Fuji TV's noitaminA (ノイタミナ) late night programming block which currently broadcasts on Fridays from 00:45 to 1:45.

Every once in a while, a much-awaited sequel to a popular anime comes out and baffles the audience with unwelcome anime-original story changes coming as a result of diverging from the original author's style and vision.

Or, in a similar vein, the IP holder decides it's time to resurrect a story that was by all means finished (or close enough to it) with a completely unnecessary sequel or side-story that fails to live up to the original and makes the whole franchise worse just by existing. Even worse if it retcons the original to invalidate a major dramatic plot point just so that the sequel could happen.

In either case we're left with something that many fans will plead you to pretend it doesn't exist, and honestly... you should probably listen to them.

This list doesn't include manga/LN adaptations that started diverging from the original storyline already in their respective first (or only existing) seasons.

This list also doesn't include sequels that people actually asked for but they ended up horribly made (i.e. Berserk 2016, One-Punch Man S2).

It obviously doesn't include sequels that adapt bad source material without changing it (e.g. Food Wars S4 onwards); while a caring adaptation team will sometimes try to remedy the faults of the source, it's not expected of them to do so.

Fate and Gundam franchises aren't included simply because I just can't pick anything in particular from their enormous(-ly bloated) universes as an example of something unnecessary. You aren't losing anything by ignoring most of them.

This list constitutes my personal views and stances. If something isn't on it, it likely means I haven't seen it or don't have an informed opinion on the matter. Feel free to shoot me suggestions via DMs, but make sure you have a convincing argument if it's not something that's already on my main manga/anime list. Hands up, don't shoot! Here some of the best titles on a police theme I can think of. Most of them take place in the future and there are even police mechs in one of franchises!

Some powerfully executed mecha and sci-fi anime! If you're in for some action, drama, and some political, psychological, or philosophical subject matter, these are good anime recommendations. Please, give them a watch.

Animes that are either exclusive to Hulu or not on popular streaming services.

Sequels that had a considerably worse reception than the first/previous seasons.

The most common causes is continuing a story that fans considered completed or a bad/rushed adaptation.

Not including reboots/remakes/alternative versions.
Not including airing seasons nor seasons from less than 2 seasons old after airing.
Not adding sequels that had a score higher than its direct prequel, no matter if its score is lower than the first season, for example:

S1: 8.5 S2: 7.4 S3: 7.6
In this case I won't add the third season.
Not adding inter-season OVAs either but adding sequel specials meant as finale.

This is NOT based on my personal opinion although I might leave it here but it won't have any influence on the scale.
This list is MAL's score-based.
With "best" season I refer to the season with the highest score.
Difference must be more than 0.50 points unless next season of a previous one that was put here has a lower score of more than 0.1

Stay away!!! Reasons why they are bad or underwhelming: Bad animation, bad story, summary of previous seasons as whole episodes, bad endings, unrelated to source material, rushed plot or no continuation of previous plot. Every anime in this list suffers from at least one of the above problems.
