Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis

Thousands of years ago, the ancient dragon Bahamut wrought havoc upon the land of Mistarcia, a world where both gods and demons live amongst mankind. Working together to prevent the world's destruction, the rival deities barely managed to seal Bahamut, agreeing to split the key between them so that the dragon would remain eternally imprisoned.

With the world safe from the destruction of Bahamut, it is business as usual for bounty hunters like Favaro Leone. Living a laid-back, self-serving lifestyle, the amoral Favaro goes about his work while on the run from fellow bounty hunter Kaisar Lidfard, a righteous man who swears vengeance upon Favaro. However, Favaro's carefree life is thrown into chaos when he meets Amira, a mysterious woman who holds half of the key to the world's fragile peace.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis tells the story of a group of unlikely heroes who find themselves caught in the middle of an epic clash between gods and demons, forced to carve their own path in the face of the imminent storm.

The start of this show is without a doubt a 10/10, the characters, animation all of it. The whole vibe. Making me confused as to why it was only rated about a 7/10. However it seems like after that great start, they didn't really know where to go or what to do with much of the story. So the episodes in the middle feel a bit awkward, and a bit "meh" at times, they aren't nearly as fun and exciting. Towards the end in some ways it goes back up again, at least the excitement and the pace. But there are a lot of weird ... decisions and "plot holes" in the second half as well. That feel kind of unsatisfying. There's also a few short story episodes after this which I will now watch. Overall I'd probably rate the show an 8/10 But because I think it's underrated my official score on MAL will be a 9/10. Because especially those first few episode were really good. But if people want to argue the rest is not as good and that it also has a lot of issues, I won't disagree. I do of course wish as well that the whole show had been as good as the start. It would have been one of my favorite shows of all time it it had been able to maintain that quality and almost "Pirates of the Caribbean" vibe. I love Favaro, especially when he's at his best in the first half of the show, of course he has his moments later as well, but the overall quality and enjoyment of the show just goes down a bit. It's worth watching, but it's bitter sweet once you realize you're not enjoying it as much near the middle and the end as compared to the beginning, the setup and vibe were just practically perfect and Favaro had me smiling ear to ear for a lot of it. It just felt like they didn't think much or enough past that setup and vibe. It's like when you come up with a cool concept for a story, but only the start and the characters, but towards the middle and end. The world building and some plot lines fall apart a bit, and characters aside from your main characters end up being bland or outright stupid. Plot and character development does happen to them as well, but a lot of it doesn't make too much sense and feel unsatisfying or empty. This could have been a Masterpiece, and the start certainly is. It's absolutely worth the watch, but it's quite possible that if you're anything like me when it comes to how important the quality of a story and writing is to you, you might have mixed feelings by the end and feel nostalgic for the beginning of the show.

Mixed Feelings

The anime, much like its original video game, hasn't aged well and reflects the typical style of 2010s anime. Many discussions on forums show that people often view the series nostalgically, praising its animation and story. However, both aspects are actually quite mediocre. The animation, while acceptable, shows MAPPA's early work with several instances of poor CGI, awkward frames, and subpar drawings, mixed with some solid animation moments. Overall, it's a mixed bag.

The story feels like a hodgepodge of archangels, demons, and the tale of Jeanne d'Arc, seemingly cobbled together from a cursory read of their respective lore. The characters, such as the angels and ... demons, are shallow and nonsensical. For instance, Zeus being associated with archangels is puzzling, and many other gods aren't even mentioned. The demons are easily manipulated and mainly serve as flashy but ineffective figures.

The plot shines in the first half with standalone episodes that explore the world, giving a genuine anime feel rather than a generic video game isekai vibe. Sawashiro Miyuki's performance as Rita stands out, making her the best character in the series. However, the rest of the cast is less impressive. Favaro, initially annoying, becomes more tolerable but lacks the depth to be a main hero. Kaisar's character is frustratingly one-dimensional, with repetitive flashbacks and childish decision-making. Amira's character design and development are inconsistent, starting as a formidable demon girl but quickly being reduced to a naive child-like figure with inappropriate romantic and sexual undertones.

The villains are poorly developed, with motivations and actions that don't make sense. Jeanne's portrayal is particularly lacking compared to her depiction in the Fate franchise. The plot ultimately doesn't hold up, revealing unnecessary complexities around Amira's journey, with demons ironically hindering her from reaching Helheim.

Overall, this anime is a mediocre adaptation of a mediocre mobile game, which initially garnered attention but hasn't stood the test of time.

Shingeki no Bahamut is a series that I don't seem to love as much as others, which I will explain in detail while trying not to spoil too much.

First of all, the music and art is great, presenting the show in a spectacular package. Even the occasional CGI monsters works for the most part, sticking out yet without looking lazy.

I was drawn in by the idea of bounty-hunting and the refreshing design of our swashbuckling main character, Favaro, who brings in just the right balance of charm and goofiness. The conflicting relationships he shares with everyone around him is also an unending spring of entertainment. ...

The first episodes present an interesting concept. After bragging at a bar, Favaro unwittingly tricks a demon-girl and gets into a contract with her. Our suave rogue is now stuck with a demon far stronger than himself, who could easily destroy him with the flick of a finger if she realized he lied to her. It had great potential for some mind-games, with Favaro constantly having to lie and outsmart the demon in order to survive.

Sadly this is where the characters start to show how underdeveloped they are. The demon-girl turns out to be a naïve girl, easily outsmarted by everyone, turning into a plot-device and a damsel in distress. The promise of a great character-dynamic between her and Favaro goes straight out the window. My biggest pet-peeve however is that Favaro suffers from an old shounen-trait, which is that he’s too cool to care about anything. Is Favaro cool? Sure. Does having no clear motivation make him cooler? Not really. If anything it just makes him look like a third wheel when he's dragged into situations against his will. He even states out loud that he doesn't know exactly why he's doing what he's doing. He says he wants to rebel against destiny and forge his own path, yet his motto is “the wind blows to tomorrow”, symbolizing just how much he's guided by wherever the wind blows him. In a nut-shell this is what made the characters a let-down for me.

The story is a mish-mash of ideas that I’ve already seen done better. The great personification of evil that’s about to be awakened after a thousand years. The bickering trio from Samurai Champloo. The literal retelling of Jeanne d’Arc’s legend with the added twist at the end.

The story has several problems, but one is far bigger than the others. Our title-character Bahamut is not even remotely involved with the main characters until the last third of the series. The angels, demons and Jean d’Arc however are involved with Bahamut early on. I felt like the actual main characters were left to aimlessly wander while the main plot developed in the background.

Overall it is a well-animated series with an underdeveloped story that never delivers on what could have been something far greater.
