Synopsis

Stubborn, spoiled, and naïve, 10-year-old Chihiro Ogino is less than pleased when she and her parents discover an abandoned amusement park on the way to their new house. Cautiously venturing inside, she realizes that there is more to this place than meets the eye, as strange things begin to happen once dusk falls. Ghostly apparitions and food that turns her parents into pigs are just the start—Chihiro has unwittingly crossed over into the spirit world. Now trapped, she must summon the courage to live and work amongst spirits, with the help of the enigmatic Haku and the cast of unique characters she meets along the way.

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi held the record of being the highest-grossing film in Japanese history from 2001 until 2020. As of December 2020, it has amassed a total of 31.68 billion yen from Japanese box office sales and a total of $395.8 million worldwide.

This critically acclaimed film has won numerous awards, including the Academy Award—more commonly known as the "Oscar"—for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003 as well as the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (alongside Bloody Sunday). It is also among the top 10 in the British Film Institute's list of the "50 films you should see by the age of 14."

The English version of Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi was dubbed by Walt Disney Pictures and premiered in 2002. The film was released on DVD and VHS formats in North America by Buena Vista Home Entertainment in 2003.

When I opened this door onto the world of Spirited Away, I was pretty impressed by a few things, first of, the thing you see at the first sight, the animation, are you really telling me this piece of art is 20 years, old, well I am impressed, this was so beautiful the characters are full of personality and the world is very bizarre in many ways, I wont spoil much but its really an interesting universe to get in, I just dont really like Chihiro at certain moments it kinda felt like she was a bit away from reality but I only felt like ...

Mixed Feelings

I didn't really like this film, I wasn't "transported" by the story and what was being told. I admit that there are some very good ideas, but they didn't interest me. The animation is very good, the general atmosphere is well exploited, which is remarkable (in all Miyazaki's films, apparently), and the music and sound design are good, but despite this I couldn't get hooked on Spirited Away and its magical world. That's just my opinion, because if you put aside my appreciation of the film, it objectively/honestly deserves a 9/10 or even a 10/10 for those who loved it, but I personally didn't enjoy ...

This is film is about a little girl who gets temporarily “transported” for a lack of a better word, into a supernatural, fantasy world. Which is supposed to be both fascinating and frightening, but fails to be either.

To be completely honest, this film was quite boring and way longer than it should have been, perhaps it was trying too hard. It does a really bad job at making you care about anything or anyone in it. If anything, the characters’ sentiments and reactions all feel disingenuous. This “alternate world” is nothing more than obnoxious exaggeration. The so-called “deep themes” are only thrown in and never ... actually explored, which is why this film appeals to children as well, anyone can claim its deep and intellectual if they use their imagination hard enough. For some adults it simply appeals to their inner child, and for other adults it allows them to pretend it’s intellectual and profound in some contrived way, saying the meanings are hidden is just the nice way of say they’re ambiguous and too open to interpretation. There is nothing mysterious, thought-provoking, scary or amusing about it. The colorful and overcrowded nature of it is just a superficial distraction from how uninteresting and shallow it really is.

For a supposedly character-driven plot, the characters are completely shallow, bland and have nothing to offer. Most, especially the main ones, failed to leave any impression on me whatsoever. Their personalities basically don’t exist, we know nothing about them from beginning to end. Its clear that Chihiro was only ever meant to be a self-insert for child viewers. Whatever symbolism this anime had, it didn’t matter, because symbolism usually links back to the characters directly or indirectly. However, the characters are nothing but cardboard cutouts who didn't have a single noteworthy characteristic, so it would have never worked.

The “true love” thing they tried to pull at the end with Chihiro and Haku was honestly laughable. Even though the film is longer than the average anime film, it didn’t feel like these two had learned anything about each other (it doesn't help that they hardly spent time around each other). So, their “strong bond”, platonic or otherwise is very unconvincing. We are told they knew each other a long time ago, which I’m obviously supposed to be content with. Yet we don’t get more than two sentences at the end about that excuse of a backstory.

I don’t have anything against anime that doesn’t have a clear storyline or chain of events leading to a specific goal. However this film was truly meaningless, it had nothing to it. No substance whatsoever. This was a forgettable snooze fest.
