Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space

In the year 2010, practically one hundred percent of Cat Earth's GDP comes from the megacorporation Catty & Co., which is rapidly spreading across the rest of the galaxy. Here lives Tamala, a beautiful yet foul-mouthed cat, who decides to travel to the planet of her birth, Orion. After an unfortunate crash landing on the planet Q, Tamala meets Michaelangelo, a fellow cat, whom Tamala refers to as "MoiMoi."

As Tamala and Michaelangelo explore the planet's capital, Hate City—which is under martial law to separate the feuding cat and dog populations—they pass by graffiti and museum exhibits about the ancient cult of Minerva that speak of something dark and sinister. After Tamala catches the eye of the extremely violent motorcycle-riding Kentauros, she and Michaelangelo flee, but mysteries about Tamala's identity continue to surface. Why did Tamala originally leave Orion, and what exactly is her connection to Catty & Co.?

well i just finished the movie and i got to say i think its a masterpiece in its own weird way I'm a little sad it isn't mainstream because it truly is unique

Art: it is cute if you like Astro boy or hello kitty i think you would like this style because it is a blend of both. The movie is mostly in black in white but when they have colored scenes it really pops out and the colors go well together, considering this movie was made by 2 dudes i think it does a really great job!

sound: I love the music and voice ... actors, i think the voice fits the characters well
especially Tamala which may surprise you when watching the movie because she cusses a lot, it may catch you off guard because she sounds so cute but then she drops an F bomb, But i think it is endearing and makes this movie more unique.

Thoughts: I enjoyed the characters and wanted to know what would happen next and the mystery's going on around town about Tamala, the art is so so cute but even if the art is cute this movie goes into adult topics which i enjoy. When i saw the movie it didn't really make sense to me and was confusing, this movie is surreal but once i understood (looked it up) i realized the movie is kind of simple but I'm not going to spoil the movie because i want you to watch it.

overall: i love this movie to death but because this movie is surreal/doesn't make sense when you first watch it i would not recommend this to you if you aren't open minded

Mixed Feelings

First review.

Tamala 2010 is pretty much what I would call an experimental movie, likely auto produced. As such, the movie possesses strong points and weak points, which makes it hard to give it an overall mark.

Looking for qualifiers, I first thought of "cyberpunk", but the visual simplicity makes it barely adequate here (compare to Tetsuo), plus the usual cyberpunk questionning of existence also lacks. Tamala nevertheless has a punk attitude, and is akin to a somewhat dreamlike SF black and white Happy Tree Friends (without the gore).

That said, the mix is quite effective, and would probably have been awesome if not for ... the lacks in direction/writing, with a cool but thin plot, cool but underdevelopped characters and an overlong moment which could have been splitted or handled differently. But then again, these things are secondary to an experimental movie probably realized with a very small team (2D Flash animation could have been done by 3-4 people), and shouldn't be judged with the usual anime eye.

Fritz the Cat was my immediate comparison, but Tamala 2010 isn't as talkative, or as thought provoking. Its strong point is the art, and the clever use of contrasts and colours, which made me wish more than once wish I had experienced it in a movie theatre instead of my laptop. The OST is another very strong point: through drones and pads it succeeds in setting various moods that keep the viewer entertained.

Overall, the parodic/symbolic elements inherent to punk entertainment (compare to Sunabouzu, Tank Girl) had a certain fun value, as had the visuals. So a lot of unrealized potential, but as far as experimental anime goes, an interesting experience .

seen via english subtitles

Scif.i has a tendency of involving time warps and such but i never imagined a shows plot could be as equally warped! They take random things and throw it into the plot. Sometimes the cut to scenes of people talking but is unclear if theses are more random people or the same couple that keeps taking because they never focus on the characters. Instead the camera focuses on the legs, shows them in dark light, yadada.

Sound, was a joke. Using the same couple i mentioned the voices which are supposed to be of two individuals to me came ... from one. Also, from what could be seen of the hidden couple they were dressed as female so why a male voice?

I could go on and on but what would be the point. It won't provide me with answers just more questions.

As far as art is concerned this is mostly a black and white flick.

I recommend skipping this.
