Synopsis

Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called Titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal Titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Eren, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and his childhood friend Armin Arlert join the brutal war against the Titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.

I will not be fully objective, since I am particularly fond of this anime, but I think that we can't deny the fact that it's one of the best and most impactful works of the last decade. Like other great works, I am convinced that (and I already know) AOT will be a source of inspiration for the future ones. I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the ending, but that’s another matter. ENG/ESP Review on Shingeki no Kyojin
This review contains minor spoilers.

ENGLISH:

It is clear that I have come very late to the hype-train of Shingeki no Kyojin, years later in fact; I don't know why but this show never quite caught my attention and I only started to get interested when the show had already blown up the anime and manga community in every possible way and I can see why; Shingeki no Kyojin is quite fun to watch, as I have finished it in just 3 days and not only this, it also has an animation that surely revolutionized 2014 in a similar way to Kimetsu ... no Yaiba in more-modern days. Watching the episodes of the anime and feeling full with an atmosphere of grandiosity and mostly-frenetic action scenes, with a tone that at the time was perhaps more innovative and which scratched the vein of more grotesque or dark atmosphere that was beginning to grow in anime fans. It's an exciting show to watch, but of course it's an anime that despite executing certain elements well, Shingeki no Kyojin does other things..., not so well, I'd say.

The first thing you notice when you start watching Shingeki no Kyojin is its simple and bland cast of characters, with Eren Jaeger, who possesses an identity characteristic of shonen protagonists; short fused, short-tempered and always in a hurry, who tends to shout most things out loud and is not very smart in the way he goes about things. Mikasa Ackermann, who is surely the worst character in the entire anime by far and consists purely of a tremendously bland Mary Sue composed of only one trait; protecting Eren at all costs, her identity is Eren and everything about her is Eren, to the point where she seems more like an ornament of the protagonist than a separate character; not only this, Mikasa actively damages the series due to her being so strong in combat that she makes the others look like complete useless dweebs next to her (with the exception of Levi). Armin is the classic fragile guy incapable of fighting and in charge of logistics, perhaps the best and most realistic character all in all, he's a decent interpretation of the wimpy character archetype; the other characters are completely one-dimensional (Annie being blonde Mikasa and Sasha, whose entire identity is based on two comedic gags) and their personality consists of a single trait repeated throughout the series, and I'm confident that this anime would be much better without Mikasa.

In a series like Shingeki no Kyojin something important is the mystery and emotion; but the climax of the series is an absolutely silly and obvious revelation that rather than surprise me the only thing it did was to make me think "Seriously?? Was it the most obvious thing all-along??" since my brain had automatically dismissed it due to it being clearer than water, it's a mystery solved in a very anticlimactic, goofy way and the ending of this anime (and climax of the series) is one of the worst I've ever seen, with a character doing something out of what his identity means and a weird representation of rage; imagine that someone kills compatriots and even your own family-members, completely destroys and pulverizes them in front of your own eyes without you being able to do anything, you have the opportunity to kill this individual but they just start to cry before you give them the final hit, do I have too much cynicism to think that something like that would not stop such a strong emotion as a completely unleashed rage? And more so when they are surely crocodile tears and sadness at being captured, not true regret. That scene felt more like something out of character and an asspull or plot armor to keep the series going, plus cheap emotion that reminds me of the flashbacks Kimetsu no Yaiba suddenly shoves in to make you "empathize" with the demons, it is a very disappointing and cheap ending.

A positive point of Shingeki no Kyojin is, as I said before, its tone of epic grandeur and dynamic action scenes that in its time were surely top-tier and that even today look good. The anime manages to capture the viewer's interest through its worldbuilding and manages to make the audience question various mysteries presented by the show; from the origin of the titans to the exterior beyond the walls, the first season definitely feels like an appetizer before the heavyweights that are the rest of the seasons. Like ingredients for a recipe, I can see why Shingeki blew up the community so much; for in 2014 it was the equivalent of Demon Slayer in pure action frenzy and dark setting, watching Levi spin through the air with the two blades should have been the equivalent of watching the sun dance in Kimetsu no Yaiba, an act of pure style and for their times they are impressive audio-visually and have aged like wine; but as it stands, it is a show that I can't rate very high due to its weak cast of characters and its utterly-ridiculous final mystery, with a disappointing climax for a series of this style.

