Synopsis

In the distant future, a majority of humans have left the Earth, and the Galactic Alliance of Humanity is founded to guide exploration and ensure the prosperity of mankind. However, a significant threat arises in the form of strange creatures called Hideauze, resulting in an interstellar war to prevent humanity's extinction. Armed with Chamber, an autonomous robot, 16-year-old lieutenant Ledo of the Galactic Alliance joins the battle against the monsters. In an unfortunate turn of events, Ledo loses control during the battle and is cast out to the far reaches of space, crash-landing on a waterlogged Earth.

On the blue planet, Gargantia—a large fleet of scavenger ships—comes across Chamber and retrieves it from the ocean, thinking they have salvaged something of value. Mistaking their actions for hostility, Ledo sneaks aboard and takes a young messenger girl named Amy hostage, only to realize that the residents of Gargantia are not as dangerous as he had believed. Faced with uncertainty, and unable to communicate with his comrades in space, Ledo attempts to get his bearings and acclimate to a new lifestyle. But his peaceful days are about to be short-lived, as there is more to this ocean-covered planet than meets the eye.

You have to respect the ambition of this story. It begins as a grand space epic and ends with a young man changing how he sees humanity. The core narrative arc makes sense and it's tied to a powerful metaphor about beauty being an alternative to war.
The whole thing is glued together by some inventive world building and decent visuals but it's the mid part of the story that drags it down into mediocrity.

After a fascinating start with a thrilling sci fi premise Gargantia settles in to some much more chill, slice of life episodes. This would be fine if we were ...

Mixed Feelings
If it were possible to watch episodes 1-3ish, then episodes 9-finale, it would be a 7 or an 8. Some of Urobuchi's best work thematically. The problem is that he bailed out of the middle portions of the series, making it a real uneven mess that takes a turn away from the actual interesting part of the story to do some kinda vapid fanservicey stuff. Unfortunately you can't really skip over it because there needs to be character development to move the hero from the great opening to the great ending.

Still worth a watch, just barrel through the middle.

What is worse, a show that aims high and fail or a show that doesn’t and succeed. Personally, I think the latter is more acceptable. I feel this way since a show doesn’t aim high doesn’t give me false expectations. Shows that do aim high, but fail to deliver just leave me angry and frustrated, such in the case with Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.

The first episode set up something that could've been genuinely interesting. It yet another fish of water story, this time it’s in the distant future with a mecha pilot from the Galactic Alliance named Ledo, gets stranded on a floating ...
