fantasy, spells, magical beasts and dragons! both have an epic feal to it , especially lodoss war, from the oldskool videogame!

Not as grim as Berserk but classic Sword and Sorcery none the less.

Both are fantasy war animes. Great, epic with interesting story but Arslan is more story telling and with not many fantasy creatures and characters.

Lloyd (Tales of Symphonia) and Parn (Record of Lodoss War) have similar personalities and aspirations. They are idealistic heroes with a strong sense of morality and act as the leader of their parties during their journey. Record of Lodoss War and Tales of Symphonia are heroic fantasy anime series that incorporate traditional RPG fantasy characteristics. In the anime fantasy landscape dominated by portal fantasy, both series will give you an opportunity to watch a more traditional fantasy anime.

Both are 90s fantasy anime with that simply RPGish feel in which a band of multi-race, multi-class, heroes must save the world.

SnM features outstanding production values and a beautiful score, while presenting a serious adventure story. The noble characters must band together, and swordplay and sorcery look great on screen.

Like ROLW, Escaflowne is a fantasy series with music by Yoko Kanno. However, Escaflowne has more interesting characters (imo), a better thought out setting and intriguing storyline.

Record of Lodoss War and Record of Grancrest War are heroic fantasy series, which means that the main characters are selfless, courageous and idealistic. Theo (Record of Grancrest War) and Parn (Record of Lodoss War) are humble individuals who assemble an unlikely group of characters to bring peace to their homelands. Both anime have a lot of potential despite their shortcomings in their plot development. Record of Grancrest War is especially enjoyable for its numerous pitched battles. Anyone who loves heroic fantasy will want to add this anime to their list.

Another high fantasy, bomb ass 90s OVA. Lots of monsters, magic, and sword play.

-lots of magic, fantasy adventure -world will reach its horrible ending if evil forces wont be stopped -supernatural creatures, D&D feeling -both animes are from past age Watch em if you like old but gold fantasy anime

both anime are adapted from what started out as rpg videogames ( dragonquest 1986) and lodoss war ( 1986) on the Famicon and PC-NEC engine system. both have a very familliar feel like the chara you meet at wich place, the items u get, the order of the bosses and the extra tranings u get to get more powerfull, pure rpg elements and oldskool fun

Ever felt like Lodoss is too much serious for a supposed Dungeons and Dragons anime? Rune Soldier is pretty much Lodoss with the true spirit of the tabletop game: with tons of humor and quirky sense of adventure

A band of very stereotypical adventurers including a priest, a dwarf and an elf set out on an adventure in a medievalesque land. They fight against fantasy monsters, especially goblins. The goblins looks more or less the same and have similar hierarchy structures in their race.

Both fantasy, both set in fictional worlds, in boths our heroes become main characters almost by accident, there is some serious world-building in both series. Protagonists must overcome great deal of danger. There is difference in art style, and Lodoss is closer to high fantasy genre, where Guin is closer to Conan-like (sword and sandals) fantasy.

Fantasy theme, good characters. The slice-of-life feel doesn't lend itself to an epic story, but the final battle will feel epic.

Action, magic, sorcery, spells, demons, dragons, gods, mythical beings and epic battles set in the Middle Ages are some of the things that theses two series have in common. These two action and adventure fantasy series are sure to delight fans of the fantasy genre.

Yuri Lowell (Tales of Vesperia) and Parn (Record of Lodoss War) are brave and idealistic fighters with aspirations to be knights. Record of Lodoss War and Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike covers the early experiences of these characters as they encounter their first challenges. Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike might be a prequel movie to a video game, but it is still enjoyable to anyone with no knowledge of the game. Its story structure and character growth is better realized than Record of Lodoss War, which is part of a classic multi-media franchise that addresses these weaknesses. In the early 1990s, Record of Lodoss War stood at the forefront of fantasy anime with its heroic fantasy narrative and RPG structure based on Dungeons & Dragons. Despite its popularity at the time, it did not establish a lasting trend in fantasy anime. Console RPGs instead started to look like anime. It is therefore no surprise when a Japanese RPG like Tales of the Abyss is adapted into an anime. It is essentially a heroic fantasy RPG and therefore shares many characteristics with Record of Lodoss War, except with a more complex storyline and different character archetypes. If this is the style of fantasy  read more

As a fantasy reader, I'm often frustrated with fantasy anime that seems only interested in displaying a facade to the genre. Where the entire storyline would be unaffected if the characters and setting took place in a traditional shounen anime. Claymore and Record of Lodoss War are genuine fantasy series that base their structure, narrative, characters, and themes from the heroic fantasy subgenre. They do not share the common characteristics of isekai anime and other similar fantasy anime. Record of Lodoss War might not the best fantasy anime, but it is a classic fantasy series deserving attention from fantasy fans. Claymore is arguably one of  read more

There has been a remarkable trend in fantasy anime adapted from light novels that has popularized a number of common characteristics. If you are tired of this trend then I recommend watching anime adapted from role playing games like Record of Lodoss War and Tales of Zestiria the Cross, which have more standard fantasy tropes. Both series are part of the heroic fantasy subgenre. Record of Lodoss War might feel dated and disjointed, but it has all the quality and charm expected from an old school anime. Tales of Zestiria the Cross has better story structure and high quality animation, but it did not standout  read more

Fantasy is a well established genre in anime, but Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy and Record of Lodoss War is best described as part of the sword and sorcery or heroic fantasy subgenres. Some may consider their storylines as stale or generic fantasy, but fans would consider them as classic fantasy stories representative of the early 1990s. Bastard‼ was also part of the wave of anime titles with extreme violence and sexual content from the 1980s and early 1990s, even though this is a new adaptation. If you consider yourself a fan then you'll enjoy this recommendation.

Both are 90's fantasy OVA's with the typical D&D party with characters such as: the human hero, the wise old man, and a she elf as they embark on a quest to stop a terrible evil.

Both Crest of the Stars and Record of Lodoss War contain love stories maintained alongside their overarching plots, and said love stories are handled in much the same way: ambiguously. Lafiel and Deedlit, the heroines of these stories also bear striking similarites in both appearance and personality. Parn and Jinto, the protagonists, also possess kindred pasts and (somewhat) similar dispositions. The art styles are also comparable, but that is likely a product of the decade in which they were both created. The main plot of these series' can be quite different at times, but they share similar themes and both tell wonderful stories.