Está claro que he llegado muy tarde al hype-train de Shingeki no Kyojin, años más tarde de hecho; no sé por qué pero este show nunca me llamó del todo la atención y recién empecé a interesarme cuando ya el show había reventado a la comunidad de anime y manga de todas las formas posibles y puedo ver el por qué; Shingeki no Kyojin es bastante divertido de ver, llegando a terminarlo en tan solo 3 días y no solo esto, además tiene una animación que seguramente revolucionó 2014 de una forma similar a Kimetsu no Yaiba. Es ver los capítulos del anime y terminar lleno de un tono de grandiosidad y escenas de acción en su mayoría frenéticas, con un tono que en su tiempo quizá era más innovador y que rascaba la vena de ambientación más grotesca u oscura que empezaba a crecer en los fans de anime. Es un show emocionante de ver pero por supuesto que no es un anime que a pesar de hacer ciertas cosas bien hace otras.., no tan bien, diría yo.

Lo primero que nota uno al empezar a ver Shingeki no Kyojin es su cast de personajes simple y blando, con Eren Jaeger, el cual posee una identidad característica de los protagonistas shonen; de fusibles cortos, irascible y apurado, que suele decir la mayoría de cosas a gritos y que no es muy inteligente en su forma de hacer las cosas. Mikasa Ackermann, la cual es seguramente el peor personaje de todo el anime por lejos y que consiste puramente de una Mary Sue tremendamente blanda compuesta por solo un rasgo; proteger a Eren a toda costa, su identidad es Eren y todo sobre ella es Eren, hasta el punto de que parece más un adorno del protagonista que un personaje aparte; no solo esto, Mikasa daña activamente la serie debido a que es tan fuerte en combate que hace que los demás parezcan completos bobos inútiles al lado de ella (a excepción de Levi). Armin es el clásico chico frágil incapaz de luchar y que se encarga de la logística, quizá el mejor personaje y el más realista dentro de todo, es una interpretación decente del arquetipo pusilánime; los demás personajes son unidimensionales (Annie siendo Mikasa rubia y Sasha, la cual toda su identidad se basa en dos gags comédicos) y su personalidad consiste de un solo rasgo repetido a lo largo de toda la serie, y tengo toda la confianza de que este anime sería mucho mejor sin Mikasa.

En una serie como lo es Shingeki no Kyojin algo importante es el misterio y la emoción; pero el climax de la serie es una revelación absolutamente tonta y obvia que más que sorprenderme lo único que hizo fue hacer que me quede como "¿¿En serio era esa opción tan obvia??" ya que mi cerebro la había descartado automáticamente por ser más clara que el agua, es un misterio resuelto de forma muy anticlimática, boba y el final de este anime (y climax de la serie) es uno de los peores que he visto, con un personaje que hace algo fuera de lo que significa su identidad y una representación extraña de la furia; imagínate que alguien mata a compatriotas y familiares tuyos, los destroza y pulveriza en frente de tus propios ojos sin que puedas hacer nada,tienes la oportunidad de matar a este individuo pero justo empieza a llorar, ¿tengo mucho cinismo como para pensar que algo así no detendría a una emoción tan fuerte como es una furia completamente desencadenada? Y más cuando seguramente sean lágrimas de cocodrilo y tristeza por haber sido capturado, no por arrepentimiento verdadero. Esa escena se sintió más como algo fuera de personaje y un asspull o plot armor para que la serie pueda seguir, además de emoción barata que me recuerda a los flashbacks que Kimetsu no Yaiba mete de repente para hacer que "empatices" con los demonios, es un final muy decepcionante y barato.

Un punto positivo de Shingeki no Kyojin es, como dije antes, su tono de épica grandiosidad y escenas de acción dinámicas que en su tiempo seguramente eran top-tier y que incluso a día de hoy se ven bien. El anime logra captar el interés del espectador a través de su worldbuilding y logra hacer que la audiencia cuestione varias incógnitas que presenta el show; desde el orígen de los titanes hasta el exterior más allá de las murallas, la primera temporada definitivamente se siente como un aperitivo antes de los pesos pesados que son el resto de temporadas. Como si fueran ingredientes para una receta, puedo ver por qué Shingeki explotó tanto a la comunidad; pues en 2014 fue el equivalente a Demon Slayer en frenética acción pura y ambientación oscura, ver a Levi girar por los aires con las dos cuchillas debía ser el equivalente de ver la danza del sol en Kimetsu no Yaiba, un acto de puro estilo y que para sus tiempos son impresionantes audiovisualmente y que han envejecido como el vino; más un show que no puedo puntuar muy alto debido a su débil cast de personajes y su misterio final completamente ridículo, con un climax decepcionante para una serie de este estilo.

this anime is fascist. it tries using allegories to depict it and at some point, attemps to make anti-fascists and anti-militarism remarks in it's story. fails miserably. the only thing this anime succesfully achieves by the end is depicting a genocide.

if you still want to watch this hot piece of garbage, you'll probably stay due to the art style and action scenes being fun to watch. if you leave your political side behind, this is actually a fun experience. nothing magical, something that will change your life forever, but a little fun thing to watch before you go to sleep or anything like that.
