Synopsis

Suzu Urano is a pure and kindhearted girl who loves to draw and keep her head in the clouds. Growing up in the outskirts of Hiroshima with her family, she is more than happy to help with her grandmother's nori business.

However, when she becomes of age, Suzu leaves her beloved home to marry Shuusaku Houjou, a man she barely knows. As she integrates into her new husband's household, the homesick bride struggles to adjust to the unfamiliar environment as the war effort extends far beyond its point of no return. When the war reaches Suzu's own backyard and peace gives way to brutality, how will she support herself and those she comes to love along the way?

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni paints a colorful yet haunting depiction of everyday life in the years before and after World War II, showcasing the perseverance and fortitude of ordinary Japanese during one of the darkest periods of modern history.

I think what describes "In this corner of the world" best is: being in the eye of the storm. It is somewhat calm and relaxing, has many slice of life moments and the main protagonist Suzu tries to be happy and joyful despite her situation, but there is the anticipation of the worst, yet to come. There are many undertones in this movies and things unspoken, things that are only slightly hinted at, things that later forgotten, because it would be too cruel to be reminded of them, to be reminded what has been lost and what could have been. The movie reaches deep into ... the dark abyss containing the horrors of war, at least if you catch up to its drift, while still having heart felt moments giving a tiny glimpse of hope and joy. I think it’s the best anti-war movie I have watched in a long time.

As I eluded before, we follow Suzu a young girl from Hiroshima (speaking of anticipation) who is being married off to a family of a nearby town and has to get used to her new surroundings. She seems to always has her head in the clouds and keeps her thoughts to herself. She is not good at what she is expected to do, that is do the household, but she likes to draw. She always seems joyful and happy, or at least she tries to be. I really like Suzu, you can tell that she doesn’t tell you everything she thinks and wants and the more suffering she has to endure the more you can peek behind the facades , she just feels so genuine and real, while at the same time unique and interesting.

All the other characters, while maybe not being as deeply developed as Suzu, still feel refreshing and real. Most of them are not stereotypes as you often see in war dramas. They feel like real people with their own struggles, motivations, regrets and growth, while at the same time also not being totally open to read.

Another point I think it sets it apart from other war movies is its unpredictability. While in other war dramas you usually know what you will get, how the story progression will likely be and so forth, however in “In this corner of the world” many things happen so suddenly without foreshadowing. It is reminiscent of the abruptness of war.

The art style and sound track, as well as voice acting are phenomenal in my opinion, both in the Japanese and English dub. The art style is simplistic and somewhat childish and it gives the movie a unique charm, while having many artistically beautiful and interesting moments, such as depicting plane gun shots as blobs of paint from a brush, as seen through Suzus eyes as an artist.

Overall this movie is full of heart-warming scenes that may make you giggle, but also depressing scenes that make you feel empty inside. It’s a roller-coaster of emotions and you have to hold on tight, otherwise you will be thrown off and realise that all has been for none. As the character in this story must realize, that all their suffering has been for none, even if Japan would have won. Such is the nature of war. Because only a fool would think that losing your loved ones could be justified with anything.

Mixed Feelings

I went into this excited about watching a historical work, all the character nuances and settings really piqued my interest. The animation was stunning and art direction fitted in really nicely; but the scripting was just completely off. Some nice touches included joining in the Hiroshima explosions to give depth to how powerful the A-Bombs were in diameter.
But characters motivations were all over the place, things were explained but never shown or whole characters just sorta disappeared from the movie halfway through never to be heard from again. A particularly heart wrenching decision was the mother who lost her daughter to bombing, only to ...

I watched the animated movie Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, also known as In this Corner of the World. Here are my thoughts:

The story takes place in the 1940s of WW2-era Japan. It is mainly told through the eyes of civilians.

Even though it was released in 2016, the movie feels very old. Everything about it: the art style, the music, the voice acting, the story; they are all reminiscent of early anime productions from the late 20th century. I personally am not a huge fan of anime from this era (speaking VERY generally), so I might be unfairly biased towards this movie. Furthermore, I usually ... shy away from WW2-era fiction because of how I've seen it done ad nauseam in western media. So I might be biased in this respect as well, although the perspective of a Japanese citizen is relatively less common in western works.

Characterization is one weak aspect of this movie. Despite the 2-hour runtime, characters are not adequately fleshed out or even properly introduced at all. Random characters are just thrown into plot-relevant scenes as if the audience is expected to know who they are. This issue is exacerbated by the blob-like same-face character designs and dull earthy colour palette, which makes individual characters not particularly distinct from one another.

Although I didn't like the character designs, the background art is often quite nice. It has an organic look to it in that it often appears hand-drawn/painted. I frequently paused the movie to admire the landscape frames.

The main focus is on female characters and it felt as though gender roles were a consideration in the writing. The lives of Japanese women during this time period are explored in various ways. A lot of screentime is spent on the various domestic duties performed by women (mainly the MC). I enjoyed this aspect of the movie, but this enjoyment was derived from cultural interest rather than the usual mechanisms through which one appreciates fiction, like emotional engagement.

Good audio production quality. However, I did not like the voice acting. The characters mumble constantly and it is difficult to discern the words. Additionally, there is often very little emotion in the voices. Maybe this was a deliberate artistic choice but in any case I did not like it.

This movie has major direction problems. It tries to be sentimental and emotional but instead watching it feels like I took too much cough syrup. I often felt confused by what was happening, particularly during the first half of the movie. Basic plot components are never explicitly explained. It seems like the movie wants to be 'show don't tell' but it does this very poorly. Even before events take place, foreshadowing could have been handled better. Additionally, the characters' behaviour never seems to match the situation. The whole series feels absurdly tone-deaf; if this is an intentional artistic choice then it is a poor one.

Despite my distaste for the WW2 context, the movie does provide a rich view of the daily life of Japanese citizens during this time. From a sociological perspective it is interesting. The movie is clearly meant to be some sort of social commentary, and the characters and plot are just tools with which to accomplish this task. It does a good job of presenting a historical cultural snapshot, but perhaps at the cost of sacrificing any actual emotional engagement with the characters themselves. Throughout the movie I did not feel anything for the characters despite the tremendous hardship that inevitably comes with the Japanese WW2 setting. Emotionally, it felt like I was watching a documentary. Even though the subject matter is tragic, it was still viewed with detached emotionless intellectual interest.

In my judgement, the only reason to watch this movie is if you are interested in Japanese culture and history. I satisfy that criteria and for that reason I watched the entire thing.

Overall rating: 3/10
I am shocked by the praise that this movie has received.

For the record, nothing I've written here is intended to trivialize the events of WW2; I am simply stating my personal evaluation of a work of fiction.

Footnote: I watched the original length movie, not the extended version. Maybe the extended version would have been more coherent. Also, apparently there was a live-action adaptation (unseen by me) of this released a few years before the animated version.
