good again, it's great! Now with actual character development, Sakuga quality animation, an overarching plot that makes you yearn for
the next episodes! There's still filler, but even those make Naruto envious now. It's not going to exceed the other series I named on the list, but it is without a doubt worth the time to watch now. If you want to watch Pokemon, I recommend you watch the first season, then hop on over to XY and the Mega Evolution specials.
Let me just throw this out there. I have seen every Pokemon season, movie, special and I've even read alot of the manga. And my opinion on each of them varies significantly, Ok? Now that we got that out of the way, let's begin the review.
To those who arent familiar with the subject matter, A Mega Evolution is a temporary stage of evolution past the original form of a Pokemon which significantly boosts the Pokemons power. And these transformations can only occur if the trainer and Pokemon carry a special stone. So judging by that title, you'd think this special is all about Mega Evolutions
and battles between such Pokemon. And you'd be right. But this special also includes something that ruins the experience. Pokemon XY: Mega Evolution (which will hereby be referred to as XYME) is a special that is actually more boring than it sounds.
The biggest problem with XYME is the two lead characters. First we have Alan, who has the single worst character design I've ever seen from any anime. His personality is very bland. Alans motivation boils down to simply "I want to be the strongest to protect people." Yeah, he basically wants to be a super hero. He's constantly super serious to the point where he just becomes boring to watch. Then we have Manon, a rookie trainer who follows Alan around, and is even more annoying than Alan. She serves no purpose to the plot. Her only reason for existing is to interfere with actually important conversations between the side characters. She does absolutely nothing, keeps getting in the way of important events, and her dialogue gets on my nerves. I hate Manon more than any other character in the Pokemon franchise. I cannot talk much about the side character as they were not explored enough in XYME. The story of this special just serves as a prologue for future events in the Pokemon XY main series, and its unremarkable for the most part.
The Pokemon battles in XYME is pretty decent, when its focusing less on the two leads. The animation is kinda jittery, and it constantly becomes fast and then slow during big battles. I thought my computer was lagging, but its just animated like that for some reason. But even with the strange animation, you do get a sense of epicness with some of the battles.
Side note - I watched the dub, and its absolutely awful to the point where its hilarious. While the side characters are mostly talking story stuff, the dialogue between Alan and Manon is laughably bad sometimes because of the dub. And other times its just annoying in general because of the characters themselves.
Overall - I would only recommend this to people who are currently watching Pokemon XY the main series so that they fully understand the continuity of events in that series. If you're a casual Pokemon fan and are looking for a cool short story for Pokemon then dont watch this. Watch Pokemon The Movie 2000 or Pokemon: The Origin instead. And if you never liked the Pokemon franchise in the first place then there is nothing here that can change your mind.
Considering how much I've enjoyed Pokemon XY the main series, XYME shouldve been just as enjoyable. Unfortunately, its pretty boring, and sometimes annoying.
