Synopsis

Rokurou "Rock" Okajima has joined the Lagoon Company, a pirate mercenary group which operates out of Roanapur, Thailand. Despite his initial protests, this filthy slum of depraved souls and merciless criminals now serves as the former salaryman's home. Stranded, with nothing left of his past life but the clothes on his back and his inner morality, Rock is forced to perform jobs alongside the other members of the Lagoon crew. Berated for his lack of spine as he wades through the underbelly of society, he must decide whether to continue on amidst the gunfire and ruthlessness or risk everything he has in an attempt to be free. Whether he chooses the comfort of a familiar land or the freedom of being an outlaw, his decision will have lasting consequences on the crew who gave him a home.

This is a review of both seasons.

Who would have imagined that a show about philosophy would turn into a stereotypical crime drama? Murder, guns, and mafia battles. To be honest, it was a little unsettling to watch a shoot-em-up action movie confront both itself and the audience. The show disregards morality, but unlike most shows, it does it directly in our faces rather than using the tactic of "Oh, it's just the enemy." Black Lagoon isn't something that strives to make an impact on the viewer, it's an action, international themed story about mafia and strange villains that are too strong to exist, and that's okay.

The story tried new things, exploring the disturbing moral dilemmas of the twins, the fun aspects of the dollar girl, and questioning the goals of the protagonist in the last arc. I enjoyed each arc in varying degrees, but not everything works. Mostly, this feels much more wacky, much more contrived and stupid for its own good. Where to begin. Black Lagoon may in fact be the worst animation ever, and it boggled the mind that someone felt a second season was necessary. Just as well, I feel it is my duty to the MAL community to help cease the spread of misinformation that seems to be plaguing the internet about this "series" (and i use the term loosely I assure you)
